Could I ask you a bit more about Australia?

Yes, but Autumn's one of my favourite seasons because of the colours and such.
No problem, are there any specific things you want to know?

Zieberich In reply to alphonze191 [2011-05-28 16:56:02 +0000 UTC]
Ahh,yes that's true of course.
Hm,I'm interested in all sorts of information, basically.
Ideally it would be what differs it from, say, the U.S.A., like cultural differences and such. Other than that, all sorts of things, geography, religion, popular foods&drinks/music/sports,schoolsystem,peculiarities, what's currently working well, what isn't etc. And politics. Which party's currently ruling, who's president and what's the direction they're going.
Also which stereotypes are wrong and which aren't. And what's the relationship between Australia and other countries (neighbors,'mother-colonies' etc) like, both politically and,er,mood-wise?like.
Uhm,you don't have to answer all of these and can take as much time as you want to,of course.

alphonze191 In reply to Zieberich [2011-05-28 21:51:45 +0000 UTC]
OK, well:
In Australia we believe we're more relaxed than America, or on a whole we're just a fairly relaxed country.
Australia's the smallest continent but the largest island. The East coast is beaches, cities and mountains. In the North its tropical and they have rainforests. The middle of Australia is all desert, and to the West is also desert. Our capital is Canberra, lots of people tend to think it's Sydney because its bigger, more entertaining and has the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Canberra is more of a political city, like Washington.
We're a very diverse country so we have lots of different cultures. Because of that we have many different religions, but the dominating one is Christianity. But we have large synagogues in larger cities like Sydney.
Vegemite is something we grew up with so many Australians like it. We eat it on bread products mainly, but there are some strange variations. People from abroad don't tend to like it as a rule because of its salty taste. Because of our multiculturalism we eat lots of Asian and Italian style foods
We do have barbecues but not always on the beach with shrimp The popular adult drink is beer, but there isn't a sole drink that we favour.
ACDC is our most famous band next to the Wiggles. We don't have a particular preference in music though. There's a lot of famous Australian poetry though from people like Banjo Patterson.
Australia's generally a sport fuelled country.People love a good game and sometimes we can get really competitive. Our favourite football is AFL (Aussie rules football) and we play a lot of cricket. We play a lot of different sport though - swimming, basketball, soccer, etc... The main one is AFL though. Unlike America we aren't big on Baseball, but we do have a team. There is a strong rivalry between the British colonies in sport (New Zealand, Pakistan, India, South Africa)and Engalnd, of course.
School systems are pretty much the same. Kids start school (Kindergarten) when they're 5, attend primary until they're 12 and go to high school until 18. University is for specialized subjects and people choose whether they want to go or not.
I wouldn't call them peculiarities, but we have a different accent and outside Australia people tend to ask if we are British.
Well, the Australian dollar is faring very well at the moment against the US dollar which is good for us. Things are generally cheaper for us if we order them from America instead of buying in the store. The state of origin (rugby league) is on at the moment and that divides most of the population into 'team groups'. There's a large competitiveness even with ourselves.
Politics - we have a Prime Minister instead of a President. It's compulsory to vote in Australia. We vote for members of the political party and not the leader. The political party that wins the election chooses the Prime Minister. Currently we have our first female PM in office - Julia Gillard.
She's part of the labour government which tends to be more socialist in nature. The liberals are more pro big business - more capitalist in nature.
Stereotypes - We don't always have barbecues, but we do have them. We say mate and g'day but it's just part of our language. We tend to nickname and abbreviate and use lots of slang. We call sandals thongs. Arvo = afternoon. Ankle biter = small child. Fair dinkum - fair go. The younger generation don't tend to use as much slang.
We have lots of wildlife and they do come into the cities. You have to be careful of crossing Kangaroos on the road in most places. Depending on where you live there can be lots of wildlife in the suburbs. In some butchers shops they sell game meat like kangaroo, crocodile, emu, etc...
We are still part of the commonwealth so the Queen is our monarch, but we get to make our own political choices. She doesn't have a great influence on us as people and leaves the running of the country to the PM. We get quite a few holidays because she's our monarch though
We have strong ties with other commonwealth countries like New Zealand. We tend to get along with most other countries. Australia tries to help with diplomatic solutions but we aren't a huge key player.
Hope that helps, I'm happy to answer anymore questions

Thank you very much!
If I remember correctly it was the coasts that were the most populated, too, right? Because of their conditions.
Ah, like Canada's Toronto.
I see. Are there social tensions between different ethnicities or religions? If so, to what extent?
I didn't know about vegemite yet, but wikipedia, int it's wisdom, told me it's something similiar to marmite, which I at least heard of. But I'd like to try it, I hope it's sold around here somewhere, too.
Oh, now I finally know where that Hot Potato song is from. :'D
I just recently heard Waltzing Matilda in the radio actuall, what a coincidence. There was a report about the Australian female soccer team, I think, and afterwards the editor himself requested it. Something like that.
Over here it's basically soccer, soccer and soccer with a hint of handball every now and again.
Playful rivalry or SRS BSNS?
Because of your colonial history, I take it? Well, yes ...um, you know what I mean.
Sounds familiar, yes.
I'm sorry, is pecularities used in a pejorative way? I didn't want it to sound like that.
Australia had many British immigrants at some point, right? Maybe it's a British accent's evolved form.
Yeah, same with the Euro. Poor guys.:c
Also with soccer, people care so much about it it borders on obsession sometimes.
Ah. Do you think obligation is a good thing? We don't have it and the voter fatigue is a really big problem at times. But you never know, maybe it has it's disadvantages as well. If you have a female Prime Minister I suppose you are/became socially pretty open-minded?
Is there that much wildlife because of Austrlia's nature or are even developed areas that healthy that wildlife can survive? In my old home town/village there were barely a few foxes and herons...
I see. You're still on good terms with Britain, then?
I was about to ask when the last time you were at war was, but since you have those ties to the UK I suppose you send troops when they do, right? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Again, thanks a lot for taking the time and effort to write all this.
It was very informative and interesting and I really appreciate it. <3
