The standard gnome-desktop is controlled by nautilus and I don't use nautilus (only thunar). What I've used while using gnome with compiz-fusion is the compiz-deskmenu plugin ([link] ). Maybe you can tweak nautilus to show the panelmenu but I'm not sure about that.
However, if you want to minimalize your desktop I would encourage you to switch to xfce (its similar to gnome but not so bloated). You can use all gnome-panel-plugins in xfce via xfapplets, including the globalmenu plugin (see point 10 in the faq [link] ). Further a right-click desktop menu can easily be configured in the desktop-preferences. Btw, I used xfce (+ compiz-fusion) in all my screenshots (besides 2009-01-09)!

ok well thank you for the reply, I just installed linux mint, but not the xfce version because apparently it's unstable. However, im going to try and instal xfce manually to see how i like it. on the other hand, any linux based programs that you could recommend? Stuff that you use on a regular basis.. thanks

When it comes to applications its just a matter of taste in my opinion (everything has pros and cons). Just try out a few and see what works best for you. Here are some that I use regularly:
Browser: Firefox(+addons(FireFTP, DownThemAll, NoScript...)), Midori(webkit)
Messenger: Pidgin(icq,irc), TeamSpeak, Skype
Editor: (G)Vim, Geany, Mousepad
Office: OpenOffice, evince, nfoview
Audio: mpd (with Sonata and ncmpcpp), gnormalize
Video: mplayer(with SMPlayer and gnome-mplayer), xine(with kaffeine), dvdrip
Images: GQview(mostly), Comix, Mirage
Filemanager: Thunar(mostly), emelfm2
Clipboard: Parcellite
Terminal: urxvt, zsh, screen, htop, rtorrent, weechat, calcurse
Eye-Candy: compiz-fusion, conky, screenlets

So, a friend of mine recommended enlightment window manager. Have you heard of this? Apparently it's light on resources and looks great. Just google enlightment window manager and tell me what you think. Thanks!

I've used e16 and e17 myself. It's not bad but personally I wasn't too happy with it.
Well, its all a matter of taste so you can just try it!
e17 looks pretty good but compared to compiz-fusion (with emerald) its not that special anymore and its pretty complicated to theme... spend alot of time on an e17 theme when it was still in beta.

I see, well I installed Xubuntu with the XFCE GUI and I'm not going to lie...EFFICIENT. Thanks for the apps, I'm using about 60% of them frequently, but I didnt really understand the concept behind the server based music players. Any way you can give me a crash course? Thanks again!

No problem, helping out each other is important in the oss-community. One thing though, I don't know if you already know it but you can simply install and use every window manager that you want without switching your linux distribution. You can install xfce or e17 (or both) on ubuntu for example, no need to switch to Xubuntu. Xubuntu just has xfce as its default wm/de installed and its a dependency as far as I know (the same as ubuntu and gnome). Basically you can install everything on any linux distribution, the different distributions are merely different flavours with a different set of standard apps that are installed by default, with different package management systems, sometimes with different path structures and different kernels. What you install afterwards is completely up to you though.
Well, there is not much to understand about mpd in the first place. mpd is basically just a standalone daemon that organizes your music in a db and plays it over the configured audio-driver. You control it over clients that can be gui- or terminal-based. The benefits of mpd are that it is very resource friendly, doesn't have much dependencies (you can even run it without X, basically you can start mpd directly after the audio daemon is initialised and play music while booting the rest of the system) and you can freely choose the client(frontend). Another benefit of a client-server structure is that you can run the backend on one pc (can be a headless server box) and run the client on another pc (streaming is pretty easy with mpd). Personally I use mpd with sonata and ncmpcpp as frontends. For detailed information and howtos look here: [link]

I love your linux theme/conky. I truly learned so much from just installing your multi-scripted conky. Keep up the good work. Thanks again!
