I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but I'll try my best to answer.
If you're worried about copyright, anything you create (as long as it's not using other people's IP) belongs entirely to you automatically.  You don't necessarily have to go file for a certificate or anything.

If you're asking about branding, that's a much more complicated question lol.  It takes a long time to build up a fan base to get recognition for a brand. 
My recommendation is to first explore your art and experiment as much as possible.  While developing your skills you'll start to notice that you prefer to draw or create in a certain kind of way and will eventually develop your own style.
Styles are always a combination of whatever kind of media you actively consume, so it's always a good idea to surround yourself with a variety of different artists (as well as mediums) to draw from for inspiration.
If you get infatuated too much with one artist you'll most likely try to copy them exactly and that's not what you want to do if you want to be recognized for your own style.  (why hire a newbie clone when you can hire the real deal who has way more experience, you know?)

Think about what kind of themes and messages you want to portray in your art.  Think about objects or symbols that have a significant meaning to you.
What's important to your life should be important in your art, and eventually other people who share the same beliefs will find you and want to purchase your work.
What builds a good brand is a balance of consistency in quality and themes but a variety in content.

Now obviously there are sometimes short cuts.  But those same short cuts have consequences as well.  For example: fanart.  If you want to draw fanart, don't just draw whatever you think is popular.  Draw characters from shows you actually really like, or else it's not worth your time.  And when you create fanart of your favorite shows people who also like those shows will be attracted by it, thus bringing you closer to an audience that likes what you like and what you want to create.  Downside to fanart is you can only really make a buck off of it in the short term and usually small scale.  If you don't create original ideas, you'll never be a big player in the art and entertainment world. It is manageable to make a living off of making fanart, but it's a lot of hard work keeping up with new trends and if you get too big you either need to get licensing or you run the risk of getting sued.  All the while, you could be using your time to make your dream project a reality.

So I'm not sure if I went way off on a tangent, but I hope this helped.  If I totally didn't answer what you were asking feel free to elaborate on what you're looking for lol.

Kya! It was fun seeing you too!
I got a table for next year so we can hopefully have more hangout times then!

I ended up breaking even so I guess it worked out heh. And now I have a much better idea of what to prepare for my next cons.
