I haven't been out much. Hand-bottled a small batch of cranberry wine once. Did a thorough inventory. And we tore down a pack-rat infested shed and disposed of it. At our last shareholder meeting it appeared we'd just plod along, at least until the end of the year. Gerard, an active, working partner, has been hanging out there on the weekends, trying to make sense of all the records, and determine the winery's net worth. We still sell enough wine to pay the bills. Our next shareholder meeting was cancelled, because there is nothing new to discuss or decide. We'll probably stay open for a while in early 2018, but all indications are that we will sell the winery, and the seperate 4-acre orchard as soon as possible. The winery has outstanding loans, and the orchard land has never been fully paid for, so we can't just shutter the winery and let the orchard go wild. I'd hate to see it all sold at auction, and developers come in, but that's a likely scenario.

Was reading my comments. Didn't know if I updated you on the winery. Building and land were sold, except for the orchard land. Partners were allowed to take all the bottled wine we wanted, but not bulk wine. Bulk wine has to be transferred to another winery, one that has both a grower's license and a seller's license. There was interest, but no one came forward, so we had to have 6000 gallons of wine pumped out to be dumped. Everything is gone now: all the wine, all the equipment, the events, everything. The new owner's of the property live in Placitas, publish the local paper, and say they will open the winery space to events as before. Hasn't happened yet. I'll certainly miss the poetry and belly dancing, the wine-food-pairing dinners, the music, the Holiday arts and crafts show, being part of the Placitas-wide art studio tour, and being surrounded by Jim's wood sculptures. Never thought I'd see that wine cellar empty. All those dozens of stainless steel wine tanks are gone. No one stepped forward to buy them, and they went to scrap. So many tanks, 600, 300, 150, 75, and 37.5 gallon tanks - all gone. All that is left are wine stains on the cellar floor and and even (oops) on the walls. I don't know when or if the orchard will ever be sold. Besides the village water coming from the ditches for irrigation, there is a deep well of pure mountain water that will last at least 100 years to 200 years, even in drought conditions. Priceless, but developers just want land cheap. It'll probably get sold cheap, and some developer will make a fortune.

So, yeah, sadness all around: Jim, the wine, the fruit trees, the vision of growing fruit organically, of making pure wine without additives - all gone. It was quite an experience. One of my best memories will always be the quality time I got to spend with my with step-daughter: the long drives to and from the winery, selling wine together, bottling, corking and labeling wine, cleaning tanks, picking fruit, and pressing cherries in an old cider press for the Wild Cherry wine.

Yeah, it a string of bad. But I'm devoting myself to acting now with regular classes, and background work, and whatever else I can get. Up on an old western set near Santa Fe this morning, background for a small local company. A cousin (ten years younger) came to town, so I asked if they needed any more background. When I told them my cousin had just riden in from California on his motorcycle, they said, "A motorcycle? Hell yeah, we can use a motorcycle to help establish the time period." So he's signed up. Should be here soon; stayed at a nearby motel, I didn't have much room, and he's done a lot of sleeping since he's been here. We will head up to Santa Fe together this morning: 8:30am call time for background. Tomorrow, I have a small part in a small movie (which is usually how it goes) here in town.

No flooding here, if that's what you mean. Nice day. First day of our State Fair. Went with a friend. Watched an alligator show, which was fascinating. Ate a deep-fried hamburger, some fried green-chile cheese kurds and some mutton stew. Visited some exhibits and vendors, but mostly looked at art. Went to the Fine Arts building, the Hispanic Arts bldg, and the Indian Arts bldg. There is a nice acrylic painting at Fine Arts I wanted right away, but it was already sold. Turns out there's a preview the night before when people can buy, so I lost out. I looked a similar one the same artist had, butย  it didn't impact me the same way. Saw several pieces I liked at Hispanic Arts. Voted for an $800 one I liked as best-of-show, but was not even slightly tempted by that price. Saw another one, mostly all in brilliant shades of blue, but passed on it too. Still hard for me to part with $300. I did end up buying a $30 print of another piece I had just seen at the Harvest Wine Festival here last weekend. The original had been on exhibit; it was his State Fair entry last year. I went to Indian Arts and spent an hour debating on a painting after I found it. It is by a Mescalaro Apache named Melvin c. Herrera. It had this fascinating shades of green, and dancers, and a clown. He says, a long time ago these Crown Dancers were not supposed to seen close up, or touched. I'll add a photo of it. I also found a photo of the print I bought online, so I'll see if I can attach that too, or in a second message.

Other than that, I still have a part in a movie that started shooting tonight. My part, however, won't be shot for another 2 or 3 weeks. The director contacted me recently and asked me to take on a different role. My previous one had been as a serious but dull doctor in a 1980s AIDS ward. Now I am to be the father of a young AIDS victim; it's a more challenging role, with lots of emotional conflict and soul searching that takes place over quite a few scenes. It will be a fantastic boost to my new career if I can pull it off. Seriously, I hope I can remember all my lines at my present level of decrepitude.
Here's a link to the YouTube video of the short I acted in recently, as part of the 48-Hour Film Project contest: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cpXTGโ€ฆ
It's about 8 minutes long. Category was slapstick.

Thanks so much for the interesting reply, complete with an 'illustration' -you've been pretty busy! The photo is good and I'm glad you included it. Will you be going to the Fair again? It's almost time for the county fair here. When I drove by it yesterday, there was some event going on and people were everywhere, walking from the parking lots. They were dressed for heat. It's been the hottest summer here that I remember. I fully realize global warming now. The weather is just strange.

You're an actor now! Thanks also for the link to the 48-Hour Film Project. I assume you played the director in it. It's great to see you act. I'm sure you'll do fine as the father of an AIDS victim. You have the sensitivity for it, and I wouldn't worry about remembering your lines. You're not that decrepit! You're starting a new career. Mine is just being retired. Maybe I'll get a camera someday and take pictures -but that's what my twin sister did, and I should think of something else. I continue to write stories here. Well, tell me more about the movie business, if you will. I like your stories.

Did I tell you I got fired from one of the movies I was to be part of? It was strange. I was hired three years ago for the horror one I've mentioned before, and some months back it was finally coming together. Funding, major studio, union movie, etc. Suddenly, I was told I had to re-audition as a non-union actor. I did so, and I thought it went well enough; I knew the part well, but the lines they chose for the audition were minor ones from one minor scene. I did make a mistake though: I had added the name of the movie and the name of the production company to my resume, for two reasons: one, because I needed more line items and I thought I had the part - I listed it as in pre-production - and two, because actors are always asked if they will have any conflicts, so I thought I'd put it on as something I had a committment to. When I found out I had to re-audition, I neglected to remove it from my resume. At the audition, I was taken aside before my audition and told I couldn't have it on my resume, and I needed to cross it off. I said sure, and crossed if off. I apologized for including it, as I'd only put it when I heard we were going to start shooting, and had forgotten about it. A few days later, I got a Facebook message that I was off the picture for violating the non-disclosure agreement I had signed almost three years ago. I didn't understand that, and said so, that I thought that was only a matter of not disclosing the plot or putting any photos or details on social media. So, I was off the project, along with one other who had also foolishly added the movie to her resume as being in pre-production. I've spoken to others who were involved and no one knows yet what is going on. One person I ran into recently didn't know I was off of it.
What I learned is that one does not usually put a project on one's resume until is it completed. Often, it's best to wait until it is posted on IMdB (the movie base) as being in post production. The rules seem to come from the actors' union, but I am not union as yet, nor do I have an agent, who would have caught that faux pas.ย  I have just had to accept that I lost that job, and move on. But, there seems to be enough to keep me busy.

I'm OK. Took a while to accept the vintner's death. He had scheduled the annual summer solstice BBQ, so we went ahead with that. A lot of people came, and of those closest to him, we were all doing a little better. Jim was a much loved man. At any rate, the winery was open for business, and sold wine. I drove my step-daughter out to sell wine that day, and she was OK. I wasn't needed for selling, so, for once, I became a customer, drinking wine and eatibng BBQ, and hanging out with winery partners I've known these past years. Talked about Jim some of course, and the winery, and other things. The mood was a bit lighter. Gerard, someone who has been part of the winery off and on for a long time, decided to manage the place for now. He's an accountant, so that's handy, but he still has a regular job, so he can't be there like Jim was, who lived there. However, he had bought a piece of land next door, and had cleared it for building something. I don't know if his plans were to move there permanently, or if his plans will change now.

So far, I haven't heard from him about owrking at the winery, picking fruit, making wine, etc. I don't know when we will have a board meeting. As a partnership, they need to make the decision to keep the winery open, or sell it, if possible. Gerard is going through all the winery's financial obligations, and trying to come up with an overall picture. So, it's all up in the air for now. Read Metamorphosis of a vision on the website for a good idea of what the winery was all about. It was more than making and selling wine.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

tmulcahy In reply to xlntwtch [2017-07-06 05:42:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm mixed. It's a great place: a community center, a fruit farm with a well deep into the mountain itself, I get to drive my step-daughter out there and work with her sometimes, I feel tied to the place, it's possible to recover some of the money I received in shares instead of wages at some point. There's the deal with a renowned native flutist to make wine for him to label and sell in his high-end restaurant. There's the orchard/farm itself saved from developers, but a huge debt for the winery. If I continue working, I'd like to be paid in money I can bank, not shares. On the other hand, if a decision is made to sell the winery, that's the only way to recoup something from seven years of labor paid mosly in shares. But, the winery doesn't make tons of money, so would anyone want to buy it? Jim's nephew has said that Jim was the driving force, so can the winery survive without him? There's no one like Jim. There is also no winery like this one anywhere. A wide range of dry fruit wines for food pairing. A cooperative venture. Hard work. Long drive. A brewery next door that would have the winery sell its beer. Possibilities.

Then I worked with him making wine, fixing the place up, selling wine, etc. for the last seven years. He'd become such a part of my life, the loss is palpable.

Hmm. I liked it better the way it was. Did you mean to repeat "Rick didn't know if he would buy it," for example? It seems like an error, and I couldn't get past it. Taking out the spaces between paragraphs also makes it look like a 'wall of text' on a computer. I'm sorry you changedย it, but you're the writer. The only reason I write this now is because my username is on, too, and that concerns me.

ย ย ย  Hmm. I took out the redundant phrase, but didn't see any other problems. I don't recall that there were spaces between paragraphs before. I don't do that unless the place where I'm posting doesn't take indentations. These are all indented paragraphs, whicht is generally what's required in writing.
ย ย ย  Perhaps the Stash editer removes such spaces? because I didn't remove any space between paragraphs recently, just took out the extra space between words. It doesn't look like a wall of text to me, as I see the spaces at the end of each paragraph that breaks up the text, as in this message.
