You really should work at Nintendo with these Super Mario x Nintendo Switch art. This stuff is really nice.

Just viewed your latest Super Mario x Nintendo Switch drawings-- they look just like something Nintendo would officially put out! They're pretty good! It's certainly inspiring to me in a way, as I've been wanting to draw Mario characters in the "official" 2D style for years now, though I often see it as a hard task.

I've also viewed some of your graphic design works. They're pretty nice.

Keep up the good work regardless!

Thank you!

And you're right, getting the 2D style down pat is a hard task, sometimes even for Nintendo themselves as there are plenty of official Mario art pieces that go a bit off-model.

Flightx In reply to PepVerbsNouns [2017-01-15 08:50:44 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply! I am generally not active much on this site nowadays. You're welcome.

I see. I checked your Twitter account and it featured posts going in depth with the images. In order to create the images, you used the official 2D artworks for reference. Do you always have to use them for reference, or will one eventually learn it all at one point?

Also, by "off-model," do you mean specific parts of the image that don't line up with the character's actual design or 3D model? I apologize for these silly questions, as I want to learn a bit more about the process of creating these artworks. Thanks.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PepVerbsNouns In reply to Flightx [2017-01-15 09:03:25 +0000 UTC]

You eventually get used to drawing them over time, but that's with repeated work. And you're mostly right about the definition of "off-model". My idea of off-model can range from subtle differences where either proportions are wonky or the artist's own individual style peeks out too much, to flat out totally separate from the official design.

Ah, I see.

I usedΒ this series of posts Β you made on Twitter to create this example in Paint Tool SAI, as I don't have Clip Studio Paint installed:Β i.imgur.com/MtLRMW8.png

It's just a sketch, so of course, the final linework may end up being a bit more closer to the official artstyle, but as a firstl try, what do you think?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PepVerbsNouns In reply to Flightx [2017-01-17 02:36:09 +0000 UTC]

That looks very very close to official art. You've honestly got it down pat. Go for the final line art and see how it turns out, but so far it looks really good!

Looks fantastic so far!

Only thing I would suggest is make the differences in line weight a bit more noticeable if you're really going for accuracy, especially with his eyes, nose and around the outside of his head.Β s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/o…

Other than that, you've pulled it off really well.

Macromedia Flash 5 for the actual animation and Paint Tool SAI for some backgrounds and effects. I want Toon Boom, but I can't afford it right now. :\

I still need to read your comic properly but I wanted to tell you that the SJ page could really use an option to comment and maybe read earlier pages - I found the sites with volume one really uncomfortable to use. It's up to you of course but I thought you might want to know.

As it is now I'll probably end up reading it here on DA even though SJ is normally much more comfortable for long comics.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PepVerbsNouns In reply to Oly-RRR [2014-11-17 00:40:54 +0000 UTC]

Of course, thanks for the feedback! The new SJ site is currently undergoing a trial run and I was actually hoping to hear back from readers what they thought of the new look. By December, I hope to go over the site again and touch things up.

I believe I placed a chapter/page select drop-down list at the bottom of the page, as well as buttons to navigate back, forward and beginning to end of the series. But, besides the option to comment, what else would you recommend I do with the site to offer a more comfortable experience?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Oly-RRR In reply to PepVerbsNouns [2014-11-17 03:16:11 +0000 UTC]

I have a feeling people reading comics on SJ usually like comments as a quick and simple way to talk to the artist, even though SJ is less active comment-wise than DA. So I wouldn't expect many of them to contact you if it means going to some other site.

Here's there's other stuff I can think of:
- one page per upload (right now your uploads look like two separate pages under each other and it causes unnecessary scrolling, it would be easier to have two pages to click through that you upload on the same day)
- smaller header or no header (I have a decently sized screen and when I go to the site I don't even see the comic until I scroll, looking at other SJ comics can give you ideas about ideal header sizes)
- no news in the header (news typically stay on the front page or separate news page, if I am about to read through the entire chapter I probably don't want to see the message about it being available as an ebook over and over again).

You comic looks nice and I was surprised to see that you don't have any subscribed readers on SJ when I found it! I believe the current site design is the reason for it and I'm sure your comic deserves more readership. Basically, even a very default page (from one of the options SJ offers) is better than a site that looks too huge for a desktop screen, not to mention laptops and such.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

PepVerbsNouns In reply to Oly-RRR [2014-11-17 03:28:47 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, thought the lack of readership was from the comic itself.

I may be no stranger to writing and drawing, but I'm very new to the webcomic scene. I've heard a few people close to me say pretty much the same thing you are about the site, and I'll consider giving it an overhaul once the holiday season rolls around.Β Anyway, thanks a bunch, this is really helpful!

The only thing is, what do I do about the comics that I have that are already multiple pages? Do I delete them and re-upload them as separate pages?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Oly-RRR In reply to PepVerbsNouns [2014-11-17 04:26:51 +0000 UTC]

Nah, from what I've seen of your comic I think it's good! It could benefit from some colour or tones and I'm not ready to give any feedback on writing yet but I think it's good! And all kinds of comics (including comics I don't find any good) gather readership on SJ so if you have no readers at all and have been posting for over a week it's likely you're doing something wrong technically rather than art-wise or writing-wise.

Really I'd just throw some default SJ template as a temporary measure and then work on redesigning the page but it's up to you!

Similarly with pages - if I were in your shoes I'd definitely delete double pages and re-upload them separately (and while you do it your banner will show up on the front page unless you made the comic "invisible" in settings so hey, some exposure for your effort) but if you think it's too much work you can leave them be.
