Hey, nice tutorial on night photography! (I am also a cannon user and nature/wildlife photographer) I was wondering what you find to be the best glass for shooting animals?

Thanks, glad you found it helpful. The one Canon telephoto that lots of people talk about is the 500mm f/4L. It's a lens I'd like to have but cannot afford. Below that is also the well reviewed 400mm f/5.6L and the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L.
I've used the latter in the past and found performance to be excellent in good light at most focal lengths from wide open. Things are a little more patchy close to the 400mm end and occasionally images can look a little soft if taken in less than ideal conditions. This is even is shutter speeds were fast enough with IS to prevent camera shake, and the subject was fairly static.
All in all, for a good buy on a budget, I'd be taking the 100-400L. I have an even smaller budget, so I use a 1960s Leica 400mm f/5 which is all manual, but gets me the same amount of reach as that aforementioned zoom, and at around one-third of the price!

Thanks for the recommendation! I was looking at the 400 f/5.6 so it's nice to hear it come up. It's cheaper than the 100-400 f/4-5.6 and much sharper at 400 mm. Plus I already have the 70-200 f/4 IS so I wouldn't really miss the zoom. Anyways, thanks for the reply!

There would be some sample variation in the 100-400L zooms. In some cases people have tested it to be as sharp as the 400L at the same focal length and aperture setting. The zoom however loses in terms of AF speed. If you won't miss the rest of the zoom range, the 400L is a good choice as a birding lens where you can usually achieve fast shutter speeds. For general travel photography the zoom might still be better for semi-static subjects because of the IS.

Thank you for the watch! I love your photography. Interesting personality quiz in your journal. I'm scared to take it--it'd probably tell me I should be in a straitjacket already. *lol*

PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE POST. IT'S SO DANG TRUE*
1. At least 2 people in this world love you so much they would die for you.
2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.
3. The only reason anyone would ever hate you is because they want to be just like you.
4. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.
5. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they go to sleep.
6. You mean the world to someone.
7. If not for you, someone may not be living.
8. You are special and unique.
9. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.
10. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good comes from it.
11. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back on the world.
12. When you think you have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won't get it, but if you believe in yourself, probably, sooner or later, you will get it.
13. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.
14. Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know.
15. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are great. Add this as a comment to ten of your friends tonight and at midnight your true love will find you. Hey! Thanks for dropping by. Yes, I'm still getting along fairly well and things are under control at the moment. Occasionally they threaten to spin out of my hands, but fortunately, all these issues haven't gone all that far.

Aww I'm glad things are going well for you, Andrew. So, how's the military going? Are you finished with it?
π: 0 β©: 1
infernal-moltres In reply to maulix [2005-11-27 01:07:17 +0000 UTC]
Things are going smoothly for now, much easier than the training I experienced in the first three months. Sometimes I look back on those days and marvel at even how I managed to survive. There's plenty more days in the military, and I'll be getting out only on March 2007. The difference between me and most other folks is that they are looking forward to getting out. I'm not.
