Hello, I was wondering if you could give some tips on drawing background and such. I'm a student who's currently trying to figure out how exactly to draw these backgounds (in a decent way) because I honestly never drew one a day in my life. (As in, I have never drawn good one lol.)
Do I have to use a different programs? (I use paint tool sai)
What brush do you have to use?
Do I follow by reference of actual places or come up with them for the top of my mind?
And if you have any extra pointers, I'll happily heard more as I like to learn about art

Alrighty, first of all what kinda student? Art school or just highschool etc? Bc if youre in artschool you might learn about it sooner or later same goes for highschool artclass i think.
Anyways, as anything in art, landscapes are a big topic and you learn most from experience, and practice. There is no way you can learn this in a day, it takes time and effort. Im not perfect at it either because i still have tons to learn.
Thats just for a small introduction, but dont be discouraged! Learning can be so fun if youre dedicated!!
So as for the programs; You could literally paint with anything. Its really not about the tools. The tools wont make you better, and they also wont make you worse. You have to try out what youre comfortable with, and i know this sounds hypocritical but i for example use Photoshop, but i pay it with comission money annually, which might be too pricey for you. I have no experience in SAI so use it as you wish, but i always felt like its lacking unless you use custom brushes.
As for reference: ALWAYS USE REFERENCE. Unless youve drawn something so much that you know every nuck and cranny of it by heart USE REFERENCE. It will be hard to get used to, it sure was for me as someone whos drawn stylized all their life, but its important to stop stylizing everything. Practicing drawing naturalistically or "realistically" is the most important thing to achieve better stylization. In short: get reference for what you want to draw, study it by trying to understand the object and understanding shapes and texture, then when you feel safe with the object, stylize it as you wish.
As for landscape in general theres principles and rules you can look up, most of which are simple to learn and understand.
I hope this helps, and it does sound alot because i remember it did to me, but since i started doing it I've noticed alot of improvement, and again nobody will ever be perfect, so don't be intimidated by other artists!! Everyone starts somewhere!
