“Goddamn! Goddamn.” Tony stepped back, stunned. The battering ram was a man wearing a pinstriped suit and long leather coat. A black fedora was set with a single coral-coloured feather on his head, and under the rim the hook of his nose curved. He stumbled back into the wall, his equipment clattering out of his hands. He instantly swooped, catching it by the conical implement that was connected to an oblong box with a length of coiled copper wire. He swung the box back into his hands, breathing again. Finally, he looked up at Tony, and recognition dawned on his face.

“Tony.”

“Ali. What do you think you’re doing, barging around like that?” The pressman righted himself. He was a giant of a man, six and a half feet in height with coppery hair sticking out from underneath his hat. He positively towered over Tony and Peter.

“Oi. Watch your tongue. You weren’t looking where you were going.” His stony grey eyes scanned Tony, narrowing at the sight of his lurid orange waistcoat, and stopping at the ukulele. “What’s that?” Tony repositioned the ukulele defensively.

“It’s a ukulele, darn it.”

“Why had it been decorated with daisy chain patterns?”

Peter appeared at Alastair’s elbow. He had collected the pile of papers that had flown beyond the pavement and was scanning the uppermost sheet. Alastair grunted to acknowledge his presence, and whipped the papers from his hand. Peter caught his unwilling eye and smiled.

“It’s nice to see you again, Alastair.”

“I just wish I could say the same for you.” Peter laughed and pointed at the papers, running a fingertip over the name at the top of the sheet.

“You’ve pulped out an obituary for John. Only took a few hours, didn’t it? Are you getting that on the press for the evening papers or are you going to wait for the morning?”

“It’s going out to the newsstands tonight. We want to print it before any of the other papers. I was actually making my way back to Stobbart Street just as you rudely interrupted my passage, I should have you know.”

“But if you delayed the obituary until the morning, you could get an interview with Tony. How about that?” Peter offered smoothly, “none of the other papers will be able to get their hands on a blood relative to make a statement.” Alastair shook his head impatiently.

“The editor wants it out this evening, and I’ve already quoted ‘close family members’. There’s no need.”

“Who would that be?” Tony asked sharply, “There are only my sisters and I left. Cynthia and Emilia have been walled up in the academy for half a year and Fanny’s on a voyage to the Americas.”

“It’s journalistic code for fabrication, isn’t it Alastair?” Peter said silkily, before Alastair could open his mouth. “I was a pressman on Stobbart long enough to learn that trick. Longer than you’ve been there, in fact.”

“You.” Peter held up his hands as Alastair jabbed an accusatory finger at his chest. “Keep your pretty little tongue pinned in the back of your throat.” Tony jumped between them, pushing them apart with a nervous chuckle and crunched his heel meaningfully into Peter’s toes.

“Why don’t you tell Ali the good news?”
