Your deviant ID couldn't be more true. I'd love to see some more of your works, they're quite interesting.
Since I've just started college too, maybe we can draw some interesting parallels between different educational systems

Thanks a lot for all your lovely comments, I truly appreciate them I have a lot of stuff that I haven't put on DA yet, but I'll do it eventually!
Only a few weeks left for me to finish my 1st year in college. It would be very interesting to do that, I am always curious about how people face and learn art in other places. The differences are bigger than we might think!

'Art is not a simple, joyous thing'...you're not going to have a very long career if that's how you think of your chosen profession. It should be a simple, joyous thing- people who are TRULY good at what they do, regardless of what it is, are not tortured by it. Maybe I misunderstood, but...if someone loves what they're doing, why change? Some artists can't. I know people who can't afford the same supplies you have readily available at your disposal being an art student, so I don't know if that makes them any less of a 'real' artist to you while they're learning...they work with what they have. I work with what I have, which isn't much. I'm not in traditional media, though, but I have friends who do draw with plain ole pencils and paint with crappy acrylics they bought at the local grocery store because they can't afford oil paints or real acrylics or fancy sketch pencils and charcoals from actual art supply shops. What does that make them? They've learned as much and appreciate art as much as anyone else, so I don't know...I guess I just found that a touch upsetting. Don't take that the wrong way! I get what you were trying to say...I just disagree that art isn't a joyful thing. I'm the happiest when I have the physical strength to create something.
Other than that, I want to say you have a beautiful gallery. I love your use of colour (or lack of) in all your pieces. Good luck with your studies and I hope everything goes well for you

My mistake there, I meant to say that art isn't -just- a simple and joyous thing, although it seems a bit out of context if you say it like that. I also didn't have oils a year ago. The materials have nothing to do with skill or will. I am very very humble concerning art, and I think all artists should be. In our age people aren't usually humble, and I see that a lot of my fellow art students lose a lot by chuckling at some of the teacher's remarks and thinking they're better than everything else.
Now I have materials because I really have to for college and for my career. Until then I drew with pencils and started buying some stuff here and there to try different things. I prefer spending my money on some brushes than on a nice shirt or something like that. The materials I have are the result of quite some years of collecting, even the graphite pencils I use are like 4cm long, I use them 'till the end. In my country we students don't get discounts on art stuff, so I'm not that privileged for being an art student.
Art should definitely be fun, or else you should be doing something else, of course. I have a lot of fun when I dedicate time to my art, and I feel like I am transported to my own world.
I hope you continue to pursue your ideas and and your art aswell

Okay I thought that's what you meant but it sounded particularly odd to me especially when I saw how expressive your paintings (and even simple sketches) are. And I'm sorry I took it out of the context it was in, the line just struck me It irritates me when people get big heads about them when it comes to their work, there's *always* more to learn! The only people who lose out are the ones who don't pick up on that - that's why I love looking at other people's work as much as I love making my own creations. It helps me see my own way of making things in a whole different light.
And yeah, I don't think very many of the art students here get a lot of support either...but who knows, my country is very strange sometimes in how they do things >_< I was actually thinking of a friend of mine who lives in a very, very tiny apartment and doesn't have much space for art supplies or much money to spend on them so she made one big investment in her Wacom and that was that. I do have another friend, however, who is younger and is preparing to enter university as an art student this coming fall who does exactly what you do and I admire her greatly for it - as she never thought she'd end up being a painter when she first took an interest in art. I think her school, however, is going to help her with supplies and such because she was very fortunate to get a scholarship...I wasn't sure if that's how it is overseas (but now I'm enlightened ).
And I agree, art should always, always be a fun thing. Even if you grumble a bit when you sit down to practice daily haha
Thank you for being so sweet and nice about my comment! I didn't want you to be offended >_< I just found it very odd and I wanted to make sure I was interpreting it correctly <3

I would wither away if I didn't look at other people's art regularly And we also have scholarships here, but it's not easy to get them. We can get a scholarship if we have very bad financial problems. There are some that get a scholarship for good work and good grades in college, but those are only given in the middle of the person's course. Most of my fellow art students don't have space in their homes to work either, but they work in the college where there is some space for that. I'm sure things here aren't so different from the states. The real difference is the market, illustrative artists here aren't that much because they don't have the market you have in USA, with the game and movie industries. You guys are very lucky for having them available there!
And no problem, I saw that you misunderstood my comment and that's completely fine Good luck with your art too! Whether it's for fun of to follow it more seriously as a career, we must love doing it.
