RFP, this is WandererTJ from the 405th.
A long long time ago I was following your jackal build and your work amazed me and I absolutely loved your shield.

While I understand that the shield was made from the plastic backing of a 3-ft convex security mirror, I must ask, where/how did you get it?
Is the "backing" like a protective shipping packaging, or did you actually disassemble one of those mirrors?

I'm looking at those mirrors online and they are like $300 which is pretty crazy. I would extremely appreciate any additional info you could provide on how to obtain the plastic. I have to guess that you found a way to get it cheaply unless it is actually part of a mirror assembly you took apart.
I mean, sure, I guess you could steal one from a parking garage but, idk...

I don't typically sign into DeviantArt, so I don't know where it would be best for me to receive your response. Is there any chance you could message me on the 405th?
www.405th.com/member.php/28676…

I'm also really curious as to where you are on your Hunter build!

EDIT: I suppose I should additionally ask, what material did you end up using, acrylic? Plexiglass? Lexan? Polyethylene? Polyurethane?

And also, which company did you get the plastic from without the mirror part, how much did it cost, and would you by chance still happen to know what the part number for it was?

EDIT 2: Also, this is probably my fault, but I asked you these questions a long time ago, and you told me to remind you, and I probably should have reminded you a long time ago....
It'd be totally awesome if you responded on your thread on the forums!

Hey there! I wish I had my login info still for the forums, but it's been so long that I don't remember it anymore...

I wish I could recall the company we went to for security mirrors, but my dad ordered it and he doesn't talk to me anymore...so....yeah.

But basically we ended up talking to a manager on the phone about ordering the plastic itself. It only cost like $40 or something. They had to create a separate part number for it, so you can talk to them about doing something similar. But it's part of the mirror itself, and you wouldn't want to disassemble one, because I feel that would be expensive and risky with how it would turn out.  I'm sure some mirror company out there would be willing to help. I am not sure what material the plastic is, but it was pretty solid. I went with a 3 foot in diameter one, because it fit the scale of the costume the best.

Wish I had more info for you.

PS: As far as the hunter costume goes...well. I scrapped the plans for it. Basically I got accepted into the School of Education at my university, and that sapped a LOT of free time of mine. And by the time that was done with, I lost a lot of interest in Halo costume making. I then briefly got interested in furry-type costumes, but for now I'm just drawing these days. Sorry to disappoint.

Response (2 of 2)
On an additional note to my other resonse, I would love to bounce some ideas around with you.

The reason I am so interested in the Kig-Yar shield is because while we have never seen a spartan in halo using one, seeing as they are "spartans" it would only make since to come across one with a shield. Plus, it would be freaking awesome to run around with a shield and an energy sword.

So I do plan on having a shield with my spartan build, but seeing as I consider you to be the expert on them, I would really like your opinion on the matter. Do you think that a spartan (I am 6'1", so I should be around 6'5" or so fully armored up) by comparison to a Jackal, would also use a 36" shield? I mean, that is actually the size of shield spartans used historically, so I think it would make sense, but by size comparison, I would like to make things look accurate in terms of scale, which I think you would totally understand how I feel in those regards.

Also, although you have walked a mile in a Jackal's shoes (and stilts ) and as such you might be disturbed by the following idea, what would your opinion be on having a severed forearm of a jackal still attached to the shield? You could probably have the bone of the forearm sticking out to be used as a handle. I mean, perhaps that is the only way for a spartan to successfully use a jackals shield, idk. It would add extra weight and complexity when building it, but on the other hand, it could make people shut up when they try to hassle you saying that it is impossible for a spartan to use a point defense gauntlet.
Otherwise, I think I would just leave it as just the shield without a severed arm attached to it, which I kinda like the idea of better, and since Spartans were probably much larger than jackals, although it was wrist-mounted on a jackal, the wrist band could just be the right size for a spartan to just use as a handle.

Any thoughts you can share would be appreciated!

randomflyingpigeons In reply to WandererTJ [2014-06-24 20:22:05 +0000 UTC]

I think the jackal arm idea is pretty sweet, but it might be trickier to be able to handle it well given the weight of the shield.

People are gonna complain about the accuracy of having a Spartan with a Jackal shield, but whatever. I'm sure humans could have reverse engineered it at some point. Fuck tha haters.

I would personally go with the 36 incher. Anything larger than that is gonna be unwieldly and a pain in the ass to work with. It'll look fine. Trust me, a yard in diameter is pretty damned big. Go right up next to a non-moving train car some time and compare yourself to the size of one of its wheels. That'll give you a good idea of how big the shield will be.

(Response 1 of 2)
Awesome, you responded really quickly! I wasn't sure when you would see that message.

I apologize for being the king of really long messages, so as you read this, please feel free to take your time in responding.

While I am sad I won't see you as a Hunter, I totally understand in regards to your Hunter costume build. I've been on a 3 or 4 year hiatus due to my engineering classes; I never even managed to start a build in the first place. Now that I have been graduated for a year, I thought it was time to pick up a lot of the projects and ideas I needed to set aside in order to do good in school.
Stay with it, life will get easier, school is rough!!!

No worries on the lack of information, it is my fault for asking for it at a time long past when the details would have been easily remembered; but it is nice to know that it cost roughly $40!
I really wish you knew what the material was though :/. If you moved your arm around fast would it wobble or anything? If you still have it around, can you measure the thickness of it?
I ask this because I could possibly find another route to take in creating it with a sheet of plastic rather than buying a convex one outright, but it would be nice to know the material and thickness yours was, because yours does look pretty solid and I think I remember you saying that it was pretty lightweight, though I'm not sure how much you said it weighed.
But yeah, from what I've seen in terms of looking at those mirrors, I've noticed that they are either glass, plexiglass, or acrylic, I just don't have any experience at all with acrylic, I honestly just thought it was a type of paint lol.

In the past, I've bought a 36" circular piece of 1/4" High Density Polyethylene for a shield (it was not convex in shape) for boffer fighting (full contact with foam-padded weapons, similar in looks to LARP but not similar in functionality or playstyle) and damn it is heavy haha. In hindsight, I think I remember someone telling me that I should have gone with 3/8" and just to reinforce it in certain places with extra plastic.
When I bought the plastic core for the shield, I had to buy a massive sheet of the polyethylene. I think it was 4-ft by 10-ft or something crazy like that (maybe 4'x8'), and I additionally had to pay for them to cut a disk of it out in a circle. I think the plastic alone cost me $100, but that shield is actually meant to take a pounding and come back for more. On the plus side, I still have all the leftover plastic to make more shields from.

But anyways, I would prefer to not be carrying around something that is in excess of 5-lbs all day like that shield I mentioned above. Don't get me wrong though, I do look completely badass at renn-faires haha.

It really sucks that you are no longer in contact with your dad, I don't know what happened, and whatever happened I'm sorry that it did. Hopefully you two will be able to be a family again. I'm cheering for you and I wish you the best!

Q: I've seen 2 types of convex security mirrors, there are some that are in the form of domes (kinda like a bubble shield in Halo 3 lol) and then there are ones which are a lot more shallow but still convex. Would I be correct in assuming that you used the more shallow security mirror's plastic rather than a full dome?

Q: I asked earlier if you could measure the shield if you still had it, and excuse me if I am out of line in asking this, but if you do still have it, would you be willing to sell it? I know that you don't ever do the same build twice, but I don't know what your opinion is on keeping things you've worked hard on. Personally, I would totally have everything on display like Iron Man's hall of armors or like the glass display cases Batman has in the batcave, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. I'm not sure how much I could commit to buying it without seeing it in person first and feeling how sturdy it is or anything, but I am a curious individual nonetheless.

Oh, and fyi, you were RFPnoodle on the forums, in case that's what you couldn't remember.

randomflyingpigeons In reply to WandererTJ [2014-06-24 20:18:28 +0000 UTC]

1. It would wobble slightly but it was pretty sturdy. It was about 5+ pounds though. Which is why we designed the arm harness for it, to take off some of the pressure on my hand holding the shield. The harness was shaped like a joystick, that connected to the center of the shield. There was a long metal piece that extended up my forearm, which you couldn't see when holding the shield. But two straps attached to it, which helped take the weight off my hand.

2. It was a shallower-type mirror.

3. I already sold it on ebay a while back when I was badly in need of money.

Just a quick update on Karata: I did the hands/claws on his wings and also his paws. I just need to sew the 3 paws on his legs and still have to do the claws. I decided to do that right now since I am running out of the fabric. The face is almost done. I am missing a piece of the ear that is pink so that will have to wait until I get back home. Still missing a better nose. Almost done with the details also to. Since I do not have enough fabric, I could only do 3 fingers for his paws but if I find more of that fabric, I will add the missing ones.

hi there, I am an aspiring Hunter cosplayer, and I just saw your recent vid, I know you aren't sharing the progress or plans yet, but I was curious on what version you are doing?

I'm making a Halo: Reach version, and I am not sure on how to approach the height issue. I'm sure you know that these beasts are 12 feet tall, I'm only 5'5 and would like to get at least 7 feet out of this thing, but I don't want to have the head popping up obscenely like another cosplayer I have seen. What are you going to do for the feet? Also, how much does paper tape cost? I'm sure it is less expensive than the route I was gonna take, which was to make it entirely out of plastic.

I am not very good at making things like this, but I'm good on speculation and design. I was hoping that maybe we could collaborate on ideas or if not at least I could get some more advice.

What are you going to use for the green 'bottle' like pieces on the gun? I found some pretty similar shaped juice bottles, so I might just use those, but they are round. Would it be a good idea to put actual liquid in these things or no? I think It would make a cool effect, or do you have an idea as to make them actually glow?

What kind of paint do you use for the armor, and how does rain effect your costumes? (I live in Washington so this question is important XD)

Thank you for your time if you decide to respond c:>

randomflyingpigeons In reply to Taito-nii-san [2011-07-16 20:49:14 +0000 UTC]

I'm planning on making a Reach version unless Halo 4's are cooler.

Paper tape is pretty inexpensive considering. Though, if you live in Washington (I hear it rains a lot) cardboard may not be the best option. I usually spray my painted cardboard with a spray water protector of sorts, but it works for bumps and scratches and light moisture, not full-on rain.

I'm making stilts for the feet, so that should add some height. I'm a bit torn about the height, because in most of the halo games they're like 8-10 feet tall based on combat or relaxed position, and in Reach they are larger (12 feet or so) I'm settling on somewhere around 8-10 feet since anything taller is not going to look proportional enough for me. And apparently Hunters are different sized based on the planet's gravity/atmosphere, etc. So who knows what they would be like on Earth?

The other thing you can add to height with is build up from not just under your feet, but also above your head. If you have your face somewhere in like the belly of the beast (heh) then you'll add considerable height in this respect. Me, I just eyeball everything, though I'll probably measure that just a little bit.

I didn't really buy anything except for raw materials. The costume was made from cardboard, liquid latex, and some fabrics. If I had to estimate for the costume alone I spent a little more than $100 on it. The shield, however--buying the raw materials for that, that is, a large plastic disc, was about $50.

Good luck with the costume. If you get pics up, be sure to link me to them. I'd love to see it!
