i haven't finished quite yet, threw away a year with game development (which sucked). so now i'm only just getting started with Illu.
and yeah, it's been super long. glad i'm out of the game dev mentality though, that's something i'll keep as a hobby.

yes, i started legit game dev and it was nothing like i imagined it would be. basically i thought i'd be doing a lot of 'concept arting' but in the end i was overblown by tons and tons of programming, math and retarded low-level philosophy. it sucked.

concept art is actually super-uptight. they have a set of rules that you have to follow at all times and deviation from the norm is not at all appreciated.
illustration is basically... drawing. and drawing methods. the subject and shape is completely open. i can have an assignment with the theme 'reverse worlds' and just go crazy on how i fill that in.
about freelancing, that's a yes and no. i love to participate in small projects (or at least i WOULD love to) but aside from that i still have school to worry about.
i see nature from time to time, yes. though it's quite a bit less than before. he's actually in instrument craft school! pretty cool stuff.

Well I've seen Feng Zhu's stuff on concept art and it looks fun? What you're saying is pretty contradictory. Can I have an example of something? What I thought the job to be like is all "Hi, please draw a scene showing the dark geometries of a cliff facade with human generated sci-fi like elements protruding throughout so we can establish a man influenced technological enclosed area feeling"

it looks fun simply because feng zhu has a very defined style that's very standalone. you could say they basically teach you to aspire to to the man as if he were a god.
the reason why it sounds contradictory is because it IS very contradictory. one day they'll tell you to follow these strict guidelines and the next day they'll tell you to 'be creative' with the tools at hand (tehcniques, basically). thing is, the guys are constantly contradicting themselves in their education method it's not even funny after a while. it might be a personal thing of mine but i just can't live with such strict rules, especially when it comes to drawing. i like to be free in my technique and execution which is something they don't support AT ALL.
