No luck At this rate, I probably won't have time to upload anything for the next few months as well.

You got great pictures despite bad photography weather! You got some great shots of the Koolhaas library. I love buildings with windows everywhere... despite it being hard to block out gloomy days, it'd be really cool in thunderstorms. I also like the one of the bear in the berry bushes.

And YAY You caught the aurora!

What kind of settings did you use to shoot the rainbow?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

geolio In reply to reicirith [2008-09-06 02:41:50 +0000 UTC]

Manual settings, I need faster lens (i.e f1.8).

I took them at 17mm , f2.8 , long shutter speed (it was like 60+ seconds) The longer the exposure the more rainbow it looks and less like waves. The lights actually dance and they move really rapidly.

.....

Then after reading it more carefully, I realize you mean the rainbow rainbow in Denali. I had a polarizer on. It minimized glare and also darkens the upper 1/2 of your shot. ITs like sunglasses on your lens. That allows me to see both the rainbow and the ground. Usually Polarizers are suggested for shots where the sky is bright. Best effects are always with blue skys and the sun behind you.

I've seen videos of it.
I hope I get a chance to take pictures of nature's light shows.
---
I've always had problems with pictures of scenery including the sky on sunny days.
Is half of the polarizer actually darker, or is it just an effect of the direction of polarization?

geolio In reply to reicirith [2008-09-10 04:34:57 +0000 UTC]

Are you going anytime soon????
-------------
yea it is. it also gets rid of glares. Very useful if you aren't shy of shutter speed

Probably not till next May at the earliest.
School just started for me again, and I'm already buried under a stack of readings.
---------
Yeah, it's exactly what I need.
Perhaps I'll experiment on the smoke stacks when it gets colder.

Dont know, show me how to be discipline, Study 8 hrs a day and work 8 so hrs a day and sleep. (doesn't sound very pragmatic)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

reicirith In reply to geolio [2008-09-12 16:17:27 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I definitely had trouble with that while studying for the MCAT... and I had a no-brainer job (though that did add to the risk of falling asleep on the job).

Luckily for me, I'm quite good at functioning on limited hours of sleep. I pretty much got off work at 5:30, went home and took an hour nap, had dinner, and then studied till 3am, and woke up for work at 7.
But that really means you have no life what-so-ever for however many weeks...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

geolio In reply to reicirith [2008-09-12 17:02:45 +0000 UTC]

However man weeks--> sounds like me since I graduated from school!!!! Lets see if I can sleep less. I actually don't want to cut out any other stuff to study more. MY work is about 12 hrs a day (getting to and back and eating and overtime), Maybe I start by cutting parts of transportation/lunch time on that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

reicirith In reply to geolio [2008-09-13 01:49:53 +0000 UTC]

Aww... well I hope that you at least like your job then.
When are you writing? I only had 10 days to study, so I was in a frenzy. With 12 hours of work, 6 hours of sleep and 2 hours of total eating and travel time... you don't have very much time remaining.
Obviously it's recommended that you get a really good night's sleep the night before though.
How do you cut time on transportation? One would think if anything, that's the activity that's fixed.

geolio In reply to reicirith [2008-09-13 18:45:52 +0000 UTC]

dont know, try to get to work early or late so that I dont hit traffic. That saves another 30 minutes or so. OR I can do flashcards while in traffic. I do flashcards on the subway all the time.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

reicirith In reply to geolio [2008-09-14 23:14:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah that could work. Whether you use the extra 30 min for rest or study, it's still worth it.
Flashcards on the subway can definitely give you extra time if you can concentrate.

Good luck! (Though don't forget to sleep! But only when you start to feel like collapsing. )

Hey, lots of uploads, have you found a mass upload button, hehehe.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

reicirith In reply to geolio [2008-09-17 03:00:36 +0000 UTC]

No... I've just been procrastinating.
I caught up on readings and felt exceptionally accomplished, so I let myself go.

I think I should perhaps write a letter suggesting it. Though I'm not sure who I'd be sending it to.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

geolio In reply to reicirith [2008-09-17 04:05:16 +0000 UTC]

Dont think they would appreciate haveing a mass upload, think about all the server space and all the useless crap ppl would put up here. Selecting your finest work is kinda what I think they had in mind.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

reicirith In reply to geolio [2008-09-17 12:03:04 +0000 UTC]

I suppose. Though not having mass upload doesn't really stop that... it's just a whole lot slower.

Sorry I took so long to reply.
This comment didn't show up on my DA for some reason.

It looks good. It certainly brought the detail back to the picture. Whatever you did made it look like an illustration more than a photo.

So what'd you do to it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

geolio In reply to reicirith [2008-09-17 02:52:48 +0000 UTC]

There's this program that's going around and creating quite a craze call Photomatrix. Supposely you can blend different exposures together and get some really interesting balance of light and dark. The human eye can see about 6 stops while the camera can only see about 3 (2 been recover from Photoshop). So supposely, its more like what your eyes see, not what you interpret. It definitely looks like a illustration. I was meerly trying to even out the lights and darks.

Hm... I've tried to do the exact thing by experimented with various layer types on PS. I sometimes end up with some good results, though I haven't gotten down a "formula for success"...
I wonder if the Photomatrix idea can be replicated with PS...
