I got 3 hermit crabs in 2009, and now I have a large colony of purchases and rescues. I have learned a lot in my few years, and hope to start a captive breeding program and full-fledged hermit crab rescue someday. Check my gallery for pics of my invertebrate friends, and their offspring. My photography:

Hi there,Β
I'm currently working for a UK-based production company called Wag TV where we are producing a new series for Animal Planet - we're featuring a story about hermit crabs and would love to use a video you took of one of your hermit crabs chirping, posted on YouTube. Apologies for contacting you on here, I have also tried your YouTube account. Please do let me know if you'd be happy to licence it - my email is Ngunary@wagtv.com.Β
Many thanks!Β

I know!! I'm so bad at HCA now. I go on at least once every 2-3 days just to see that it's still there. Not much woods playing (I need to change that), but MUCH chocolate eating today. My gram sent me valentines day boxes of yum. But I decided to liquify some marmot flesh (long story), so my appetite for chocolate has diminished considerably since the boxes arrived earlier. lol. I'm hoping the smell will go away and I can eat more chocolate.
I hope you're having fun you temperate rainforest fairy princess of the pacific northwest (compliment).

Eee... I know how you feel. I've been trying to graduate so HCA has taken a back seat.Β
Definitely change the woods playing and, uh, flesh.. thing. Meanwhile I'm having even more fun in the dry midland since I moved in with dad and started getting my life back together and seeing a counsellor and having a cat <3 so lots of good things here

I was wondering if you have any tips for introducing a new crab to one that's already been there. I have one named Shelly but I want to get her a friend since being along could be stressing her out. Any help would be great, thanks!

I'm wondering, how do you determine how old a crab is? I think mine are babies since they're pretty small, but I have no idea how to actually tell. Thank you!

Just got my 2nd order from you. Thanks so much for the free gift! My favourite crab, Squib, is nuts about the comfrey flowers. All of my crabs are growing SO fast and I think it's because of the food and supplies I've ordered from you!

Hi there
I just bought two hermit crabs and Im just wondering ... what do they it beside food that I bought from the pet shop...
Do they it fruits also ??

GodzillaHermitCrab In reply to FaaR0uT [2013-02-19 23:25:58 +0000 UTC]
Their main diet should be animal protein and fruit. They also eat veggies (including leaves, bark, flowers, etc), and other things like bee pollen, honey, feces, etc. Most people choose not to feed the commercial foods because of all the added preservatives and flavors. There are very few safe commercial foods. Plus, feeding the same thing every day is not good because these crabs are "programmed" to avoid recently eaten foods. Here are a few links for you to take a look at.

Though breeding hermit crabs won't certainly be a walk in the park, I just wanna that I wish you the best of luck rearing the crab zoea and that may these young ones flourish and grow. Also, I would recommend culturing plankton for the babies to eat. Again, I wish you the best of luck on your breeding crabs.

Hi.i think you are amazing. I have 10 crabs in a huge tank. More i think to come soon and about 200 shells. Do you have any ideas on what to do with so many shells?
π: 0 β©: 1
GodzillaHermitCrab In reply to AxelLover4life [2012-10-22 05:14:21 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. What do you mean about the shells? How to offer them to your crabs without having a tank full of shells? You can rotate them every few days. That's what I do.

I saw your little Crabby Greenhouse sketch, that would be cool. A crab room!
Though here's a crab care question--about how often do you recommend a full tank-clean (depending on tank size and crab numbers)? I've just got the five little bitty crabs in a 10 gallon for the moment, with a couple inches of coconut fiber. They eat and poop way more than I thought they would though! (In fact, they have a habit of emptying the food dish and leaving turds in it for me...)

GodzillaHermitCrab In reply to BrittaM [2012-07-22 00:30:06 +0000 UTC]
For smaller tanks, every 6 months is the norm. For larger ones (40+ gallons) Once a year is good. Some people do half-cleans where they only replace half of their substrate to keep the good bacteria that decompose poop and stuff. As for me, I did it every 6 months, but switched to once a year this year, but I plan on doing it every 2 years in the future since I have critters in there that do my cleaning for me like isopods and springtails. So it really depends on your setup. But yeah, for you right now, every 6 months would be good.
They poop in the weirdest places!! I hate it. Always in the shells and the pools for me. lol

BrittaM In reply to GodzillaHermitCrab [2012-07-24 16:32:27 +0000 UTC]
Alrighty, thanks for the input! I wouldn't have wanted to do it too often, didn't want to disturb the environment in there too much (even though I don't have a cleanup crew, yet!) Rather than just cleaning the tank then, I'll probably buy a bigger one for them to put the clean stuff in. Big tank! More space! Hope they don't get lost in it ;D

Hi, I do have a question actually. My one crab (spidey) moved shells twice in one day, is this normal?
π: 0 β©: 1
GodzillaHermitCrab In reply to WheresWaldo878 [2012-07-09 02:44:07 +0000 UTC]
Yep. Very normal. Some will change shells very often like that, others can be more stubborn and stay in the same shell for years.

WheresWaldo878 In reply to GodzillaHermitCrab [2012-07-10 03:14:31 +0000 UTC]
Okay one more question, they kinda huddle together a lot? I mean when they're sleeping they always end up right next to each other is this coincidence or are they buddies?
π: 0 β©: 1
GodzillaHermitCrab In reply to WheresWaldo878 [2012-07-10 04:57:31 +0000 UTC]
It's probably because they either like the conditions in that spot (maybe hotter or higher humidity), or because they feel safer in that spot. They are also very social animals, and may enjoy the company, too. Could be any or all of these thing.

WheresWaldo878 In reply to GodzillaHermitCrab [2012-07-16 03:21:48 +0000 UTC]
And another question, because i really dont know who else to ask, i haven't seen either of my hermit crabs move in the past could of days, there food is untouched and im really worried :\

GodzillaHermitCrab In reply to WheresWaldo878 [2012-07-16 06:49:29 +0000 UTC]
Well, not moving is a pretty good sign that something(s) in their environment are not very good. If you could answer a few questions for me, it would help tremendously if you want my help to correct the problemse. There are a lot of questions, so please make sure you answer them fully and to the best of your ability. Take time to read over your answers to make sure you answered all of the Q's.
1. What is the temperature of your tank?
2. What do you use to heat the tank?
3. What is the humidity?
4. What kind of substrate do you have?
5. How deep is it?
6. Is it moist?
7. What foods do you feed?
8. What kinds of water do you have? (fresh/salt?)
9. Is the water treated/dechlorinated? If so, with what brand?
10. If you have salt water, how do you mix it and with what brand?
11. What size tank do you have in gallons?
12. How many crabs do you have?
13. Do they have places to hide?
14. How often do you take them out of the tank and for how long?
15. Do you bathe your crabs?
