I love your work, I'd like to ask you about your backgrounds? Do you use any specific technique or brushes? They really bring the paintings to life.

Thank you! I've replied to a very similar question below this one - Hopefully that might answer some of your questions? With regards to background technique, My backgrounds always start as a simple gradient of colours which I want to incorporate. As I paint the face, I gradually add colours into the background which compliment the tones found in the skin/lighting of the subject. Hope that helps some - It's very difficult to explain my process without the use of WIP's or a time-lapse video; I keep getting asked about my processes, so in the future i'll probably upload a tutorial with pictures to help explain it better.

Could you tell me what brushes you use? Especially for the Sherlock paintings' backgrounds?

Hi there, thank you very much! I have about 300 different brushes and I couldn't possibly tell you which particular brushes I used for each image because I don't keep track myself - I use a LOT for my backgrounds. It's mainly trial and error and I usually put each different brush on a separate layer so I can edit it without disturbing the rest of the background. I'd suggest searching around for some brushes and downloading them, then trying them out on Photoshop to see which you like/don't like and which you think might come in handy. That's what i've been doing since I started working digitally and eventually you build up a repertoire that suits you! If I come across any links to brushes i've used, i'll note them to you, though.
