Hi Wallace! Had a fun day today: First cleaning metal with ammoniak, neutralising it with vinegar then staining it with LoS...

I got the extended life Gel you recommended and I did like it, I think it generally worked pretty well, but in the past I have used the liquid one; undiluted and things basically turned black INSTANTLY so I was kind of bummed out that now my brass turned all kinds of colours; reds, blues and grays; it might just be something to do with the ratio of water to gel, but would you have any tips about how to dilute it?

yay

I don't use ammonia, or vinegar.  Both are, in my opinion, un-necessary.  You can use bicarb of soda for neutralising, and it is kinder to the nose.  Just was your piece in soapy water and dry, or not.   Add to a watered down solution, rinse, redip, and repeat as needed.  Don't neutralise until the very end.  I never do at all.  I just rinse and then add either Renaissance Wax,  or PermaClear.  Both are good,  but the latter lasts very much longer.

Mixing the gel with water is the same technique as adding the other stuff you used.  The ratio can vary on what you want.  The least you add, the weaker it will be of course.  I could say work on a 1:10 ratio,  but I honestly don't keep track.  Just add more to suit - to cold water.   If I want it black to start with,  I add the silver to a heated solution.   This has the advantage of least flaking.

It is trial and error.  Victoria Lansford has a good tutorial on using LoS on youtube.

Oh, that's really good to hear that the ammonia is optinoal. I was assuming it was but it's so good to here it of someone who actually knows what they are doing I haven't yet got neither renaissance wax nor the PermaClear, but I will order some; thanks a lot for inforcing that this is really important!

curiously, the leaflet that came with the product suggested warm water; have you noticed a difference?

Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate it!

no worries Astrid,  glad to help

I only have experience to give you.  The warm water makes things go black very quickly, so slow dips in cold.  you can make a stronger solution.  Warm water does work well and will give you the petrol colours, but you have to be quick or it goes black as mentioned.
I use both after treatments.  I have a penguin I made about 3 years ago,  it is still black.  It is in the gallery somewhere!  lol I used ProtectaClear on that.

experience is what is actually most reliable. If you have experience you tend to ask the right questions. So thanks a lot for yours! I think I'll put it all into a document and read in it every time I run into a bump...

Thank you!

And yes, I can see that - and that is exactly what makes your work so great. It's all unique with a clever personal touch, rather than clones of the stuff you see on shelves.
