It's a form of status. The better the artist, the more watchers, the more llamas they have. It's like "I like your art, and you are a great artist. Here's a Llama."
At a certain number of Llamas, the Llama changes it's look, from a Regular, to a Super Llama, the an Albino, to a Super albino, and so on.
Usually, the way it goes is "Get a Llama, Give a Llama", meaning that when someone gives you a llama, one gives the sender one too. It's free and easy. On the person's profile, select "View Badges" or whatnot, then choose "Give Llama Badge" then follow the instructions. Additionally, one can trade DA Points for a Llama Badge, which I wouldn't recommend. Not worth it, IMHO.

TL;DR - Llama Badges are full of win, so give everyone a Llama so everyone can be happy!
