The only son of Genma and Nodoka Saotome, Ranma was taken from his home by his father when 2 years old to begin a 13-14-year training trip to perfect his skills in the martial arts. Genma was only able to convince his wife to let them go by promising her to raise thier son as a man among men upon pain of death for both of them. He signed a pledge and had his infant son sign it via hand print. However Ranma remained ignorant of his pledge for years and did not learn of it until his mother resurfaced in his life and Genma prevented them from meeting face to face due to his curse. Later, near the end of the trip, Genma took Ranma to a training ground in China named Jusenkyo that few people used due to the springs being cursed. Falling into them would transform a person into whatever first fell into it and drowned. Not knowing this, and not having the patience to listen to the local guide, Genma attempted to train with Ranma atop the bamboo poles which jutted up out of the pools. When Ranma knocked Genma into Spring of 'Drowned' Panda, he was surprised to watch a panda emerge from the pond and leap onto one of the poles. Genma was able to hit Ranma into Spring of 'Drowned' Girl. Thus he turns into a female version of his original form when splashed with cold water, which is only reversible through contact with hot water.

i. perched upon a collapsing telephone pole, a2 surveyed the area, brilliant blue eyes flickering to and fro, taking in every ounce of her surroundings.
ii. this was new. there were no machines. i mean, there were machines, but they weren't trying to kill her. they weren't automatrons. they didn't have self-proclaimed "consciousness."
iii. and - were those humans ?
iv. suddenly, her perch was empty, and the android was darting on the ground, hiding amongst the foliage and trees, virtuous contract following her with ease, floating as if strapped to her back.
v. a2 suddenly came to a stop when she came upon a building - that wasn't really her intention, but it was looming, so she decided to check it out.

[I] Ranma was in his girl form, angry at this guy for trying to date her. She literally picked him up and took a stance.
"Your sister wants me dead, you want to date me, I can't take your family's bull crap! Now leave!"
[II] She actually tossed him a great distance, and smashed her head on a wall and leaned on it. She let out an upset groan.
"At this point in time some thing is bound to happen, it it that bastard ghost cat? Is Shampoo or going to chase me again? is Kodachi going to come after my life? I don't know or care. I just want a normal conversation with someone, and a normal day."
[III] She sighed and got up. Ranma sighed and dumped hot water on herself becoming a guy.
"My curse is both a blessing and a curse. It's annoying as all hell."
