It's more complex than confusing, really. My best recommendation would be to use CGcookie when getting into new areas, and then use the documentation over on the Blender Wiki when you get stuck, or aren't sure what you need to be doing/what's going on. The biggest thing though is to just keep plugging away, keep focusing on just 'playing' with certain aspects. Take a day, set up a cube on a plane, and just start playing with the point light settings until you get a grasp on what each setting is doing. Tinkering is going to be your best friend.

I don't see why not, especially if he's already familiar with some other modeling software, something like Google Sketchup. What he made was very simple, practically a box, so it's not entirely un-conceivable that he could've picked up just enough modeling and shading stuff to do that. I taught myself Bethesda's Fallout 3 creator in just a day over a weekend, but I'd worked in other game engine's creators prior to that.

Well, it looks really impressive for a non-expert. I mean, he even did the animation. We had Maya at university, that was a pain in the ass, could never figure out the rendering so everything I made there just looked ugly. Perhaps I should try Blender

Just a warning, from everything I've heard Blender is a bit more difficult than Maya. I haven't used it years though. Since you *are* willing to try it though, here's some free resources and advice!

Documentation: [link] Anything you really need to know about how Blender's working is in there somewhere.
Tutorials: [link] [link] Before you go ahead and start looking up modeling or rendering, you're going to watch some intros to the Blender interface and follow along. Blender's a bit counter-intuitive at first(Right-clicking is your mane selection button! )but once you're familiar with it it makes for a smooth workflow. There's also a set of presets that map buttons to feel like 3Ds Max or Maya, though I'm not sure how well those works.

It's not technically a community college, but it has the same student-makeup as one. I'm at an off-branch of a satellite campus of Kent State. And the student body there varies from annoying conservative whose mommy and daddy have taken care of everything and students who have had to live on their own since high-school and have pretty much had all the life drained out of them. I've met one person there so far whose both tolerable to be around AND still has a personality X3
