# About me
I am a 2010 graduate of Penn State Mont Alto with a B.A. in English. I have been reading and writing stories and poetry my entire life, but I've only recently made serious progress towards completing a novel. My novels are almost always fantasy, but my poetry can range along many topics, though most are written to be quiet, sad, or introspective. I have to say... Sometimes I hate the dA community.
I searched "Star Trek" (looking for a cool image to add to my "Things I Love" Facebook album), and on every page of results, there was -- frequently nude -- Kirk/Spock slash artwork.
That just should not happen.

*sigh* Alas, thanks to the internet, people's private fantasies become very, very public. You could turn on the mature filter, that way you won't have to worry about seeing those pictures. Unless they are just kissing or something. With clothes. Gah. Ick. CAN'T UNSEE!

Eh, it's not the nudity that bothers me.
It's the---well, there's not a standard term for it (as far as I know), but I call it "character distortion." It's when a fanboy/girl community becomes large enough, and produces enough media, that it actually distorts the character... creating a parallel version of the character that conforms to the community's fantasies.
One person writing one parallel version of a character wouldn't be a "character distortion." But, when the fan community gets large enough for its members to feed each other, they start to standardize the distorted traits (like physical features, sexual proclivities, romantic partners), keeping them fairly consistent. THAT'S when the fantasies go from being "private fantasies," as you called them, to being full-blown character distortions.
...And that's what I can't stand. All I can think when I see character distortion artwork for Star Trek is, "That's not Spock." And it bothers me -- on a deep, perverting-my-childhood level -- that I can't search for MY Spock (the real Spock) without seeing so much of the parallel, distorted one.

*nods* I understand, and I think you just articulated (far better) the underlying reasons I don't like a lot of the fanart that goes around dA. Although I state it more like: "Ewww, they wouldn't do that! that's not them!" I just suggested the maturity filter in an attempt to block out that distorted parallel Spock as much as possible, since I don't think you would see normal Spock naked, like, ever. ^_^;;
