A, (for lack of a better word) “good” place to use profanities in poetry could be if you were describing or writing about something in a stylized, well crafted (both with words, ideas and structure) way about a setting and a profanity ended the piece in a twist or irony or as a key for materialism. For example, if I were to write a piece about two lovers and with the most gorgeous words available, express such luscious and tender feelings of devotion, loyalty and an endless love, only to end the piece with ‘good fuck’ or something to that extent. Still, this would have to be done very tastefully and even then it is a bit questionable, it was the only thing I could instantly think of as an example.
Otherwise, profanities could be used as a thoroughly thought out adjective, but only once. It would probably loose its tacky, reused verbal filth value after one instalment. You have to think about why people use profanities. Poetry is not a collection of angry or smutty words. Profanities in poetry are a hard to explain because realistically, poetry is that which is well structured and thought out. It is not prose so it does not say everything and thus, is not especially long (except with epics, etc). It (again, generally) aims to evoke a feeling, a thought, a sense of knowing, a question or a moment of clarity without the use of excessive words, therefore, each word should be picked out for its own specific reason and that is why poetry tends to lack profanities, simply because its more words than needed.
After all, what does fuck mean? What does shit mean? What do they refer to? Are they things or feelings or adjectives or what? Each word should stand on its own, in that perspective, it is the same as all creative writing. If it is not adding anything you probably do not need it. The fact of the matter is this: you need to read poetry to write poetry. To understand poetry you need to read poetry and to write better poetry, you need to read poetry. It is first and foremost, the most efficient way to improve, refine and understand your poetry.
