Hey there ... I'm Shannon. Or more commonly known as Shay so feel free to refer to me as that. This is just my little corner of the dA world. I most draw horses since I am an avid member of the HA-RPG but I am looking to expand my art to human stuff to. But that's not happening to well since I can't draw people very well.Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay and look around my small (imaginary) stables.

nightsrunner.deviantart.com/ar⦠because of the filtering and deep, rich colors; another "too lazy for BGs" but the colors go well with the picture and instead of just slopping down something halfhearted they went for the "er it's out of focus" effect and they went really heavy on the dark colors, so the stuff they didn't particularly care to draw is hard to see and harder to tell they slacked off on it

Colors and lighting makes a huge difference in all pictures, whether they're realistic or cartoon or super-perfect or just whatever.Β The lines make a big difference, too.Β You can customize your art and make it more personalized by using color schemes or lighting schemes ( all your art is always blue-white-gold icy/heavenly colors, or you usually draw dark stuff with dramatic shadows, etc ) or by playing with the lines like making them part of the shadows, or colored lineart, etc.
I just wish you could see there's a lot more in the picture than just perfect anatomy, that everything together is all important at the same time.Β If the background and lighting and colors are stunning, people don't really notice that a leg muscle isn't quite right.

I'm not too sure about that style. I do like the background but I don't know about the pony.

I actually kinda suck with colours to, which is why I greyscale. I don't need to think about them until after the shading has been done. I need to learn how to use filters and stuff. And look into adding little extra things.

On the second one from the bottom, the storybook thing, the actual horse itself does look pretty odd but I was commenting on the general style.Β You can change the anatomy but still do colors/lines like that instead of realistic shading.Β I was trying to find a wide variety of styles rather than just sending things I liked personally.Β My personal favorites were the ones with cool backgrounds and dramatic lighting, but I know that's not what you're personally looking for in your own art, so I didn't bother with posting those.
Someone did a great pencil drawing of a Pegasus, and I noticed it seems their whole gallery is all B/W pencil sketches.Β I didn't send it because it was just a "really good" horse with wings and there was nothing really all that inspiring about the picture except just "omg they're really good." The main thing I liked was the amount of detail, how they drew in every single feather and so on.Β Using no color at all is still a color scheme, it's fine to do totally black-and-white images.Β It sort of stands out when most things on dA have color and then you see a gallery of all pencil sketches.
What matters is the time and attention.Β Instead of just "the grass is green, they sky is blue, the fence is white" it looks better when you get creative with the colors.Β But it's fine to have a background that's all black and white, too.Β I had a book once as a kid that was called Blaze and the Forest Fire and the pictures were pencil drawings.Β I liked it because I could tell it was done with a pencil, and I thought, "well I have pencils, I could do this."Β I didn't care much about fancy paintings because I didn't have any paint.
To do the crosshatch shading on a full picture, you just shade all the background objects in the same way you shaded the horse.Β It takes a long time, but time is what makes pictures nice.Β You can greyscale the entire picture like they did in that book.Β It's tricky to draw without color information to separate objects so it's a whole other kind of drawing, but it still looks nice.
Instead of greyscale, you can use a color, like you did on that red one there.Β Pick a color that matches the feeling of the drawing.Β Red is a fiery, angry color, "So made you see red", it's the color of blood and rage, etc.Β Every color creates its own mood and feeling and you can use that to add a little something to a b/w drawing.Β Usually you just start with cool/warm colors at first.Β Pink is love and tenderness, blue is usually associated with sadness, pastels are bright and cheery, dark colors are more serious and refined, neon colors on black is just its own genre altogether and with digital it's easy to switch line/background colors after you're finished, and also easy to crop the background into a shape or splatter or something else that compliments the picture.Β For example, the drawing is a foal curled up on the ground and nothing else, it's in a really sleepy, cute, sweet pose; the lines are in soft purple (even if it was drawn in black, you can change the color after you draw it); the background is set to a soft low-saturation shade of pink so the lines show up well and the bg color doesn't distract you from the drawing, it's really muted out and quiet; and the background is cropped into a heart with the rest left transparent, maybe with a stroke outline added with the same shade of purple that was used for the lines.Β Another example is a stallion bucking dramatically with its mane flying everywhere and tail all splayed out, just the horse in full motion and maybe a cool angle and nothing else; the lines are changed to bold red; the background color is changed to flat black, a few shades above pure absolute black; the background is cropped into that jagged pointy bubble shape with the points everywhere, or a "shattered glass" kind of shape; possibly a red outline to match the drawing and the rest transparent.Β Can you visualize how the colors and background shapes add a lot more to the pictures than just the lines alone?Β All you actually drew was the horses, and the digital program pretty much does the rest for you but it still adds a lot of feeling when you're careful about the colors and shapes you choose.
Or you can just draw everything in the background like you did the horse, shade the walls and ground and buckets and halters and whatever is in the picture all in the greyscale crosshatch thing, then color them later.Β I think it's a great style to work on, having everything shaded like it's a drawing instead of going for photo-realism or cookie-cutter anime style where the lines are perfectly flawlessly smooth and the color is just a step away from cell-shading.Β You could keep flat solid color underneath so the main attention is on the lines and crosshatching.Β Simple are looks wonderful, lazy art looks bad.Β You can keep it simple while still making it simple on purpose and not just slacking off.
I think your crosshatchy horses look really cool.Β Even if you do perfect anatomy, it still has a style of its own.

Ahhhh well fair enough. I do like shading though, well sometimes when I can actually get it to look right aha. Cool backgrounds and dramatic lighting is stuff I can't do aha. I've tried but nah, not me.
Well fair enough. Sometimes you do look at an image and all you can thing is 'well, that is really well drawn' nothing else. Like idk. I do like the whole black and white images. Idk, they look really pretty to me because they are like simple but like still nice to look at. Sometimes colour is too much.
Colours scare me. Like i'm scared of going over the top and making it just look so horrible. So i'm a little reserved with my art because of my art. And that sounds pretty awesome, like it kinda inspired you in a way to try and do what they had done. Which is awesome.
I'm not sure if crosshatching the full picture would look okay. I guess I should really just try and not be scared of making something horrible. You learn from mistakes in a way and learn not to do what ever you did again but it's still like spending hours on something for it to turn out horrible is just ugggghhh.
Ahhhhh I wasn't meaning that with the colour. I always sketch with a different colour so it's easy for me to line later on. But I guess that does make sense, I like the idea of having a black and white image with like just one other colour to show the over all feel of the image. Here ... I wear all black and I have bright neon pink hair, I am one of them aha. But I do get what you mean with the background adding to the feel of the image though.
I might actually do that in the next piece just shade everything greyscale and cross hatched and see what happens. I guess I should embrace the fact that I actually like doing the cross hatchy thing and well I haven't really seen anyone else doing anything like that. And it's something I could actually work on.
But I disappeared again. I work a lot with bands which is annoying.

It might help you to remember... you don't HAVE to upload every single thing you draw.Β If something turns out terrible, just throw it away. 
I've seen drawings done entirely in crosshatch before.Β I think HARPG makes people forget there is art in the world besides horses.
Greyscale and b/w art is pretty popular.Β The color splash thing is popular too, where people convert a photo to black and white all except for someone's shirt or something and just that one thing is colored.Β You can try that with like, a greyscale horse with a colored halter, or a colored horse on a greyscale bg.Β You can play around with all kinds of stuff that the rest of the world loves but the horse community forgets about.Β Sometimes when you do that, your art is appreciated by people outside the community.

I guess that is true. I kinda forget that sometimes, but I guess it's nice just to doodle about and play with things. And if works, great, if it doesn't remember what you did and never do it again.
I haven't. And that makes me sad. It is quite easy to just get trapped in the sort of HA-RPG world in a sense and forget that there is so many other forms of art to.
Yeah I like the colour splash thing, I shall be sure to try that out at some point and she what happens. Cross hatching really is something I want to work on as a style though because it's something I actually like doing and it's different. I like being different. I don't even think I have any watchers that aren't in HA-RPG which is kinda sad in a sense but then it isn't because why would anyone else watch a purely horse driven artist with their own stable that isn't really different. Oh well. I have a full summer a head of me where I can work on my art when I'm in my own house.
