I use Apophysis 7X.
If you want to try it, you would suggest downloading Apophysis 2.02 [link] first as it has the auto-installer needed to make sure you have all the folders required for all the miscellaneous downloads that are out there for the program. Then, download the 7X version [link]
from Xyrus.
There are many tutorials, scripts (txt of the art piece) and gradient (color) packages here at Deviant that you could do nothing but download plugins for Apophysis for a whole day. Fractal Resources [link] is a good place to start as they are trying to put all fractal program resources in one place.
I hope this helps. I also hope you try it. Even if you end up not liking it, giving it a chance will help you understand it and better appreciate it. But then, you already know that.

Do a search for "apophysis tutorials". Both here and on the web you will find many. Obviously some will be for the advanced users, but there are beginner tuts out there. I think there might even be one on the original site for the Apophysis 2.0. Try there first, then try here at Deviantart.
