Hey Opravdu, could you perhaps give me a hand?
Recently I wanted to learn how to draw a bit more bulky soldiers, you know, with tacticool vests, either long coats or bulky armor, with pipe bomb launchers and heavy duty armor + helmets. The thing is - I am having a hard time finding a good source of reference. I know that you are into drawing soldiers of every shape and form and thus the question arrives : what sources of reference could you possibly recommand? Is there any type of army or soldier unit that you find interesting / a valuable source of reference? Or perhaps there's a particular game / film / any other medium that you'd concider a good starting point?
I find it both interesting and benefitial to learn more about the subject before drawing it and I thought that you are really into that cup of tea. I would really appreciate if you could help me!

I'm a huge history buff so I figured out armor by studying soldier development over time, the 20th century was a huge innovation period for armor and lots of countries were trying different things. I always find it helpful to consider a soldiers role when designing their gear. For example shock troops will need heavy frontal armor and carry only gear for heavy but short assaults, grenades and ammo but no entrenching tools or camping gear. A marksman may want to stay as light as possible so perhaps they only wear a knee pad on their crouch position knee or a single elbow pad on their support arm for propping up the gun with the elbow on cover. Guards in FOB's will wear heavy gear since they are not required to move much but guards in rear bases may not since they are not in danger and may need to scramble in an attack due to being less on alert. Consider what you would want to bring to the field, and customization often occurs for veteran soldiers. Trench-coats are worn because they have lots of large pockets for carrying maps, extra ammo, food and are wind proof. Straps on a soldier for gear always need to be readily detachable on the body encase of an emergency. Ammo pouches should match the operators weapon and be in a good reaching position preferably with the weapon still pointed down range. And remember some guys wear shit just because it looks cool.
Go draw some soldiers my lad!

PS. I thought that, to return at least a bit of the favor, I could recommand you a simple programme I've recently found out about!
www.pureref.com/
I have no idea if you have heard of it or not, but it was made to create easy to do, customisable refboards. While Pinterest for example is a great tool on its own, this lil' gem comes in handy due to the small tweaks you can make to the pictures you put in there. You can rotate them, mirror them, resize them and such. The window itself can be turned into a mode that makes your mouse not interfere with it while being visible all the time so that you can have it over your programme without any accidental workflow interruptions.
It is also really easy to make a board - you just drag the pictures off the internet or your harddrive files straight onto the programme window.
I'm still experimenting with it and I haven't been using it for long, I do admit that, but I think it's worth recommanding, especially if you have just one monitor or just limited workspace in general. Give it a try if you haven't yet
(It is completely free to download if you wish, but if you want you can leave a tip of any ammount for the creators to further develop the software)

Outstanding gallery. Your style is both fine detailed and ethereal at the same time. Very surreal. I'm especially a sucker for your halo inspired work.

Thank you so much friend! The Halo series was one of my biggest inspirations growing up, and its where I fell in love with Marines. I deleted my old Halo art so by the gods I must make some new ones.
