Your paper sculptures have much potential. Your drawings are incredible, you have some mad drawing skills. I also like the gestural marks in your paintings. Nice work!

Thank you! I'm trying to make more time for myself to just make more sculptures but most of my time is being eaten up by not-as-immediately-gratifying activities.

I know what you mean. Being an artist doesn't mean you can spend all your time making art. You have to go out and socialize. Meet other artist, art collectors, and people in order to get known. I think that is one of the hardest thing for an artist who is emerging.

hiiiii~ C: its been a while since i've asked you for advice ^^ i've been working hard at my portfolio and i think i'm about halfway? lol (i keep starting and scrapping a lot of works OnO;
anyway, do you mind telling me about how YOU feel about risd on a more personal level? things like is there a sense of community? what's fun to do around the area? this is a trival matter, but i'm sad that there's not much of a party scene over here at providence ><;; hehe
its snowing right now right? C: ahh i love snow~
oh and a little something that happened C: CCA came to our school and had portfolio reviews. i met with the rep (IN MY COSPLAY FOR HALLOWEEN LOL). she took 5 minutes to look over my works and said suddenly "i'm approving your admission" LOL guess i got my safety down early? ><'' i dont know much about cca....~

Lol! Well I'm glad that the reason you've been gone for so long is because of your portfolio!
Hm. Well, my freshman year was the time of my life. I can't say the same for everyone and I know I was very lucky but I had teacher who I really admired, a roommate, dorm-mate and friends who I love a-lot, fun projects etc. I was able to get into extracurricular clubs and take on high ranking roles (which has become one of my priorities).
Especially in the first 2-3 weeks when you are meeting with people, its fun as fuck because you can literally jump from table to table in the cafateria and everyone around will be someone you know. Also everyone around is kinda/sorta into the same stuff or know about the same stuff as you do. There is definately a pride for RISD in all students here, however there is not so much a sense of school community if thats what you're asking. Social communities - there are going to be some students who lock themselves up in their rooms and work all day all night however that number is small so you don't really have to worry about a ghost town. And sometimes don't worry about there being too much work to hang out with friends. Actually you should worry about that, however working on your homework together in a workroom or studio is pretty much like hanging out.
RISD is a pretty small campus, its pretty darn social for the learning scene.
I have complaints about second year in architecture, not so much the other majors, though.
Fun to do around the area? (lolwhuttime - sorry being cynical) Providence is a tiny, tiny place with one decent mall, a REALLY big outlet mall a drive away and other than that theres not much. If you learn how to use the busses though, you're literally 5 minuets from some of the best restraints in America. Other than that - not much to do. Though personally I don't leave the RISD bubble so its never bothered me. Personally.
Hm. I don't know about you but 'I' think there's a pretty big party scene going on here and RISD. Students here work hard (most of them) and party hard (or harder). Being 2 minuites from Brown doesn't help. As long as you're updated on the news, there are many parties available to you. The only school organized thing is the Artist Ball which is kinda wacky and fun. Brown students party from Thursdays to Saturdays and RISD parties are Fridays and Saturdays. As I said before, RISD students crash Brown parties all the time. ALL THE TIME.
Personally I don't party, but my lovely roommate is a hardcore partier so thats as much information as I know. And the korean parties are really good.
Snow this year sucks. Last year was better (sigh)
About your acceptance to CCA - congratulations on that quick reply from the advisor. I'm sure you must be doing things right in your portfolio in that case. I've also heard stuff about the Portfolio Day thing for RISD - I didn't go myself but I don't think you should bother. Alot of people got in, whom were told by the advisors they had no chance.
good luck, keep working!

heehee~ do you like walking up and down college hill? :3 i'm imagining myself lugging canvases/paints and stuff up and down and i already feel tired XD

walking up and down isn't exactly fun. It's tiring to the extreme especially on drawing days where the material is heavy.
Maybe the portfolio review person was having a hangover - -
10 points won't make a difference >.>
No problem! I love helping out. I should hope that if our advisors arn't doing good jobs that I do it instead.

Silreen In reply to cookiechle726 [2011-08-26 17:24:56 +0000 UTC]
sure thing. My advice would be to firstly start early on the drawings - if you're not physically drawing them at least start thinking about how you're going to approach those home test drawings. Don't be afraid to start these drawings again. Don't be afraid with your artwork.
Remember that your portfolio consists of both the drawings AND your portfolio, so if you want to show off you drawing abilities you can do that in the home tests and I don't think you need to have it be a focus of your portfolio.
You don't necessarily have to put major-related work in your portfolio (unless you've mentioned it in your statement alot, then you need to show some sort of reference).
Your portfolio's priorities should be 1) your best work 2) your favorite work 3) work which shows your potential of creativity.
The most important thing is probably 3) and 'finished' works wont necessarily be those which show your artistic individuality so keep that in mind.
You can worry about your grades, but you should worry more about your portfolio.
Early admission doesn't help you that much.
Try pre-college so you really know the school in depth it will help you make your decision and your essay because you know what you're getting into.
Anime is usually not an acceptable outlet for art. It's undiscussed but I think you should understand why - anime styled drawings are a STYLE. And remember that if you're following those rules, you're not expressing your own artistic flair. Unless you can take that style, rip it to shreds and put it back together in your own format avoid using a generic anime type of drawing for the portfolio.
Please keep asking me questions! It confirms my usefulness.

i totally agree about the anime part >< it may seem like i do a lot of it on dA, but i'm staying away from it ><'
i did pre college at sva this summer :/ (kinda wish i did it at risd), but i guess it helped too
i know risd is big on techinical art right? would it be ok if i had like some that were showing traditional/technical skills, and like the other half with my design stuff? what do you think ><
how should i pace myself with my portfolio? (creating it i mean). i have a very demanding schedule of classes D: (4 ibs and 1 ap/ not to mention studying for sat). or you can just tell me how you did it ^^ ~~~
thank so much ;u; hahaha OTL (im a senior this year and risd is my top choice ><'' argle...i have my doubts about in getting in, but it can't hurt to try right?)

I was looking at your work, and the one piece which an oil piece definitely shows you have the skills to get in if you keep that level of quality (not concept though!) consistent, so don't worry!
RISD - SVA, doesn't matter where you did it. If you had a great time, that's all that really matters. Do you live in america? if so check out the campus on one of the tours. Oh you live in China? (my superior stalking skills)
For my portfolio work, because I was an IB diploma student I ended up using mostly my IB work. Thus, I accumulated the work over something like two years. I included 1-2 figure drawings, one technical drawing, several abstract paintings, sculptures and photography. With the exception of that one technical drawing, the only other technique based pieces I put in there were the three home tests themselves. I would say that you should definitely have one or two which show of technical skill, but again remember those home test drawings can show that in themselves (I barely ever draw non- abstract stuff so I used my bicycle drawing to do that...). I also put in 2 pages from my workbook (I used my IB work book because it had alot of information in it).
Are you taking IB art? But of course! (I should hope) If you are, don't go just for passing IB Art - bloody ace that shit. What I mean is that the time you put into that IB subject can be redirected to your portfolio so basically if you're working on that stuff at school you'll have many portfolio pieces! However there are some pieces which might not fit the criterion of the IB, so you have to do those in your own time. TBH I RARELY worked at home for any of my portfolio pieces - out of the 18 IB stuff, I used maybe 50%. Some of my stuff came from the RISD Pre-college program and once or twice I would put in things from the same series (eg. two pictures of a sculpture or two photographs from the same series) and when I needed to I went in during my free periods and lunch break at school to work in the art department.
IMO you should look at all your design stuff and traditional/technical stuff as one group - just pick the stuff you like. That, and have 1-2 drawings that REALLY show off technical ability as a baseline (just to tell them you can).
I'm not sure what year (oh you're a senior) you're in but I think you should have enough work to finish your portfolio I think preferably before the home tests are released...? (I can't remember the dates for these things.... so if that sounds really impossible maybe its because my memory's screwing with me). In the end: Make more work than you need. Then cut down. Some good doodles and workbook stuff also qualify as really great portfolio pieces!
For the home test drawings, I started thinking about them and trying stuff out as soon as they announced them - started over the bike and the double sided. I took my time with the first and it took me like a month or maybe almost two( lol ). The second took me half that and the last took me a week. Apparently this year you only have to do two drawings (which I'm really mad at RISD about because three is tradition).
Hmm... if you're in your last year and you DONT have any portfolio pieces yet I would be worried, and would start right away.
Ermes.... you can see my actual stuff at www.cargocollective.com/silreenjello . Look at the dates of the works to figure out which ones I probably used for my portfolio.
I probably type alot, and not alot of it is useful or relevant (I word vomit alot) please tell me where I need to elaborate, actually forgot to answer or something of the sort.
Regarding classes, chill! Like I said, I was in diploma so that's 6 ib subjects! For SAT's try not to let it take up all of your time and distribute a good portion of it to your artwork. I only got 1700 for SATs and got in, yah?

yea i'm somewhat worried because the works i've been doing over the past 2 years...i'm not really sure if its portfolio-worthy if you know what i mean :/

Absolutely. I applied last year (So i'm in the graduating class of '14) and am probably something like two years your senior. Yes, I was in IB art (my teachers barely helped out by the end of IB I swear I knew the criterion as well as them or better)
