Hi! is it okay if I'm asking you for help? I'm doing an animation project right now about ocean in cartoon style. So I already made the ocean with toon shader in maya, but I dunno how to add some splash there if there's a boat. All i found is to make the splash in realistic style but I can't find the one in toon shader. I hope you're still active in here D:

I'm honestly not sure.  Whenever I have had to work with fluids I have used RealFlow.  If you can create a realistic splash in Maya can't you just assign the toon shader to the geometry used in the realistic splash?

Silence-x-Music In reply to Shikijiyu [2014-02-02 09:13:17 +0000 UTC]

ah yes.. because basically the splash it self is created by the shader. but i changed the plan to the ordinary ocean shader instead of toon anyway. thanks! btw.. if i used ocean wake examples from visor, do you know how to add the splash onto it? because all it have is the simulation and wake. is it possible?

Hi, I'd like to use your BR Jungle image in the background of a personal project (i.e. non-commercial). Would that be ok with you? Have tried sending you a note last week but perhaps you no longer check those because I haven't heard anything.

Sorry, I'm hardly on here.  Consider this granted permission for your non-commercial work, if you are still interested.

Hey, I'm wondering if I can use your hi-res wine glass picture for a website building assignment that's due tomorrow. The business I have do make the website about is a winery, and this would make a great background!!

how did your first semester at AAU go?

Shikijiyu In reply to Ninjerina [2010-01-11 15:19:32 +0000 UTC]

Good. Got a couple As and a B. It was a lot of work, but I pretty much survived intact. I don't like the fact that my professors seemed to mostly grade me on a whim. In my drawing class in particular, my grades seemed downright random most of the time...

What about you? How's life?

Ninjerina In reply to Shikijiyu [2010-01-12 06:35:44 +0000 UTC]

I know what you're saying about the teachers, well at least some of them. I think online there is more of a prevalency of that because they have to grade all their on campus students and then when they find time they grade online people. I had two really good online teachers but it took for-ever to hear back from my computer animation production teacher, which really really sucked because that one as you know there is so much that can go wrong. It stinks too that the teachers grade on subjective criteria. One teacher's a is another's b. But as I've been reassured its not what your grades are but how good of a portfolio you have at the end.

I'm taking 2 on campus classes this semester and they're charging me a bunch of b.s. lab fees so i'm hoping the extra 585 dollars to attend on campus ($400 lab fee for maya 1 wtf?! shenanigans!) is worth it! got any projects you're going to do over break? I've been meaning to start on something...

My employer didn't get their act together in time to pay for me to go to school this semester... So I am officially on a semester long leave of absence until I can continue in the Summer. I got to chat with your BF the other day. He seems like a really cool guy.

Yeah when i saw you guys talked I was like "wha?" but then I realized it was on the computer. For some reason I first thought it was at school then I remembere you took online only classes. I showed him the "happy flyer" you cg modeled for me and he agreed it would make a good stuffed animal

man i hope you can make a vid tut for the toon shader many ppl are trying to find out how and not use mental ray - i find yours easy but im kinda confused at the clamp node part XD

Nawledge In reply to Nawledge [2009-06-26 16:02:08 +0000 UTC]

i finnaly got it working
one thing though, how do i apply texture image with the shader?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shikijiyu In reply to Nawledge [2009-06-30 16:06:49 +0000 UTC]

Hey - sorry for the delay. I looked back at that tutorial and realized that I am doing some things fairly goofy. The clamp node can be confusing. The surface luminance output is a single number. But the clamp expects a vector input, which is THREE numbers (in this case, representing red, green and blue inputs). So that's why you have to connect the out value to a inputR (although you could just as easily use inputG or inputB). The clamp performs its operation on that input, and then you take the outputR and send it wherever you want it to go (to drive the ramp UVs in this case).

The thing I realized is that the multiplication step is unnecessary. It has the drawback of only allowing dark outline colors (which sucks). I'm actually in the process of rewriting it, because there are some other aspects that I found out that can ALSO make the entire thing much cooler. I'll let you know when it is done.

Nawledge In reply to Shikijiyu [2009-06-30 16:14:56 +0000 UTC]

XD i got it working anyways, the thing is i cant figure out how to put texture on the custom toon shade XD im not that very familiar with nodes yet since im used to UV mapping also im new at using maya still learning stuff, and i wanted to try out new things, im very impressed by the way you used your toon shader, i got motivated and started learning more

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shikijiyu In reply to Nawledge [2009-06-30 17:47:52 +0000 UTC]

Cool - since your model is UV mapped, that is no problem. Presumably, if you did something similar to the tutorial, then you are using a ramp to control the color, based on the incoming light source. If you select one of the colors in the ramp, you can click the little icon to the right of the color swatch rectangle to bring up the texture chooser window. From there you just select "image file" or whatever it is and plug in your texture location (the same way as if you were assigning a texture to the color channel of a lambert or something).

Does that make sense?

i havent tried that yet, surely i will later, this seems easier than adding things in the graph network
