Also, about this guy Sword, he's had numerous instances of suicidal depression. I've been talking to him a bit and his home life isn't good. His two older brothers are both complete assholes who pick on both him and his mom all the time. His mom's divorced and Sword gets in trouble if he's visibly unhappy. Plus she's gone all day at her job.

Hmm, that question is kind of hard to answer. I've been drawing stylized for a long time, and I can't really say how it developed. For me, character design just come from the impression I get of a character. Try to think abstractly and play with proportions.
Proportions are important to style and character design. Maybe all your characters could have big noses, ears, hands, and feet, but have skinny limbs and waists... Maybe they're all round and squat, or maybe they just have big heads. Maybe each ones of these is an example of a different character, or maybe they all look that way. Once you have kind of have an idea of proportions you specifically like for a style or a character, you can try to adapt different faces to match it and use basic shapes to play around with features. A simple line can be a nose, a mouth, or even eyes.
For examples for some of what I do in Memoria... Matty and Lucas have smooth, but basically triangular noses, while Harriet has a curving, pointy, kind of beak-like nose. She has excited looking cat-like eyes with thin eyebrows to match so I can easily give her fierce expressions. Matty has big round innocent eyes, with round caterpillar eyebrows, a round face, round glasses, and even round hair. In this case, they are the character their faces look like.
Basically, it's just all the little things that add up. Watch animation and look at different illustrators to see what they're doing and get ideas. Pull things from different people (but don't just copy someone's entire style directly) and build up something that's your own.
I hope that helps some, without being a lot of useless info. It's always good to start with things that you like and incorporate them...
