Båda ville ha lite motiv som är vanligt på önskelistan för tonårskillar, men vad gör man för kompisar.
Två är klara och tre kvar tills övermorgon.
Hur går det med ditt tecknande förresten?

crunchturtle In reply to samisi [2009-01-16 18:34:23 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. Trying to get more detailed backgrounds, perspectives and scenes into it. /= Sadly, when it takes four days to finish one page because the backgrounds of one or two panels are driving me insane, I sometimes wonder if it's worth it. After all, I'm only about three pages ahead of schedule at the moment, so it's a bit stressful. XD;;
I got some intense critique earlier about how there are way too many modern things present (the script told me that Tate used a marker in one of the recent pages, and I'm not sure when markers were first invented), and not enough references to that it's set in an environment supposed to be in the early 1900's... and I'm torn between fixing it and leaving it the way it is. /=
The script writer tells me to leave it and ignore everything the commenters said, but I don't want to seem like I'm not trying to do research. D=

samisi In reply to crunchturtle [2009-01-16 20:16:03 +0000 UTC]
The backgrounds are amazingly atmospheric! But, of course, it's a tough choice whether or not to keep putting four days into each page ... It would be quite horrible if you died of stress to save the intricate bg's.
... Well. My first reaction to the research/time-correctness is: listen to the script writer. If he doesn't consider it an important aspect of the story, then it probably isn't.
My second reaction is: listen to yourself, and consider (critics aside!) whether or not you feel it to be an important aspect of the story.

crunchturtle In reply to samisi [2009-01-16 20:37:23 +0000 UTC]
Yeeah... Not to mention that it's terribly annoying to work on nothing but the same page for four days in a row. D= Once I'm almost done, I'm willing to sacrifice some details just to get the damn thing overwith. Something that I usually regret once the page goes up online. /=
Yeah, I figured that I'll stick to what he says, since it's his comic after all, and the characters appearance have already been established by the previous artist. As for what I feel, I don't really care either way when it comes to the inserting of modern items and styles in a 1930's surrounding. /= I don't really care that much about the story or the characters, but I don't want to drop the comic when it's only about 40 pages left to make.

samisi In reply to crunchturtle [2009-01-16 20:51:38 +0000 UTC]
Ugh, I know the feeling. It's not a nice one.
*nods* Then I most certainly do not see why you should let those critics force you to spend more time researching. Just get the thing over with, aye?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
crunchturtle In reply to samisi [2009-01-16 21:51:14 +0000 UTC]
Definitely not. x_x I suppose it's good to be able to look at an older page and see that it's not as good as a recent page, but the feeling of "... I could have spent more time with those drapes" is annoying.
It's not that I feel forced to do research. I like to look up references, even if I don't always know where to look for them. /=
It was mostly my writer's attitude towards the ones giving the critique that put me off a bit. Since it was on Gaia, where it's rare to get any kind of constructive advice, to have four people - who all have experience of working with comics, animation and sequential art in general - commenting on what I can do to make something seem a bit more authentic felt like a great opportunity.
But it was kind of shot down by my writer (who happened to get into a pointless argument with nearly everyone in that thread, and later told me that he wondered if he should stop antagonizing people or not), who called them all idiots who didn't know what they were talking about, and how I shouldn't take all their "advice" as gospel. D= I felt like he was talking to me as if I was twelve years old. ...
-sigh- Yes, I think I'm just going to do my best to get this over with as soon as I can, so I can do something else.

*nods vigorously* Exactly.
... Ouch, damn. It must be a really strange experience to put your creative energy at someone's disposal like that. I don't know if I could do it -- but I guess it's very good technique practice for the time when you can work on your own stuff.
Hang in there. <3

crunchturtle In reply to samisi [2009-01-16 22:55:29 +0000 UTC]
It is. Especially since I haven't had much experience with people like this guy. The only feedback I've been getting about the pages has been "You're doing great." And when I expressed my gratitude about the critique I had been getting, he sent me a PM saying "Well, if it's critique you want..." followed by at least six paragraphs where he pretty much said "All you need is practice. Criticism isn't as valuable to you as you may think." ... which was really confusing to me. /=
Will do. And yes, it's really good technique practice. I wish I had the time to practice using traditional techniques instead of doing everything digitally, though.

samisi In reply to crunchturtle [2009-01-17 13:56:56 +0000 UTC]
Hm. Well, he certainly seems to have his own way of doing things -- which is good. I don't know if his statement was meant specifically for you or as a general rule, but either way, I ... half agree with you both. Criticism isn't something that should affect your work too much, but rather something to make you aware of things you are doing unwittingly, or causes for possible problems you're having.
More than anything, though, I appreciate criticism because it tells me more than 'you're doing great': it tells me what other people see when they look at what I made.
I getcha. It's gonna be great to have you back when it's all done, Cap'n. As 'back' as it gets.

crunchturtle In reply to samisi [2009-01-17 14:17:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, that's my opinion about criticism as well. I'm probably not going to make all the changes someone points out, but I'll still appreciate that someone takes their time to point out what looks off, and I remember what people tell me for the next time I make something. Also, getting nothing but "you're doing great" - comments tends to make me lazy. /=
Heh, I agree.

samisi In reply to crunchturtle [2009-01-17 16:11:28 +0000 UTC]
*nods* All right, then we're quite agreed.
Of course, 'criticism' doesn't have to involve the pointing out of technical mistakes or suchlike. It could well be a detailed elaboration of 'you're doing great'.
