This time, Chiyo held on to Toma's hand tightly.
She tried to think of something to say.

"You know, Kisaragi-senpai, you could have told me if my brothers bothered you." She attempted to emphasize the next line as much as possible. "You can tell me anything."

She bit her lip. Hopefully, she had gotten the message across without sounding too idiotic.

Toma's hand instinctively squeezed Chiyo's when he heard her offer. If she was doing what he thought she was doing...Had his lie been that obvious? He decided to play dumb, trying to avoid the question.

"Ah, they didn't annoy me that much." Correction, that had annoyed him quite a bit. He had snapped at them. And he rarely ever got angry. He hoped that Chiyo won't find out that he had lectured them - he didn't think she would appreciate the idea of him yelling at her brothers. "But I'll keep that in mind next time if they annoy me." He replied in a joking tone of voice.

He squeezed her hand. It was just for a moment, but Chiyo felt it. She knew he was lying now, she was absolutely sure.

"Aha..." Chiyo reached into her bag and opened her phone inside of it. She felt around for the ring button and clicked it. This was a trick she had learned from her brothers to get out of any conversations she'd like to avoid. She heard her phone rang a second later. "Oh, it looks like my brothers are calling me. Here, you have to call your sister anyway, right? Let's go sit on a bench and rest for a bit."

She pulled out her phone and acted like she was talking with someone, and continued to watch Toma from the corner of her eye.

Toma didn't know what to do. Of course he couldn't call his father. He briefly considered calling his sister, but quickly dismissed the idea. She would be asleep at this time. She had university to attend, after all. Toma took a seat next to Chiyo and just sat there, not doing anything in particular.

Toma's heart almost leapt for joy when he heard his phone ring. He quickly pulled out his phone, angling it slightly so Chiyo couldn't see the name of the caller. His heart plummeted. It was his father again.

Toma's finger hovered over the ignore button. He really didn't want to talk to his father, but with the way that he had been calling him persistently, it was probably best that he got the conversation over and done with now, especially since Chiyo was busy on the phone with someone else. Actually, he could see Chiyo's eyes darting to him. She knew that his phone had rang again. It would look pretty suspicious if he declined two calls within ten minutes. That is, if she wasn't suspicious of him already. Ah, what the hell. Maybe he should pick up the phone already. Toma just looked at the screen indecisively. Two seconds passed. Three. Four. Ten. Twenty. He watched as the screen stopped flashing and a "missed call" notification appeared. After all that, it seems that Toma really couldn't bring himself to hear his father's voice, not when the last time he had heard those raspy words was more than two years ago.

Chiyo continued babbling about ranch and ketchup chips and tofu, acting like she was talking to her brothers. She saw Toma stare hesitantly at his phone until it stopped ringing.

"Hold on for a second." Chiyo said into the phone, even though there was no one to hear her. She cupped a hand over the microphone as though she was muffling the conversation. Chiyo whispered even though it wasn't necessary. "Toma, why didn't you pick up the phone just now? It was probably your sister calling you again."

Chiyo started to suspect that Toma and his sister had a tougher relationship than she had thought.

Toma was silent for a moment, trying to think of an answer. "I...don't really feel like talking to her." He said simply. It probably sounded like a pathetic excuse. "She will probably ask me how Hoshizora's been going for me. Maybe she will probably start talking to me about astronomy or the universe or whatever else you learn here. She really is passionate about that stuff. She probably won't even notice if I'm listening to the stuff she says or not." He said the last few lines almost in melancholy. At least his lie turned out to be the half truth. It makes it easier to say for him. He wondered if Chiyo saw through it, though. She had seen through plenty of his lies already.
