You should do both of these things yesss we need more active english-speaking fanartists T_T Why does the oldness put you off? Not a style you like?? I recommend buying the dub if you can, it kind of takes away from some of the heartwreching moments but it's a mix of really good and really funny, makes watching it more enjoyable XD

I can't say much about the manga, I've only bought up to 6 (working on it!), and then online, only after vol 20 is available...everything I read tho I liked, there's definitely some huge differences from the anime so it's worth reading for that alone, plus...it's gorier hahaha which I love
