Aw, thank you so much for the compliment! Nergui and the Elite Huns (and Shan Yu) are my muse right now, so I'm working on the fanfics with my husband and have tons of artwork for it planned on

Your Tumblr blog is awesome. I love all the Mulan posts, especially the concept art and all the additional stuff I didn't know about the film. I've been meaning to follow you on there for a while, but I'm really shy so I barely make an approach first Heh, but I am now. ^^ Keep up the awesome work and the cool Tumblr posts

You're welcome, also I realized I forgot to thank you for the Llama I didn't think my amateur art would be so appreciated
Yes I have noticed you like the Elite Huns, I think it's great that they got some attention too as they're so underrated. Really, I'll be waiting for those fanfics and fan arts, I always wondered what happened to the Huns who survived

You too, if you haven't noticed I have reblogged your posts quite much, it's pretty hard to find anything Shan Yu/Huns related anywhere.
And I'm quite introvert and shy too, it's nice to finally actually meet you

MariposaBullet In reply to Ohanamaila [2015-03-16 01:23:20 +0000 UTC]

No problem! You capture the Disney/Mulan style perfectly from the characters drawings to the coloring style!

Yeah, Shan Yu and the Elite Huns are my favorite Disney characters (out of all the princesses, princes, and popular villain characters ), and since they're so underrated I decided to give them their own back stories up to what happens to the remaining 5 after the movie (decided to kind of portray them as the protagonists as if they are the heroes too). My husband and I are still kind of roughing out the fanfic and at our current timeline in the story, Shan Yu and the Huns haven't even reached China yet (where the movie actually takes place). There's bunch of additional OC's and adventures that takes place in Mongolia, but we're both having fun, so we're hoping to get the full fanfic up somewhere and then post bunch of artwork. Glad to know that you're interested! ^^

I've noticed you've reblogged my Mulan and Shan Yu/Huns related posts! Every time I saw your name in the notes, I thought to myself, "Oh cool, Marubien reblogged my post again! " Glad to know a fellow Mulan fan likes my posts too! I know you left a comment on one of my posts (I think it was the one with the concept art from the Special Edition Mulan DVD); I wanted to reply to that but back then I didn't know how to (Tumblr's set up a little weird... I couldn't figure out how I can respond to someone's comment or note and it took me a long time to finally get it to work decently). Yeah, so thank you! I hope you'll find my future posts entertaining too!

Thank you

Wow, sounds interesting. It kinda reminds me of chinese Mulan TV series where the enemy's background and motives were also shown and developed. Though there the enemies wasn't Huns but Rourans, although they look pretty similar.
Yes of course I'm interested

Oh I'm flattered  I'm not really that special or important, and I had the same feeling when I saw that you liked/reblogged my post. Yeah tumblr is quite weird sometimes, I'm not completely sure I still know how everything works.
Oh I definitely do, Mulan Special Collector’s Edition book was amazing, I'll probably reblog that if you don't mind

MariposaBullet In reply to Ohanamaila [2015-03-17 00:09:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I've heard of the Chinese Mulan TV series, but never got a chance to check it out. I've seen the live action Mulan movie from 2009 (Mulan: Rise of a Warrior) just this past summer; the antagonists were Rourans in that movie too It was a bit disappointing to see the Shan Yu character (Mendu) not do a whole lot other than sit back on a couch but it was still a good movie All the art I post on my DA page will be posted on my Tumblr page too, and when I find a good place to post the fanfics, links to them will be posted here and there too, so keep an eye out It might not be right right away, but I'm definitely planning on doing it (this is my major project that I want to do on my spare time ).

Oh yeah sure, please do! I'll be honored I got that book few weeks ago and planned on posting some of the pages and completely forgot about it until last night Glad you like it too

I have seen Rise of the Warrior too, but it was few years ago. They were Rourans too? Hmm, I didn't notice that when I watched it, interesting. I agree it was nice movie though I prefer the TV series.
I think I'd better put you on watch then

Thanks, you know for me who tries to find everything from internet and can't order stuff from online(at least yet) those scans were truly a treasure! Just like the Shan Yu concept arts, those are so beautiful

MariposaBullet In reply to Ohanamaila [2015-03-18 00:31:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they were Rourans too. I know the animated movie takes place during the Han Dynasty, and I think the original poem takes place during the Northern Wei Dynasty, so the enemies are different (I even read that the Huns weren't really around or trying to invade China during the Han Dynasty time period). I'm not a Centeral Asian historian (or historian period), so sometimes I seriously get confused on who the enemies are really supposed to be (Huns, Mongols, Rourans, or Xiongnus...) In Mulan 2 (which takes 1-2 month after the first film's storyline), the Emperor mentioned that the "Mongols" are planning an attack.... I think the Mongols started ruling approximately 1000 years AFTER the Huns, so up until this day I'm still confused . I read some information online, but those still kind of confuse me, so for me to really be able to understand their difference and their history, I might have to take a class specific to Centeral Asia or those nomadic tribes

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for the ! I'm really honored! Right now I'm trying to knock out a kiriban prize for a friend and after that I'm planning on finishing off a Genderbent Ursula image I started last summer, so once those two are done, I'm planning on drawing some character profile pics (starting from the main female characters, since females are easier to draw ) and some movie poster-like art with Shan Yu

Thanks! Glad you like those concept art posts I was pretty lucky to stumble across an Ebay auction of the Shan Yu and the falcon model sheet sets, and once I saw that, I was like "MUST GET THESE AND SHARE! "

Really, I always thought the movie was (mostly) based on Tang dynasty. That's what the directors said and it kinda fits. Though of course there's some mix of dynasties which makes it impossible to track down to one certain dynasty. Here's one article of Chinese culture in Mulan if you're interested camp-wuzhong.tumblr.com/post/4…
Yeah I'm not historian either, I made thesis about chinese inventions in high school but that's all.
I read somewhere that the enemies could have been Turkish too, it's really confusing. I don't think anything they said in the sequel is valid information, I don't even consider that fanfic movie as a canon. Like what on earth is Qui Kong? I have never heard of that kind of country, and how it could protect China from the Huns is mystery to me.
Yeah why they don't teach these things in history?

You're welcome, you deserve it
Yay can't wait

I'm glad you did, it cheered up my day when I saw them

In that Special Collector's Edition book that I just got, there's a section that has photos of in which the directors and producers took when they went to China to do research for the film. There's a photo of a porcelain figure with real fabric clothing and on there it says: "Reasearch into historical costuming, such as this dress from the Tang Dynasty, contributed an authentic look to the Mulan characters." I did see Tang Dynasty being mentioned there too, so that's when it first started confusing me about the time period. So the other day I looked up which time period Disney's film was based off of and it said Han Dynasty (although the information online like Wikipedia can't be 100% trusted) and that spun my head around I'll have to watch the behind the scene reels again with the directors and the producers because I actually forgot which time period they mentioned But when I read the stuff in the article you sent me, those historical facts does fit the Tang Dynasty period along with the contents in the movie.

In the movie, they made it sound like the Emperor just finished building the wall. The Great Wall of China opened up in 206 BC and the Han Dynasty was established during 206 BC - 220 AD, so I'm guessing that's the only reason why Han Dynasty was mentioned, but that's pretty early compared to the Tang Dynasty (618 AD – 907 AD) . Just makes me want to ask the people that worked on the film, "Wait... so what do you guys want to do here really? Is it the Han Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, or the Northern Wei Dynasty?" LOL And of course in the second movie, they somehow do a crazy time skip and now the Mongols are attacking (instead of the Huns/Xiongnus) -_- I heard that the second movie was directed by completely different team, but things mentioned are never consistent or accurate

I don't remember where, but I did read that the villains were actually Turkish (or Gokturks) too... I did a quick research on the Huns, Xiongnus, Rourans, and the Mongols and the corresponding time periods, so this scattered up puzzle pieces that I had in my head for the longest time might slowly be put together, but I'm still confused I might make a Tumblr post about it in the near future.
