Hello!
I will just jump right into it!

1.) so when you make a group, it should be something not too specific,(ex. purplemonkeylovers idk lol) but something people can relate to. (ex. monkeylovers)
2.) It will take time so be patient!
3.) Holding contests really helps attract people! (People like prizes)
4.) Having co-founders and contributers in your group could also help gain popularity.
5.) Lastly if you're a super group, that is great. Obviously it costs money/points, so thats the down side. I am not a super group, but I am sure it would help.

I made a group previous to this one that wasn't popular in the slightest. It was because the name and genre of the group was too specific and long. It was something like Xxchibi-pokemonxX.. i think... so as you can tell, that name is too long and.. just weird.
Also affiliating with other groups can help... Make a journal about your group too.
Honestly, in my opinion, it takes time. My group started out quite small (like most groups) and me, and some friends were the only people submitting until I made contests and time passed.
So, yeah... I hoped I helped! Groups are a commitment, remember that! You have to be quite active on dA to run one... My group isn't as active as it once was..
