Hey div, nice gallery. Remember me, monkey boy from the entheology.org forum. Long time no chat.
I've been watching the weather ever since you told me to wait for september 2007, and now that it's around the corner I've been thinking about you and our past conversations.

Hey aLinor, sorry for long delay in reply (been up to other thangs lately). Tks for your comment! And all the tiger pictures were taken at the Minnesota Zoo (I live close by, so I visit there quite often). I think most of the pictures are of the females, which play a lot - the males are too lazy to bother with - ha.

Sweet work, my friend - I am impressed. What kind of digital camera do you use? Whatever it is, it pwns mine. Great job.

Sorry for the delay in my reply (I'm so behind in so many things now - ha), but to answer your question, I use a Canon 20D, which I just love (it's what I would call the first "practical" consumer priced digital camera I've ever seen or used - it is actually capable of take photos that rival film, especially long night exposures). I also have a little Sony T1 that I sometimes use when I don't have my real camera along, but it's that CMOS chip in those Canon cameras that really excels when it comes to digital photography. It can even allow an amateur like me take reasonably neat photos - ha, but to really appreciate what that camera can do you have to view those photos printed in all it's full resolution and color. Reduction to 1280 and using JPG simply ruins most of what you see.

Ah-ha! Well, it IS a Canon, but it's one of those wire-thin Digital ELPH ones that automatically saves your pictures in JPG format on the memory chip. So I suppose I'll have to find a way on the camera to get it to save high-res PNG from now on, if possible. Thanks for the tip.

GEE PEOPLE, WHAT'S WITH ALL THE TINY PICTURES HERE ON DA? Again and again, I see some thumbnail of what looks to be another potentially wonderful photo here - except for the fact that they are so darn tiny you can't make out any of the details in them, and thus they are even worth a fullview.
I know these 21st century digital cameras are capable of capturing much higher resolution images, but golly people, what's with the constant stream of all this useless tiny under-appreciated works of microscopic digital photography and art? Even the supposed pros post what looks like tiny little photos taken with a 1995 digital camera. What's the problem here, pros? Can't most of you take a nice large full-res detailed photo? Hahaha, come on you pros, buy a better camera and toss away those 640x480 or 800x60 or whatever 20th century cameras you are all still using. Good grief, what a waste of my time to click on something which I think is going to be neat to look at only to find I'm looking at something that must have been digitally photographed or scanned with 15 year old technology. Gee people, post something that at least fills our screen to it's maximum so we can appreciate what it is you are trying to show us. Those tiny little images that can't even fill a typical 1280x800 LCD make me think you pros out there are trying to hide something faulty in your work. And as a pro I'd think you would be embarrassed to post something of a level of quality someone's granny could do better at with a $99 Wal-Mart digital camera found in the toy department - ha.
I am no longer going to appear impressed when I see tiny stuff - especially when it appears the photographer is a pro using pro gear that should be capable of much better. In fact, I'm going to start commenting: COULDN'T YOU DO BETTER THAN THAT WITH A NIKON (or whatever)? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR CAMERA? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOUR TECHNIQUE? WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO HIDE? DID YOUR GRANDMA TAKE THAT WITH HER $99 WAL-MART DIGITAL?

BTW, I have another comment to make here. What's with all the tiny images I see even after zooming in? Why does it seem like most everyone here uploads such DARN TINY versions of their art and photography? HUM? I mean, I would think something like 1280x800 pixels should be the MINIMUM ... not the recommended/suggested MAXIMUM. And people would be at least upload images AT the maximum size, as opposed to the MINIMUM size. ???
What the heck is anyone going to do with such a tiny images? You can't use it for Windows wallpaper. You can barely appreciate it because it's so tiny and thus lacks the resolution to include any kind of detail. You can't use it to print anything other than maybe postage stamps - ha. Come on people, put something out there large enough that I can wrap around my FACE and go OH and WOW about - ha, or at least large enough to set as wallpaper.
Gee, I mean come on, if you are going through all the trouble to take a nice photo to share here with everyone, why not put it out there large enough so that it can be fully appreciated and useful in way we can really actually appreciate? I myself try to at least post 1280x800 images so that they can at least be used for a day or two as windows wallpaper on most peoples screens (of course that only works for landscape perspectives). But really folks, when I see something really beautiful you've posted here, and would love to set that as my background for a day or so, or hang a 8.5x11 version on the wall for a week or so (I'm not one into buying and hanging up a lot of art, and if I do it's not for a LONG TIME - I like to keep things fresh and ever changing), what good are these tiny 800x600 pixel (or similar small sized) images good for anyhow, except to print maybe postage-stamp size printouts? hum? Even 1280x800 is pretty darn small and not useful for much more than windows wallpaper.
But seriously, why is it so many post such tiny versions of their stuff here that is useless for anything practical? If it can't be used for anything, why bother posting/sharing those tiny things, except maybe to be used as wallpaper on your cell phone screens or mp3 player screens - ha? hum?

Hum, I'm starting to think that it's probably time to give up here on this DA thang, there just doesn't seem to ever be much traffic/activity on this system/site compared to other MUCH MORE popular photographer/artist sites. On two other sites I post photos to, EVERYONE seems to get at least a few hundred page visits each MONTH.
And DA doesn't seem to do any kind of advertising, I mean I've never seen any advertising. Everyone I talk to around here has never heard of DA (other than me, and I ran across it accidentally). Hum....
I've been posting here for almost a year now and only 551 pageviews? Most pages get that many hits from search engines alone. And of those 500+ pageviews, probably half were my own visits - ha. Gee, I get almost twice that many visitors on one of my own web site each WEEK! Seems to me that maybe DA is on the down and out? Or rather, maybe it was never up and in? Without much traffic here on DA, what's the point in posting, when nobody is bother to even look to see what you have in your gallery? In fact, it seems almost DEAD around here. I mean HELLO ? .... HELLO ? ..... ha ha ha .... HELLO ? ... .... ya see, nobody heard me ... there's nobody here. .... ... ... and I think I know where they all most likely went though .... ... and maybe it's time for me to get over there too. Well, we'll wait a full year and see if we can average at least maybe 2 pageviews a day.
I feel like I'm locked away all alone in some dank basement here on DA! (or is that pageview counter one of those "in the thousands" counters? - ha, I doubt it - ha)

I know what you mean I think DA tends to be more of a hang out for the kiddo's than a place for serious art work. Unless you paint/photograph something that appeals to the under 20 crowd, there's not much interest.
Then again, maybe I'm just a crotchety old person ROFL!
I hope you come back and post when you feel like it. I'm taking a break from this place too, but I'll drop by occasionally Hope to 'see' you around!

Yeah, I get the impression that this is where all the starving anime-artists hang-out trying to make a buck off each other (probably the same dollar being passed around - ha). Of course there's a lot of stuff to wade through here too, but much of it I must finally admit is crap (well not really CRAP crap, some yes - but I mean: hey people, what's with all the cheap $300 plastic digital full-auto camera poorly framed instamatic snapshots of some cute duck that landed in your backyard ? ... Come on now people - ha, enough already - especially those who have to post all 10 or 20 or 30 of them duck in the yard pictures they took - ha ha ha ... gee, I know, a duck in YOUR BACK YARD is oh-so-neat ! ... but come on now, show me a picture that I can envy and drool over - ha ha ha ... and learn from !!! )
Anyhow, not intending to insult anyone - but I think everyone around here would benefit greatly if we all were a lot more open and HONEST about what we see! I certainly welcome constructive negative feedback (I mean, how else am I going to learn if you're not standing right here next to me with a big stupid stick - ha ha ha).
It's becoming oh-so-difficult to get to the good stuff here ... and you can't rely on any kind of ranking numbers here to find the hidden good stuff ... ... It seems you almost have to become a sell-out and turn your hobby into something commercial and start selling posters and prints here before they let you out of the basement - ha ha ha. Seriously, I've seem some really horrible quality photos being featured here merely because the photographer made them available for sale ... yet I see a LOT MUCH BETTER stuff posted here by others not into the $$$ thang and they aren't even noticed ... because they are kept buried ... because they aren't into this for the money ... or vanity ... or their ego either - ha ha ha ...

ha ha ha, thanks, and yeah, I've been trying to get better ... and I just yesterday acquired a new lens that will really help (technically ... and if anything, spending the additional funds for this hobby will be an incentive to get better ... otherwise I've just wasted my money - ha) .. I finally decided upon the macro lens that will get me closer to capturing what I want to capture .. of course this does make things more difficult for ME too ... it's a 180mm Tamron macro, which might seem counter productive for an aging photographer like me about a year from the big five-oh (shake shake shake - ha) .. ... It all has just become more challenging ... and THAT is what I like about this hobby too ... ... Now, if this planet will only last long enough for me to eventually finishing my commission work here on earth, I think I'm maybe a year away from getting that ONE picture I've been waiting to take ... and then I can get off this stinking planet and get back home ... ha ha ha .... ...

There's nothing like investing money in a (hobby?! doesn't feel like a hobby, does it?) to keep you motivated Besides, now you have to get a hang of the new equipment, that's usually fun and challenging enough to keep your interest up. I love exploring the abilities/limitations of a new media or bit of techie stuff--helps keep those grey cells awake
I look forward to seeing some photos with this new lens....

Yeah, it's going to be tricky trying to get a (technically) good picture with a 180mm macro, even the subtle sound of silence seems to cause the camera and subject to appear to have moved/vibrated while the shutter is open - ha, and it's hard to get your heart to stop beating while the shutter is open for a few seconds too. I think a better tripod is on the board next, drawing board maybe, meaning I haven't yet found a decent tripod that seems to be completely logical in design and use, so I may have to manufacture one (actually, I'm seriously putting some thought in to this - I have a couple of ideas). A tripod should act like a brick .... you shouldn't have to wait 10 seconds for the thing to stop vibrating after a fly happens to land on thing - ha.

LOL you sound like my husband...we need a scale for our son to use for homeschooling, so my husband says...why buy one? lets make one, it'll be fun... I like that attitude.
Well, you'll have to take a pic of the tripod and show off your handy work when it's finished. What do you do in the meantime? Stop breathing when you take photos, I guess

Tks, but really, I've just begun, and know I have a lot to learn. I'm envious of some of the really serious photographers I've seen here. And regarding that T1 camera, no, I think I mentioned in only those photos which were taken with that little T1 what they were (which I always have along for convenience). My favorite camera at the moment is my Canon 20D, which I've had for almost a year now. One day I may drop everything else I'm doing, and start doing THIS 24x7 (I'm having that much fun - ha).

Oh, that explains why the pictures look so great, it would have been impossible for a T1 to take them! I have begun taking pictures 3 years ago but I haven't learned much since then. I am also very envious of the photographers I've seen here... as a matter of fact, I am very envious of you too I am going to start a photography course on CDs made by the National Geographic a friend of mine gave me, that might help me improve my skills... and of course I need a better camera than a Canon A80.
Thanks for the watch!

Divinorumus In reply to krige [2006-01-12 23:38:40 +0000 UTC]
Well, that little Sony T1 can still take some decent photos, for such a tiny little camera. Probably the one I liked the most is this photo of the bee I took earlier this summer: [link] which was reduced to 1280x800 to fit my laptop screen before uploading here, so it looks even better printed on a 3 foot poster sized print ... and I might upload that original, assuming DA does not frown on 3.5+ MB JPG files - ha). I've been into photography on/off as a hobby for many years. I've never taken any photography classes (except for a darkroom class back in high school many years ago, which is where I learned how to develope film and paper), and I probably wouldn't want to take any photo classes myself at this point in my life, preferring to learn on my own and develope my own style and way and means and methods of doing things and whatever (as opposed to coming out of some class having learned how to do things the same way everyone else has been taught - ha ... know what I mean? See all those photos on DA with the black borders around them??? What's up with THAT? Of course, I would like to learn more about how to use all the features and tricks found in Photoshop so I can do a better job at post processing (the digital version of all that darkroom work).
BTW, Canon's make the best digital cameras (as least consumer grade/priced cameras), because their CMOS image sensor technology is excellent ... expecially for night photography, which is what I enjoy the most. Even some of the Nikon followers are switching over to Canon digital SLRs - ha.
