hey I know you're not one to really care what people think, but I just wanted to say thanks.. I read through the famed thread, and just reading your comments really changed my perspective on photography and what constitutes "good" art and such. so thank you, I guess? haha.

bad art is an art in itself.
if art is self expression.
a failed attempt at expression is expressing something also.
everyone is expressing always.
a personality is an expression
a fight is a forceful expression

no, the cliche is not important, originality is not important.
its about expression and intent.
if you intend to express something but it comes off completely wrong, then its ineffective.
basically, I feel like we practice art so we know how to communicate, not create pretty images.

that's the problem with it, how do we know what the artist intends to express? even if we think we get it, maybe we think it's brilliant...but is it then 'bad art' because the artist meant something completely different by it?
or what if they made it just to make some art? not everybody hasa message behind them.
i do agree with you on the communication point, art is the simplest and most admirable form of brevity.

if we dont get what the artist is expressing then it is our own fault and its not bad art.
art and photography is meant for a lot of things, there are things that ask us to think and some are just there to be pleasant to look at.
in other words art is mostly there to be enjoyed not over anylysed bit through bit though every flaw.
ok not everyone can be annie lebovitz but seriously maybe those people who are on deviant art who are popular because they just enjoy photography as a hobby and like creating pretty pictures and shit.
keep in mind that some people on deviant art need time to develop their skills, they can't have it all at the age of 12 you know....?

So I have a gas mask. I'm considering one of two things: an interpretation of 'The Wall' or having my dog wear it in front of a power plant. They're both cliche, but it's a start at conceptual photography, am I right?

but if you know its cliche. then why would you do it
you cant just throw a gas mask on something and call it conceptual.
you gotta think of what a gas mask represents in the setting and who is wearing it, and what they are wearing.
everything is important.
to be a painter, you need to know every element in the painting.
