thats ok...I was thinking about gettinga bigger cage but I just don't have enough money...he seems to be fine in the cedar ... I didn't know that though...he seems to function like normal.

They're both very common mistakes, thank you for replying in a mature manner, I don't always get that rarity!
It's sad that pet companies still market pine and cedar and pet stores still carry it but it the oils in it (the same ones that give them both that woodsy smell) irritate the respiratory tract, eventually leading to respiratory infections and liver problems. The shelter I volunteer at uses pine for their cat litter boxes and now I'm allergic to pine from being exposed to it!
Aspen is a safe wood litter (which I'm not allergic to-just the strong oils of pine) and paper pellets/bedding is even better! I used crown animal bedding (pellets) but yesterday's news, soft sorbent, carefresh(freeze for 48 hrs before use to kill mites), fresh world bedding, ecolitter, etc are all great too!
I use fleece in my guinea pig cage without any litter as it's quicker and easier for me to clean (I have a 2x6 grid cage) and I've had problems in the past of someone leaving a door open, a fly coming in, and laying eggs in the guinea pig litterbox RIGHT after I finished cleaning it and the first pee was in it! Very frustrating! So now I just do guinea pig laundry and it saves me tons of money on litter.
The advantages of a c&c cage are; it's easier to clean, believe it or not! It's easier to interact with your pigs if you don't put a lid on it (to keep other pets or kids out for example), your pig will THANK you for the extra room! You can also provide much more hidey houses/beds/toys to play in and your pig can run laps, and it lets a pig exercise when THEY want to which is essential for their health as sometimes you just put them on the floor and they just sit there! This is especially important for boars, who are prone to impaction. It's also very cheap to build! If you get the coroplast at a sign shop and the grids at a cheap place like walmart, your whole cage will cost around $35 with materials to spare. You can even use a waterproof shower curtain instead of coroplast, in a pinch.

Haha thanks! You run that local rattery! Yay! I just became a fan of your facebook group. What markings do you work with? I was supposed to be picking up a little dumbo rex girl this weekend but that fell through, they never got back to me Very annoying!

Yep that's how I found your deviantART page Right now I have selfs but I have two Dalmatian females that I'm going to use to breed markings into my lines, ideally going for Dalmatian, variegated, and face-marked berks I have a litter coming up very soon if you're interested and that other person never gets back to you.

I'll talk to my friend about it! She just lost her heart rat who was from a breeder and his brother is slipping away now too but the 'breeder' wasn't so much interested in health than cool markings I guess. (Oscar was a BEW rex dumbo) She recognizes now that they probably weren't a good breeder. :\
I love self rats and how they have little colored toes! I had an american blue self dumbo rex rescue who I had to put to sleep in September. She was so loving right till the end but had a very weak immune system, she was sick her entire life with this and that.

Aww, that's too bad It' so unfortunate that they don't live very long, isn't it?

Luna-Ortis In reply to mistressjera [2010-01-09 21:57:31 +0000 UTC]
Yes it is! I lost my heart rat a few months ago too She was only 8 months old.
I talked to my friend and she's picky about standard coats, which I think is kinda silly
Are you planning to add rex coats into your rattery?

mistressjera In reply to Luna-Ortis [2010-01-10 00:24:50 +0000 UTC]
I'd like to have either rex or harley-coat or both fairly soon, unfortunately my rex stud passed away a few months ago and I never kept any rexes to carry on the line. Since it's dominant it's very easy to add back in, though, so hopefully soon!

I would LOVE a harley! What do you think of dwarves? I've already seen one in Canada! (well, at a show)
I'm down to one rex after Baloo passed, and he's almost two!

mistressjera In reply to Luna-Ortis [2010-01-11 06:05:45 +0000 UTC]
I haven't been much into the dwarves, it's always been my intent to make rats larger and not smaller I don't know much about them, though.

Luna-Ortis In reply to mistressjera [2010-01-11 06:21:58 +0000 UTC]
I think it's recessive and they are sooo cute. They stay the size of a 6-8 week old pup but with adult proportions and cute buggy eyes. It'd be nice to have some dwarf boys in the future for all the personality and less mess
I don't think they have any associated health problems either but I'm not sure. I tried to find a page all about them from a good breeder, but I can't find it now. :\ It'd be nice to have more varieties in Canada though! Most of my guys are rescues but I had to go to the states just to get my hairless from a breeder/rescue.
