Because I publish fan fiction; the fair use doctrine is a fairly complicated piece of law, but it basically boils down to this: fan art may be created and published so long as the creator and publisher do not charge money for doing so.

Nothing much: you get your work seen by hundreds of people, and you get to say that you are a published writer.

I work for fun, I don't get any money out of this. Which means I don't have any money to pay to writers like you. But there are benefits: if you self-publish then this is a great way to get some publicity, and if you want to publish your work professionally, being able to say that you are a published writer can help.
