You don't think you can put time, skill and effort into making a photo of yourself? I used to teach photography and a drawing class in college and that was one of the first assignments I gave my students. You wouldn't, by any chance, be one of those people who think photography is not art would you?

I worded that wrongly. Selfies that DO take time skill and effort, sure. I can appreciate that. But that's the .0001% of selfies on dA.

My boyfriend is a photographer, and in one of my comments on the original thread I said that existence itself is art. Everything is art, but not everything is art worth respect. Photography, if it's good, and skillful, yes, it's art.

Okay, I can accept that. Of course if you are capable of making distinctions of good and bad, and are competent to do so, then you can apply that to art as well as to anything else. Art can range from sublime to abysmally horrible. I differ from your opinion in one regard though: I think that most selfies were not really taken with the intention of being artistic though, and I believe that making art involves the intention of making art. Thus, selfies CAN be art, but not all of them are, and, in fact, most are not, and that is mostly due to lack of skill, lack of intent, lack of effort, the lack of willingness to invest the time it takes to do it well, and so on.

Personally, my own pet peeve is all of the really awful nudes on DA. Again, there are about one in ten thousand that are worthy of respect and only about one in a hundred are even good enough to bother with making -- and that crosses all genres (drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and etcetera). I have written several articles about that and have received a lot of support as well as a few responses from mentally stunted people who were obviously not interested in them as art.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I actually appreciate you taking the time to articulate the point and express your opinion, I'm simply a cunt. I argue that dA is so full of garbage already that selfies are just a portion of the tumor that is to be the downfall of this unfiltered platform. Uploading shitty Sonic doodles on lined paper is very similar to uploading selfies and calling it photography. 

As far as awful nudes, I concur. Although the more nudes, the better, for more reference material. 

Have you ever considered having a pen pal? Maybe via email? You seem smart and well-read and I wanna open my mind more about art and what it means to be an artist.

Thanks, I'm glad you like my drawings. As for how old I am, well let's just say I'm an adult who's too old for school, but way too young to retire.  
I live in Canada; southern Ontario in the Great Lakes region to be more exact. And I've tried lots of different mediums. I've worked with airbrushes, water colors, oil paints, ink washes, and charcoal to name a few; but most of the time I like drawing with pencils.

Acrylic paint is my steez. I'm always needing critiques on my work so if you throw me some advice I'd love to exchange wisdom back n forth! Frankly I don't know what I need to work on.

Did your cousin go to the U of Windsor or St. Claire College? 
I'm just the opposite. I like painting a bit, it's fun; but I love to draw, especially with a pencil.
Well I don't know if you saw them on my deviant page, but I've written quite a few critiques since I
joined this site. Critiques give me the chance to practice my writing skills; and I was also taught how
to write a critique in a creative writing class, so writing one occasionally gives me a chance to practice
that as well.

It depends- if I'm painting it better be finished and I need to spend a whole fuckload of time on one peice
Drawing is more willy nilly so I barely ever finish sketches
unless I'm doing art trades in which case I either draw or paint on paper

Two of my sisters went to the U of W to. 
There's nothing wrong with taking a while to finish a painting. It's better to work at a pace that's best for you, 
so you'll have a painting that you're really proud of instead of something you did quickly, but that you're disappointed with. 
Yeah I've got lots of drawings and sketches that aren't finished either. Some will never be finished; but some of the better
ones I'd like to get back to and finish eventually. 
Well if you want a critique on one of your paintings, put a critique request on it, let me know which one it is and
I'll let you know what I think. But if you just want a comment, I'll give you fairly detailed one as well.
