Alright, to simply put it
There are three masks that control three fundamental aspects of the universe.
Time, self-explanatory, known as the Vahi
Life, the creation of new beings, known as the Ignika
Creation, the ideas and creativity from the living beings, currently unnamed
These masks where created by figures known as Great Beings, and these Great Beings created two brother Artakha and Karzahni, with which these two brothers fought over the Mask of Creation, with Artakha winning. With this in place, the two are placed in basically separate realms.
This all takes place on the planet of Spherus Magna.

On Spherus Magna, a substance know as "Energized Protodermis" is Discovered, which led to an event known as the "Core Wars" during which, the planet ultimately shattered, giving Spherus Magna two moons, and turning it into Bara Magna.
Upon the shattering, the Great beings decided to explore these two new moons, and began the construction of the Matoran Universe.
