Thanks for the llama
I knew a llama once. At least I thought I knew him. I mean, how well can anyone really know anyone, much less a llama. With their air of mystery and thinly veiled contempt. It’s hard. But I digress.
His name was Kevin. But for reasons I will never understand, he would only ever answer to Albert. Identity issues aside, things started out okay. The usual introductory sniffing and sneezing went well, despite his allergies, but then things started going downhill during the ritual licking phase of the pleasantries. We pushed through. And had it not been for the spitting, we might have even been able to make it work, but alas, after just 3 seconds of bittersweet brotherhood, we finally decided to part ways. It’s kind of sad, when you think about it. Spitting seems like such an innocent thing to fight over, but he was pretty adamant that I should stop and that was just never going to happen. We might have overcome that issue, but Kevin, like all llamas, was very competitive. First came the stench competitions. Then it was belching contests. And lastly, a painstaking count to see which one was hairier. You can clearly see why our relationship was doomed. The poor fellow was a bit of a sore loser.
So he snuck out, taking with him a failed friendship, an obliviously optimistic dread of the future, and my sixth favorite toothbrush. Now that he is gone, I can honestly say, it's for the best. He was too much of a chick magnet anyway and who needs that poultry drama?
Full disclaimer, as Kevin’s official biographer, a position of which he blackmailed me into (don’t ask), I’ve been instructed to inform you about his ongoing series. The journey starts here with The Kevin Chronicles - Chapter 1, and this gallery contains the rest. You should check it out.
*End of cue card*
And don't worry, they're pretty short.
No pressure though, only if you want.

Gooodd afternoon Rookie!
I'm making my own map of Loonia, would it be okay to include your Hatchery Tree on the map?
I personally love the idea, and I know others like to add the Hatchery tree to their headcannons too, so I feel like it deserves to be on it. But I still wanted to ask you first!
Hope you're having a great day!

hello!
the tree was not really my idea, in fact Taikgwendo was the one to come up with the initial idea and OrangeSavannah and i went with it and the three of us built onto that base together. Taik's got some specific things in mind for the tree, especially location-wise since the placement has some thought behind it ^^ she's sadly not involved with the group anymore for reasons that bring Orange and i to the brink of leaving it as well, buut she said she'd be fine with it if you included it in your map. just get back to her and she'll tell you more

Oh I had no idea it was originally Taikgwendo's idea! I first heard about it by you. xD
I'll happily send a note over then, so she can give me some more information. (Also hopefully, the current spot I've chosen for the map is alright, or I'll have to shuffle some things around. )
I didn't know you and Orange were so unhappy with the group currently.
My I ask why?

she came up with the tree when she was working on the story for her small comic "Fallen".
Taik, Orange and i are all annoyed about the same things. for example the mods have become way too strict for our liking. they're making rules into laws.
why is it so damn important that on your application you use 100% white? why can't it just look white when seen with the other colors of the loon? why do loons have to have same hue colors down to a technical level? why can't you just eyeball this? it doesn't matter. i thought the mods were crazy when they announced they would colorpick that shit and dare you the hue is off by three points. i used to do everything in SAI and it messed up hues constantly, so suddenly my applications weren't accept it anymore until i'd fix it with PS. i miss words to express how unnessecary and dumb this is. it shouldn't matter for as long as your eyes cannot perceive a difference, geez. in the application you're not allowed to use a texture brush, you're not allowed to use a gradient, you cannot put a texture over it.
back when i joined, so pretty much day one that the group existed, i had a goddamn texture on my applications. i used grey instead of white because it looked white. i did them in SAI entirely and had the hues messed up. so? it made not a difference at all. the mods are taking this waaaay to serious for a group that's supposed to be "fun" and "encouraging people to draw and get better" and "be creative". if i was to hear of this group nowadays with the premiss of "a fun group with a creative species to encourage bettering your art" and i would then be bombarded with those petty laws of creation, i would seriously skip it because that already is everything but fun and creative.
another slap to the face, which also falls into the "rules made laws" category was when Orange drew a picture of Ams and Asp and she didn't get full LM for Ams because half her back leg wasn't on the canvas. it is so dumb how it's okay for a tree to obscure half your loon and it's fine but dare you not having half your loon off the canvas because you didn't draw the other half of the loon either way. sounds like one of the mods has an obsession with object permanence which is not a real thing in 2D art -.-
next point is that it's ... well it's not that we look down on artists who aren't that good at drawing yet and we love gift art regardless of skill, but honestly this group is for children. like, how does that sound that everything is magic. babies are made magically. evoloons are made from magic. the currency is something with magic. i am so glad the group allows gore, otherwise it would be truly dull and just a happy rainbow place where no menace of the real world applies.
there's a handful of artists who've already aquired a certain skill and are a little older, but the majority seems to be pretty young. aand the group is just not made to appeal to older and better artists. look at Esks. their group is also some-arpg and you can uprade your character a bit with points you earn by drawing, the group also was made to encourage people to work on their art and get better, and there are considerably many good artists there but also a lot of young/less skilled ones. why? because the founder of the group actually made it look good. there is pretty art on the front page, it doesn't bombard you with links, everything is esthetically pleasing. then you look at evoloons and it looks like a mix of a children's color book and the index of a law book. the front page is absolutely content overload, too many links, the creation of loons has become so specific and nitpicky that if i would be even more annoyed and weary if i was new to the group. idk if there are more who are bothered by this, but many just seem to be such, excuse me for losing my shit, sheep that they probably don't even notice how ridiculous this is. they just go through it without giving it another thought, going through this literal checklist of "are the ears the right abount of round and the right size, do i have all the white markings, have i made sure that they're really pure white, do i have too many fawn spots or are they too big or too small, is their pattern already too complex, did i think of the six horizontal only nostrils, do the colors have the same hues but do the eyes have different hues, are there patches too small to not be a marking but oh there is this exception with the toes, are the patterns too complex, do my markings touch the face" and so on and so on. it's exhausting. then you get to other groups and they're like "your character can have any three natural colors so long as there are stripes in some form" or "here are six pictures of traits your character can have, choose three".
i know i've gone back to the rules to laws thing ...
next thing, it annoys me that it's "fair" but unfair at the same time that people always get the same amount of magic. the group is supposed to encourage you to better your art?
splat down a ten minute drawing, for as long as it has some resemblence of a background, the colors are kinda within the lines and there are a few blobs of darker color to imply shading - 6LM.
then you're someone who really sat down, tried to get the anatomy right, be brave and try a new perspective, read up on color theory for this one and tried to make it look right, tried to use reference to make a background that actually has depth and details and made sure to include that bounce light and all the shit that would nudge you towards making better art in the future - 6LM.
it does not reward any change in effort. just like the creation you get a checklist of "if you have color then this much, if you have shading add this much, if visibility is down then minus this much". it's not fair to someone who makes an effort, it's just convenient for the mods to big brother everything better.
i already suggested to make a more free magic system where you can give yourself a set amount for normal or quick drawings, but you can give yourself a raise if you yourself think you've outdone yourself or you feel especially proud about how a certain thing in this picture came out. the answer was something like "we're not planning on changing the magic system" which to me translates to "hurpa durpa too complicated for us to keep an eye on".
with all this i begin to think that i just imagined reading the "encourage artists to get better" somewhere because nothing in the group actually points towards that. maybe it isn't written anywhere afterall and that argument of mine is actually useless. eh i actually just checked and i didn't find that premiss. maybe it was a thing from the starting days, idk.
anyway, drawing your loons in a side view in the same damn pose with what looks like traced lines over and over and over again still gives you as much magic as making a turnaround of your loon.
there are just so many things that annoy us as an older audience. sounds entitled i know, but it's annoying and discouraging if you with your skills get the same rewards as someone who just picked up a paper and pencil for the first time. it's superb for them, no question.
but all this combined, sandwiching evoloons between work/university and sleep just doesn't hold up on the fun-scale as other things do. it's just not as valuable because it's not that fun to us anymore with all of the above.
i'm sorry for the long text, but you asked and it feels good to get this out every now and then

Ugh, I totally understand the pain of making Evoloons. And I agree, it shouldn't be so strict. The same change to strictness drove my friend away froom the group as well. He was around since the group was formed and was ran by Griff. You'd think stuff like that would be a que that it's being changes for the worse.
From what I've heard from Stygma though. The mods aren't cohesive with each other, and right now tons of mods have just disappeared or are not active in the group. Poor Stygma feels like she alone is trying to keep the group running and active.
"Orange drew a picture of Ams and Asp and she didn't get full LM for Ams because half her back leg wasn't on the canvas" I've been told something similar, and I followed up to the group about it. The mod was wrong, and didn't end up apologizing for it- the other mods apologized for the nuisance. There doesn't seem to be a good set of rules in place for mods to follow... like, simple guidelines would solve that problem.
"excuse me for losing my shit" Honestly, I'm happy to hear about your dislikes of the group. I still hope to become a mod, and want to really puch the group in a better direction- like adding lore and quests, and guidelines, and this helps note things that I too want to see change. Like, I agree with everything you've said so far. And sometimes you just need a good vent too.
The magic system is a huge problem for me, I've even suggested a change for it. It just doesn't feel worth it. Most of the time, I just draw loons to draw, the reason I came into the group is it offered a perfect place to practice my nature backgrounds, but for the times I actually require magic- it just feels like grinding. And I completely agree, the current system encourages poor art.
I'm more than happy to lend an ear for you aswell, and like I mentioned before- It's good to hear. I'm still waiting and waiting to become a mod, but there hasn't been any opening, and it's hard to sit idle when I am positive I can help organize the group. Like- Organizing is my thing, I have ideas that could help, and I'm alreaady trying to be active as I can be for the group- just give me a chance. ==''
I'd be more than willing to go to Griff herself and ask permission to overhaul the evoloons. For example, companions must have something bird about them, as Griff requested when leaving the group .... almost three years ago now. She could be more than open to change, but I don't think anyone's asked her. And of course, I understand respecting the species to her original state she left them, as she was the creator after all, but the group is still growing in population- why not let the group grow along with anyone?

Rookie141 In reply to rascal4488 [2018-11-27 13:00:43 +0000 UTC]
ofc i can't be sure of your claims with being good at organizing, but the fact that you recognize things like this wrong with the group already qualify you for being a mod. i am glad that we're not just crazy and others see the same problems the group has.
i'll vote for you ouo)b
i honestly would also like to be a mod, but at the current balance my life is at i wouldn't have the time or nerve to invest even more time into evoloons beside me drawing for it. maybe if i was still in school or had a job that doesn't give me homework i would do that, but university is something different entirely xD
i would argue that as of now the magic system is the biggest problem actually, exactly because of the grind. i like the idea of drawing for upgrades, but honestly i don't know what works better without either making all upgrades really easy and quick to get or have the system break down entirely. exept for the option to reward yourself a little more to at least get the personal feeling of a reward for something you especially like.
contacting Griff about it would probably be the smartest thing. maybe briefly explain the problems the group has and the solutions you've got and ask for her approval. that'll have much more leverage on the current high mods.
hey, since the mod thing could take a while, i've had this idea of making a community height chart where everyone can submit their loon to be added onto it. would you like raise that project with me?
i've had two rules for submissions in mind so far: loons have to be in 3/4 view (sideview would be too space-consuming and overlapping wouldn't look that good) (we could maybe provide some simplified lineart for artists who don't feel comfortable with that view to give them a reference to trace/build onto/reference off of) and loons have to already be evolved some and have reached their final height, or even be fully finished. no loonlings, no unupgraded loons. and then when the applications have died down the chart could be opened regularly so updates to loons can be made (if they have gotten upgrades or something has changed) plus new loons can be added.
very big loons can easily be added into the background and really small loons can go in front of everyone, but generally it would be side by side, actually like the height chart you made recently.
that would be the idea so far. it's really just that, i don't have worked on anything yet.

I understand you there! When a mod position first opened up, my job at the time dind't allow any spare time for me becoming a mod xP
And now that I have the time, I must wait. At least I can do somethings to help the group without being a mod!
And I completely agree with the magic system. I've been brainstorming ideas for a revamp for awhile and even submitted one. I think I have a new and better idea I've been figuring out though, maybe you'd be willing to give me some feedback on it? It's in rather rough notes right now though, so pardon that xD
Choose a number that best represents your overall effort and pride of the picture. (Example, inbetween 1 and 10) That number is the Love Magic you earned (for each character involved).
-Choose from 1-10 if it’s lined and coloured, or has shading with no background.
-Choose from 1-20 if it’s a picture with a background, a short comic (3 panels or less), or if it’s an animation between 1-9 frames.
-Choose from 1-30 if it’s a comic (4 panels or more), if it’s a 3D figure (Physical or Digital), or if it’s an animation with at least 10 frames.
Some upgrades would need to have their magic raised to avoid to becoming too easy.
I've also been mulling over the idea for Love magic to pool (and be spent) like Gift Magic but there's quite a few pros and cons that come with that.
With some of the changes that I would want to suggest, I for sure would need to contact Griff first. Like Companions must be a bird-hybrid... I want that changed or gone XD I love birds as much as the next person but I'm getting a little tried of all these bird-hybirds. Even if it was a new hybrid for a bit, that'd be great.
And that's a good idea. Once I collect enough ideas that have been thoroughly thought out, perhaps I'll just go to Griff and send a note.
I really like that idea! It would be a very neat way to showcase the variety of sizes when it comes to Evoloons. I'd be happy to lend a hand to help out, but I'm not sure how lol.You can give me tasks if you know how I could help. xD
You would also have to decide things such as how the characters would be presented; Silhouette with a name on it? Flat colour? Shaded?
Also just to clarify, it sounds like other people just just give you a 3/4 view of their Evoloon in which you could add it to the chart? Because that's also a very smart idea! It would be a hassle if you wanted to draw each loon that wanted in.
With that being the case, you'd also have to make sure the pictures had a translucent/ invisible background.
This might be something you could try recommending to the mods aswell- weather you have luck with that or not, I would be doubtful, but it's still something that sounds like a great community idea.
