Hey, nice to meet you! I like your Dragon Age fan art and notice that you are also a scientist -- what do you do? I am currently working on a Ph.D. in the biology of aging.

Hi ! Thanks for the visit. I'm a cognitive psychologist with particular interest in mental processes and representations of memory. Getting a Ph.D. is a way of life, isn't it? Been there, done that but would do it again (but, perhaps under the guidance of a different advisor).Β

Happy to meet you! Cognitive psychology and the study of memory sounds quite interesting -- I have always been intrigued by how the mind works. Yes, I would agree about getting a Ph.D. -- not sure what I think about the process yet but then I am only in the middle of my second year. There have already been a lot of ups and downs, but I do like the research. If you don't mind me asking, what happened with your adviser?

He didn't treat some of his students and other faculty with the respect they deserved. He would often bash their work which I think, this set a bad example for impressionable students, such as myself. That said, however, he was an excellent teacher and researcher and provided me with multiple opportunities. So, in the end, I think I was luckier than most.Β

I agree, it's a poor practice. I've known some who do this and it both makes me uncomfortable and makes me wonder what they say about me when I'm not around...
At least you recognized this for what it was and took away a lot of good from the experience!

Hey Thalia -- I'm doing really well; as you may have noticed I have not been active on DA over the last several weeks. Pretty much getting ready for the holidays and such. How about you? What have you've been up to?

Hey Taliessyn
I've been working on getting ready for the holidays myself - not a whole lot of time in between it and Thanksgiving this year...!Β I've still been working on Phoenix Fire - it's been slow going, but I'm trying to keep up the pace.Β Almost reaching chapter 100!!Β I can't help but wonder if I wanna do something "Over the Top" special for it, or just keep going with the story without going off the path...Β I'll think of something
I sure miss seeing you and your beautiful artwork on DA

Aw, that's so sweet. I've been painting as much as I can but I don't usually post that kind of stuff on DA anymore since it doesn't scan or photograph well. I have a few pieces I'm sort of working on now -- it's just tough finding the time to finish something to post. I'm sure I'll get back into it again.
A hundred chapters is an amazing feat! I have to congratulate you on reaching such a milestone. Let me know if you want feedback on any of your "over the top" ideas One option is to provide alternate endings. Whatever you do, you have to get Casavir out of Luskan. Poor guy, he's been wasting away in prison for year. I'll never forgive the developers for that!

I'm sure you'll get back into the groove again someday, Talie
And thanks - I'm working on 99 right now, but I'm thinking ahead...
One idea I had was to make a slight reference to an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation - Thalia pulls a stunt similar to what Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) does in the show...only the ending of the chapter isn't as pleasant...(Spoilers: Cas leaves the keep for unknown reasons)
The second idea was that Neeshka - in an attempt to help Thalia "relax" takes her (and Solana by default) on a treasure hunt...only they end up dodging demons, traps, and the undead just to get to the prize in the end - something of a bonding chapter for the two of them.Β Which do you think works?

Purple-Taliesyn In reply to Thalia-Dawnbringer [2013-12-19 23:11:55 +0000 UTC]
I don't think I've been out of the groove, just working more on painting and charcoal; the pieces are too large to scan and I haven't had much success taking photos. Anyway, I am working on a pencil drawing now; I can usually get those to scan somewhat decently. I'll guess we'll see
I'm not familiar with the Star Trek episode you're referring to, but Captain Picard is one of my favorite Star Trek characters; anything he does is usually pretty cool. And Cas leaving the keep for unknown reasons? Oooh, the intrigue!!!! I like it!
A bonding moment between Thalia and Neeshka might be good and different, too. It could put either character in a slightly different perspective, making each of them more well-rounded than they already are. Still, I'm always partial to something with Casavir. Gosh, sorry I'm not much help!!!

Oh don't worry, I'm gonna bust Cas outta Luskan !!!Β That I SWEAR I will do 100% Β Lemme finish the first story first
The Star Trek episode I refer to is was Episode 10 of Season 3: The Defector - I won't spoil it, but I will say that Picard does something pretty awesome against the Romulans Β Oh, and I read somewhere that Simon Templeman - Loghain's voice actor - had a small part in that episode (not a Red-shirt, don't worry )...and he's married to one of the actresses who had a recurring role in the show!
I understand how you feel towards painting and charcoal - those can be big pieces of art...I've used them before, and not only can they make a huge mess, but sometimes you need to go big with them.Β But I'm sure you'll figure something out Β What is it about taking photos that you haven't had much success with (if you don't mind me asking?)?

I know I had written a reply to you but apparently, I hadn't sent it Anyway, forgive me if I repeat myself Β
I know you have plans to get Casavir out of Luskan; it's just that the poor guy has been waiting. I guess a few more years won't matter LOLΒ
I do love Simon Templeman's voice -- it's funny recognizing a character's voice when they do other characters. Simon Templeman voiced a character in Mass Effect and I half-expected Loghain to pop out of the space gear. Weird. Anyway, I'll have to check out that Star Trek episode.Β
With regards to photographing my work: I'm sure it's a matter of experimenting with lighting and my camera settings. Charcoal always comes out "rougher" which software (Painter, Adobe) cannot fix completely. Also, the values gets washed out, but I usually can fix that with a contrast boost. The reflections are too great on my oil paintings; I usually use a setting that eliminates this but the color does not look right or there is a "fuzziness" to the work.Β

That's all right
I know - I've been trying to get Phoenix Fire done as soon as I can...it's dragging a bit, and then there's Mask of the Betrayer, which will also take a while...unless I write it and the spin off side by side....
It sure is funny when you recognize a characters voice actor when they do other characters - dare I remind us about how I saw Cas' voice actor doing various villains on Courage the Cowardly Dog and playing Captain Hook?Β
Lighting is always an important thing with photography - too little light, and everything is blurry; too much you could have a glare/reflection.Β Sometimes you have to get the right angle in order for it to work, and then you have the computer to contend with.Β The other thing you need is the right focus in order to get the right depth you want.Β Photography looks easy, but it's not, believe me
