What if, instead of one critique a month, it was one a week? Any serious writerΒ could do that, you would quickly weed out the less-serious peopleΒ and in many ways one a week is easier; I write a webcomic review every week and I find the time to do it, but if it was one a month I would procrastinate until the last minute and maybe even forget about it. I think this issue of less-serious people is the real problem here, so either they get serious or they get out. As someone already said, people need to understand that they have to give critiques to get critiques, that's just sensible. And of course you can be forgiving if people miss a week, that's what the color-coded dots system would allow. If they are red for a month, then youΒ kick them out. In fact the end result might be the same, in that people can give one critique a month and still stay in the group,Β but at least people would feel more urgency to critique things. Telling people to give one critique a month doesn't feel urgent enough.
Other ideas: something only gets moved out of In-Need-Of-Critique after it has received three critiques, so you're not stuck with the first critique you get. And maybe move the limit to two pieces every week, if only so people like me can submit one on Sunday and then another the following Friday; I like one a week, but the system is too rigid. And if an In-Need-Of-Critique folder gets too full, don't allow any submissions until it has been emptied, in fact make an event of it, make it fun. And it would be cool if there was some way to get critiques of longer works, even novel length, like maybe a folder for the first part whereΒ someone canΒ see it and say they would be interested in a critique trade and provides links to works with a roughly equal total word count. And more contests, one a month or so, you don't even need to offer points, being featured is fine.
