# About me
My blog: analecte.wordpress.com/"Art works like fairies in tales: if you want the absolute, you shall have it, but only in disguise. By contrast, the truth of discursive knowledge, while undisguised, is unattainable. Works of art are less subjective than discursive knowledge precisely because they offer the subject greater freedom. Kant was absolutely right in subordinating them to a concept of teleology which was higher than understanding. According to Kant's theory, human beings are cut off from the in-itself by a kind of block. Now it is this block which in works of art shapes the in-itself into enigmatic figures. It is especially when they are blocked that art works represent images of being-in-itself. Ultimately art's enigma may even be the repository for the enigmatic quality of real life, to the blandly unmysterious essence of which art seems so radically opposed. Maybe art is enigmatic because it takes on phenomenal appearence, pretending it has solved the riddle of real life which in its native realm has been consigned to ossification and oblivion. To the degree to which man has spun a conceptual network around everything outside his subjective spirit, he has lost the sense of wonder in the presence of the other. Weak as it may be, art seems to correct this tendency. By its very nature it still instils wonder into human beings, just as philosophy was supposed to instill wonder, according to Plato, never mind the fact that it decided otherwise."
Theodor Adorno, Aesthetic Theory
