by the way, great calligraphy! very expressive I'm starting to learn a bit of Japanese calligraphy too, and I now know how difficult it is not just to get the construction right, but to get the balance, as well as to have it express something, so great job! I hope that I'll get to be even half as good someday

I'll cheer for you! Yes, calligraphy is not easy, but is does get considerably easier once your hand has got used to the unique writing technique.
Feel free to ask any questions on calligraphy, I'll be more than glad to help you out.
Cheers

aww thanks so much, I really appreciate it! hmm. well I've picked up some basic Japanese calligraphy books and I'm almost finished with them. However, would you have any recommendations on what to read or look for in order to make my kanji more expressive?

Well... Shodo in English is not very widespread...
I've got Takeda Souun's Shodo Nyuumon 書道入門 which I have found the best Shodo textbook so far. Also Tanaka's of the same title. If you're more into theory and historical overviews, I recommend Yokoyama Houran's 書道の教科書 Shodo no kyoukasho; all are in Japanese though. But the models are VERY good in these!

Thank you for the book titles and the advice, no these are quite helpful, and I can read Japanese to a fair degree so I could probably work these out! I just can't figure out how you go about writing with your own style after copying a few characters. I mean, how do you adopt that style for all the kanji that you write that might not be present in that particular textbook? Happy holidays by the way!

Yes, well most of the time the Kanji are written in Kaisho, since the're textbooks. Some of them do take the trouble to go into Gyousho, but other than that, it's very rare. But usually there are some pieces at the very end of thexe textbooks that enumerate quite a range of styles, and one may get some inspiration. Other than that...well...
But is you like the "味" of some style, then you should just experiment and mess around with the brush until it feels right. If it feels right, you're very close. Everyone has their favourite styles, and it wouldn't even be possible to write a textbook on shodo styles, sincs there are just so many, and everyone likes another one.
I exceptionally like the work of Takeda Sou'un 武田双雲、check him out on Facebook: [link]
But Ishitobi Hakkou 石飛博光 is also verz good. They have completely different styles!

Thank you for the very detailed replies, and it does help to know that a lot of calligraphy is also what you make of it will try to master kaisho first and then see how it goes from there! Thank you again for all your advice!

Feri-kun In reply to SayuriMVRomei [2012-05-16 15:04:43 +0000 UTC]
I spent four months (Feb-May) in 南大坂.
We had language training along with different kinds of cultural immersions such as 着付け、茶道、居合道、料理、能・狂言, Partner-University visit and study trips to 広島、宮島、大宰府、熊本、京都、奈良。^^
I found it very inspiring and will never forget the good times we had. 国際交流基金、関西国際センター was the institute that organized everything; it was a scholarship.
