Heading your way in two days! Pity it's only to New York.
So close... like when you came to Sydney.

I just realized I wasn't following you anymore since you got a new account while I was away. Needed to fix that. And it is me who should be thanking you for the :+watch:. You are one of my first (if not the first) watchers here on dA. And I appreciate that.

Awesome! I've never been to New York, but have always wanted to go. I've heard that once you get out of the city, it's really quite beautiful there. But of course, I mostly want to go because I'm a musical theatre nerd and have always wanted to see a show on Broadway.
How long is your trip? Do you have any specific plans while you're going to be there? Will this be your first time in the U.S.? (Now look, you've gone and gotten me all excited. )
Wish I lived a bit closer to New York. Do let me know if you ever plan a trip up to Alaska, will you? I promise, she won't disappoint!

I love musical theatre too (and what a travesty it is they put Russell Crowe as Javert - totally ruins it with his 'singing'), and that's actually part of our trip, see a Broadway show!
No specific plans as yet. We have about 2 weeks doing the galleries and stuff, then once that's over we can do what we like. It all depends on money. Ideal is road tripping from NYC across to the other side of the country to fly home. That may not happen now. And yes! First time in the US! Hell, first time outside of Australia!
I'd LOVE to go to Alaska. I'll have to add that as a possibility. You'd have to be my tour guide.

Aw, Russell did alright. I didn't think his singing fit for how I imagined Javert to sound, but I was surprised with how well he actually sounded if that makes any sense.
Wow, I'm totally jealous. You'll have to let me know if Broadway is worth all the hype! I don't know what's playing there, much less what will be playing a year from now, but do you have a specific show you're hoping to see? I always wanted to see Phantom of the Opera and Les MisΓ©rables.
I do hope you have the time and money to drive across country. (And perhaps up to Alaska, eh?) That would be quite a trip! And do let me know if you ever have plans to visit here. I'll gladly be your tour guide! It would give me an excuse to do more touristy things here.

Sounds like the international recording is putting all the others to shame. I looked around for it online. Is this the one you speak of?

Look up Philip Quast as Javert to see how Javert should sound, and you'll see why I think he's awful!
Haha, my expectation of Broadway is that because there's so much stuff on all the time, it's mostly average performers. I'll see anything, really. I've seen Les Miserables around 20 times (and I had a sensational cast, many of which were on the International Cast Recording), I've also seen Phantom, and wasn't much impressed. Have also seen Cats a couple times. Maybe Miss Saigon? No idea if that still plays anywhere.
That would be sensational! We could look at bears and moose. I don't know what else there is in Alaska. WOLVES! Truck drivers. Umm, just things they show on TV.

Oh, he's the one in the 10th anniversary concert. I looked up some videos and you are right; he is really good. I'm used Jacques Mercier, who plays Javert in the original London cast recording. He's alright, but not the best I've heard.
I went back and saw the movie again recently and liked Russell Crowe significantly less the second time around. Though I admit there were _moments_ when I thought he was alright. For instance, I really liked Javert and Valjean's confrontation after Fantine's death. I think the first time, I was just excited to be seeing it. Aw well, though. I still thought the movie was great, but look forward to seeing it live one day.
Was there some specific reason you weren't taken with Phantom? Was it just a bad cast or did you just not care for the music or story? Phantom of the Opera has always been one of my favourites. I'm wondering, in the case that you just had a terrible performance, have you seen the 25th Anniversary Production of Phantom recorded at the Royal Albert Hall some time this past summer? (winter for you) It's out on DVD and Bluray here in the states and was also released to select cinemas for one showing only. Saw it. Loved it. Probably will be the closest thing I'll get to seeing the stage production of that one as Alaska doesn't attract many big name productions.
Even I haven't seen a wolf here. But I could probably manage a couple bears or some moose! Or a whale! Bring warm clothes if ever you come. We've not been terribly warm here, even in the summer. I've got a few ideas for things to do. Just let me know!

Yes ma'am, and original Australian, but he'd gone to London before I saw it.
Yeah, Crowe was okay in some parts, but completely botched the big numbers. I liked the movie overall, but I couldn't help but judge it harshly. I wouldn't mind seeing a director's cut, because some of the edits just made no sense.
No, I like the music in Phantom, but when I saw it it just lacked... something. At no point was I engrossed in it, and I think the sound was pretty crap in the venue, plus the cast wasn't brilliant.
That was one of the things with Les Mis I think, the Australian cast was brilliant. Normie Rowe played Valjean. He was a big aussie rocker back in his day, and he spent months training to go for the role. I read someone once said to his manager of his performance of Bring Him Home, that man sings like he's either lost a son or been to war, to which his manager replied, he's done both.
Debbie Byrne as Fantine, also a former pop singer (although her come back was in Cats as Grizabella, surprising a lot of people), she made it onto the international cast recording, along with Anthony Warlow (easily the best Enjolras by far!) Plus our Cossette and Marius launched their careers with it too.
When Phantom came, Cosette played Christine, Normie Rowe's understudy was the Phantom (nowhere near as good), but by the time I saw it... all no names.
A friend of mine went to Alaska, I'm jealous of his photos!! Spent a lot of time there and in Canada, got photos of grizzlies fishing and all sorts of things.
