You have to be a member of the film community to upload film here. You have to submit your work and apply for the privilege here [link]
More about the whole process here [link]
But you have to convert your video to a format and codec that the site supports before hand, and make sure it's in the right pixel and aspect ratio. then you just upload it.

Heya,
How would you rate Shu as a Uni?
I've applied for Film and media production (though I kind of wish I'd gone for film and visual effects, oh well!) and have now been selected for interview.
In your opinion, is it a good Uni? Good facilities, good amount of practical work as well as theory etc.?
I know you're doing a different course an all, but obviously a lot of things will be similar I imagine.

Hey yeah I did thanks.
Sorry, I've only had chance to skim it at the moment.
Been really busy with work and helping my girlfriend move but I'm hoping to have time this weekend to relax and decompress! So I'll give it the attention it deserves then.
Cheers though, even from skimming it seems really in depth which is great, thanks.

Thought you might be interested in my latest project.
ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE!
But, considering it was filmed in under 2 hours, It turned out okay!

Nice work! It is direct and interesting, although I think it needs the opinion of someone from the other end of the spectrum.
Technically it is ok. Some of the shots you were out of focus, and overall I felt it could have used more shots, but considering it was shot in 2 hours you've done a great job!
Nice work, keep sending them my way. I'll have a big project finished in a few months. Happy New Year!

Yeah I agree with needing other opinions, and with needing more shots etc.
It was quite a tough project really, I produced it for a mega media challenge that I was successful for, but due to poor communication and a general sense of neglect from the challenge director, the project that started in October ended up being rushed and hurried in the last week. Not ideal, but none-the-less, it is what it is, and I did what I could.
And yeah, is this 'Mother'? I've been reading about that on your website blog. Sounds very interesting, can't wait to see how this looks with what you've mentioned of visual effects!

Ah, yeah sometimes people like to screw you over, or they get cold feet on the build-up to a shoot. If they are spending money they are normally less likely to run away haha. You did really well considering.
Yep 'Mother'. It's hard work I tell you, but it will be finished around Easter. I have nothing to show yet, so you'll just have to trust me on that one But Filming is happening in less then a month.

Hello, I was wondering if you could tell me where the name '99Media' came from?
As I'm focusing more on film work now, and will continue to do so, I need a kind of logo/name/symbol etc. to be known by, but am not quite sure what type of thing a logo is based off of!
Thanks.

99media In reply to p--O--w [2010-09-27 13:59:24 +0000 UTC]
haha, no problem. It's actually 'ninetynine' but it was taken here, so 99media had to do. Quite simply, I chose it because it doesn't mean anything. I didn't want people to pigeon hole me or have a prejudice about my work before they contacted me. But if you make nothing but horror films, then perhaps 'twisted pictures' or 'warp movies' would be a good idea. It all comes down to what you want to portray yourself as. The logo was just something simple, that could be worked into different shapes and designs in the future.

Ahh thanks a lot, I can see your point. And after looking at a few examples, very few seem to have a definite theme behind them to link to a certain genre. I think i'll go down a similar route, perhaps chose something that inspires me or something like that, and then work from it.
Thanks again.

Hello, I was wondering if you could tell me what equipment you use to produce your videos.
In particular, what camera (and lenses if interchangeable) and what software for the various parts of post production.
Thank you.

Hi there, long time no see
The camera I used in all these videos is the Sony HC1e (I'm UK based). It's a pretty good, low end cam. Not great in low light, but it gives you nice HD footage. The whole thing was stock. The mic I use is a Zoom H4.
Recently, I've been using a Canon 500D/Rebel T1i. It's stock apart from a 50mm f1.8 lens. That is a great lens, gives you great images. So hard to use though. The Canon isn't ideal for video, it makes it very hard work. But it is a stepping stone until I can get the 7D, which will be in the near future hopefully. A much better equipped camera.
Software is Final Cut Pro for editing, After Effects for titles and effects, Magic Bullet for colour correction. And some stuff I'm working on uses Maya more. My YouTube Channel has a few bits not on here...
[link]
I'm Mac based you cans see. Adobe Premiere is a pretty solid editor, but the colour correction is very bad. Better off sticking AE or Magic Bullet and let them do it instead.

Hey, thanks for the reply and detailed information!
I need to buy a mic pronto and the one you mentioned has got some great reviews so I think i'll buy that when I get the money together.
I myself have the 500D and I recently purchased the 50mm f1.8 II. I agree it's great for photography but the whole package together can make it difficult for filming. Would you suggest splashing out for a camcorder such as the Sony HC1e or just to put up with the 500D and practice a lot with it?
As for software, I have After Effects but am currently using Sony Vegas Pro for actual editing - it's not bad but pre-rendering is awfully slow!
I'll look into getting Magic Bullet as it sounds great for colour correction.
A couple more questions however, sorry! Whenever I render a finished movie, even ones about 4:00 minutes long, if I save in HD the file is around 10gb and unplayable. Is there a way to better compress the film as I can't yet save to a DVD?
Also, what's the best way to export an unfinished film from one program to another? At the moment I just save the file as a finished film format but of course the quality can decrease somewhat if done a lot etc.
Thanks again for the information and for any future help. I'm asking as I have a short film in the works - early stages but soon-ish i'll be needing to apply this stuff!

No worries!
The Zoom H4 isn't a proper camera mic. It's designed for singers/ect but it has got better audio then any shotgun mic I have used for the same price. The only problem is you have to record the audio and sync it up later, so keeping track of where you are is way more important than usual.
About the 500D, it all depends on what you are looking for from a camera. I find image quality really important, and I tend to use a lot of locked down shots and slow dollys. So I can put up with the lack of film features the Canon has for the image it gives. If you are the 'run and gun' type film maker then you'll appreciate the exposure lock, and a decent auto focus, so maybe the HC1 would be better. However, you will love seeing your film made with that 50mm lens
Magic Bullet is a good choice. I have Looks, it gives you a bunch of presets which you can edit as you need. Its a good way or working and figuring out how the colour correction works. Magic Bullet Colorista works much the same as the 3 Way Colour Corrector in FCP. Magic Bullet Mojo is very stripped down version of Looks. Basically you get one 'look' and you get the choice of vamping it up somewhat.
Unfortunately that's what happens with HD! You either need more RAM , or you need to export you videos in a lower quality for viewing on your computer. Use H.264 coding. It's a pretty good balance of file size and quality.
You should always export your files as full quality, because then no quality is lost when it is processed. If you don't then every time you use the footage in something else, the quality will decrease. Normally I make a highest quality 'master' and then compress it in the various ways needed. For web, iPods ect.
anyway, you better let me know when you have something new on here, looking forward to what you make

Thanks again for the information.
I think I will stick with the 500D simply to reduce cost, and I've had a little play and for what I'm doing it works fine, so with practice I should be able to create something good with it!
And yeah I guessed with the ZoomH4 syncing would be the biggest issue, but I have enough time to spend on that so I don't think that will put me off!
I'll definitely look into getting some Magic Bullet software, thanks for describing some of the features.
I'm also upgrading my laptop soon to a more powerful device so hopefully the problem's I'm having with HD footage won't be such an issue. Thanks for the advice regarding the H.264 format, i'll be sure to use that!
And thank you, I'll be cracking on with it soon-ish so I'll be sure to show you what I'll be getting up to!

Yeah that's what I am doing for now until I work on something major
You can get fantastic results with the 500D, but you have to plan an awful lot. Syncing isn't so bad, I normally just shout out the take number with both cameras running, then click my fingers in front of the lens. Works a charm
The great thing about using the Z4 though, is you can record in stereo instead of mono, and also it's a condenser mic, so if you put it really close facing your talent's mouth you get hardly any noise from elsewhere. And the sound i nice and balanced, not tinny like on some mics.
So anyway, I guess I'll speak to you soon Keep me posted. Any other questions, feel free to contact me.
