yeah it was a fun time to sit in the sun, in the middle of nowhere in Tunisia, colouring ant eyes, while the locals where shaking their heads when the talk comes to the crazy German researchers. Like, ants are all around in my kitchen, so why should I go to the 40°C desert? You even get a sunburn through your clothes because of the intense radiation o0 And you know the sweat and sun creme won't leave your clothes for the next 6 weeks and start building a soft but smelly cover...
I am much more happy to be back home, although this was pretty adventurous!

JackShelbourn In reply to Gironimo [2011-09-01 22:02:52 +0000 UTC]
That sounds AMAZING! Would love to do something like that!... Well Maybe not with the Ants
That sounds cool that the locals where nice but also laughed at you haha. And thats crazy about the sun burn! Did you get burnt a lot or did you survive ok?
You have opened up way too many questions for me to ask haha so i won't overload! but did you go as part of your studies or job?

Gironimo In reply to JackShelbourn [2011-09-02 08:30:13 +0000 UTC]
well at first it sounded more fun, but when you have the same routine day after day you slowly realize that getting the data is hard work.
Against the sun, all that helped was wearing long and thin clothes, a hat, and using sun creme with a protection up to 50. these ones are so sticky, they don't even go into your skin. The creme just stays on the surface, mixes with sand and sweat for the next 9 hours
uh well I did my Bachelor of Science with the desert ants, and I finished it just two months ago. People in the departement of biology always work with these animals, and they go to Tunisia each year to do their research and analyze their data the following months. Yeah and they needed just someone to help. It was a big pro that I already knew how to touch the ants without hurting them They payed the flight and the apartement where we lived, so it was a little like a job.
Biology always sounds a little weird to others, so let me ask, what are you doing?
Oh, by the way, I can suggest you the book "Adventures among ants" by Mark Moffett, he captures the fascination of ants perfectly and you understand everything without needing to know much about biology itself

JackShelbourn In reply to Gironimo [2011-09-02 23:51:52 +0000 UTC]
Mmmm sticky sun tan lotion and sweat! Makes me want to jump on a plain right away! haha
Seriously sounds like a great adventure though.
Cool you got the opportunity!
So you studied your degree on those Ants? Are they a really specific type? I guess I'll need to read the book...
I'm a fan of science and Biology but my love is physics. I read books on it etc and keep and eye on it, although I have lost track in the last few months. But my problem is I can't do the maths. So I take that for granted, but I wish I could join in
So don't worry you can throw science stuff my way.
Me? I moved to London a few months ago and I'm making my way into the Film industry. I'm a Cinematographer primarily but also an editor and visual effects artist. I work on commercial projects to earn money as all the film stuff I am doing is expenses only. But I have worked on 2 films and I've only been here 3 months so thats good. Just getting them completed so they can be sent to festivals.
Then its all about getting paid work
What is it you do full time? Or are you fresh from Uni?
Also I'm amazed you do all this and still kick ass at drawing! Not fair haha!

Gironimo In reply to JackShelbourn [2011-09-04 18:26:21 +0000 UTC]
My own research for my Bachelor thesis was on Cataglyphis fortis, the same kind of ants I worked with in Tunisia. They are much bigger than the ants in middle Europe, but much faster and more beautiful
Oh the maths isn't easy for me, too! I had my problems with it, and much more with physics I don't know who decided that each Biologist should take these courses to get the Bachelor. I'm just happy I got them done and can now totally start working with what I like!
Wow, you're in the Film industry? That sound so exciting to me! I guess you can be really creative and make your weirdest ideas come to life, and even get payed for it! But, as you said, of course you need the serious stuff to buy your food and stuff. I've just been once to London. Well at least I've been at the Heathrow airport, but got totally lost there while the bus drivers went on strike, I missed my bag, and needed 2 hours to find the right terminal... I hope London itself will be more friendly to me one day
Right now I start a holiday semester to do some lab work in the pharmaceutical industry. I badly need some practical work to find the motivation for studying. It seems to be all about learning dozens of sheets of papers, wit no importance or reference to 'real biologist life', and all you get is a kick in the ass because your mark are bad. Well the next few months I'll at least earn my own money In spring I'll continue with the Master's programme, which is only 2 years.
aw well recently I don't got much time for drawing but I promised myself to never stop. There are lots of artists around DA who are so excellent because they simply have mor time for practicing while I feel like I mark time.
greetings from Germany

Hey, sorry it's taken me a while to reply. Been a bit busy and didn't want to do a crappy rush reply
Anyway... Your research sounds crazy cool! I've never put much thought into ant's other than how much the Aliens from the film 'Alien' act like them haha!
I guess it's good you got to do a bit of everything, but I can understand how doing something Like maths, that you don't directly work with can be annoying! I had to do it for a module and it drove me made. had to do a physics one, but not fun physics. it was all about making a small amp. BORING! haha
So what are you starting to do? What do you want to do? Are you going to be doing research? Sticking with insects?
see... A whole new world of questions haha!
Yep the film industry is where I'm at And yeah it can be really exciting. I went off to Pinewood Studios yesterday. Didn't get to see much, but it was great being there for the first time. I went to watch a conference on 3D technology and digital cinema cameras. Was a massive geek fest. I came away with a brain like jelly because of all the information I got thrown at me :S
I have done some really creative stuff, but for now I don't have the budget to let my imagination out of my head haha.
I can promise you that London is at least 10% better than Heathrow... haha i joke. It's great I love it. Not to everyone's tastes. but so far it's been great.
So are you researching Drugs or doing experiments with them etc? I think I already asked that. Forgive me :S
I know what you mean. Although it's good, just reading things is never as good as doing! practical is best!
Well I have seen plenty of people who draw everyday but haven't created stuff as good as some of your work.
You should set yourself some time each night to draw! And draw things you have never drawn before
Greetings from rainy and... Well dull at the moment, although a blimp just flew past my window and that was fun... England

no problem, I am pretty busy, too it's sad to not have as much time for drawing as I want to at the moment...
Well I work for 6 months in the pharmeceutical industry and do microbiological control of the produced injections. Recently I held a drug for breast cancer in my hand, this was such a strange feeling! You know, they should be aseptic, and working very clean is what I'm learning right now. No sneezing, not touching anything and being very concentrated. I just started 2 weeks ago and so far I like it, although the company is in another town and I have to spend up to 4 hours a day in the train getting there. You see, it's very different from simple learning at university, but I can feel I'm not ready to start working for the rest of my life...
When I'll return to university in April I'll continue working with insects I guess because the people in the neurobiological departement are more than friendly to me and working there for my Bachelor thesis was a great and productive thing. Later I'll better go back to the pharmaceutical industry because you might imagine there aren't much people giving you money for researching insects than researching cancer
Indeed, there seem to be lots of people doing nothing all day but having freetime for drawing (I won't say any name ). I'm a little jealous, but on the other hand producing a mass of art might give you attention on DeviantArt and some watchers but won't improve your social life out there. The way they write their comments tells me they're waiting all day for the attention. You know what I mean? That's why last spring I decided to step a little back because this whole DA thing became too much for me. All of this drama really annoys me. Well I'm still active, but prefer uploading art than just spend time here.
Oh don't worry, I promised myself to never stop drawing and for this I got a constant reminder on my body now I am happy you like my stuff, but maybe you know this feeling that you're often too exhausted after a long day of work to be creative...
so this again was a long answer
A blimp flew past you window? o0 that's crazy! I'm in the black forest right now and all I can see is rain and trees out there...
:waves:

Hey, sorry it again has taken me ages to reply. Had a crazy busy few weeks. Lots of filming and editing. All commercial and corporate work. But still fun
Done much drawing?
Wow holding that drug must have been crazy! That's really cool though. I would have liked the idea of working in a lab. You know, as a team, creating things and experimenting!
What happens if you really really really REALLY! need to sneeze? Do you have to get out of the room ASAP?
However insects could be the key to cancer...? I don't know. But both sound really interesting
Haha yeah sitting inside and creating art is no good for your social life... I should know haha! My works a kind of art and i'm sat inside (most of the time at my flat) working. I see no one :S I sometimes go out for a walk just to be near people. Never mind. Once I am settled down here and the bills are taken care of I'll start being social haha
Yeah i know about being exhausted to work! but sometimes when i have days when i want to be creative i just still looking at my screen with 0 inspiration :S
But then sometimes like yesterday i was just sat at the table day dreaming and then suddenly started noticing things around me. Started seeing them as if through a camera and managed to write and entire intro to a film! just how it works I guess!
How was the black forest? This time instead of a blimp flying past I think a car chase just went past! All i know was that there was a lot of police sirens and loud cars :S
