You're very welcome! I just recently started working with charcoal - its nice to do some mark making after staring at design homework

I like a lot of the charcoal, the wide range of shades of gray .. I still try to improve ...

have you tried playing with pastels? They apply pretty similarly

ChechuMJ In reply to wordzz [2012-02-09 20:39:17 +0000 UTC]

I have not ever tasted. I do not like is the technique of application. Recently I've noticed a real improvement in charcoal and am open to criticism and ideas hehehehe.

Well your work looks pretty good so far. I run into the same issue as you did with the Joaquin piece - making proportions of the face too long. I really like the smoke in the Robert Downey Jr. piece...and his facial hair. That's hard to draw!

umm, a bit of both actually. there are several pieces that I incorporate stock images, and several that I've created from scratch. I'm glad you enjoy!

Hey man, thanks for the fave on my poem! You have a fascinating gallery: still looking...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wordzz In reply to reddragoneagle [2007-12-20 13:00:00 +0000 UTC]

thank you. I need to add some more of my poetry here. I began doing graphics to accent my poetry (ie Blake), though lately it seems the other way around. You have a great voice. I enjoyed reading your words.

reddragoneagle In reply to wordzz [2007-12-20 13:47:16 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

I have considered graphics too, and I've made a start by including a thumbnail, but it's not really my thing. I might have another go at some point. I did have an idea that I would make videos and read my poems aloud to go with them - but I don't have much time for that kind of thing, unforunately. Too busy making music, which is my main love.

what do you play?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

reddragoneagle In reply to wordzz [2007-12-22 02:57:06 +0000 UTC]

I play keyboards, and I've played in bands since about 1988. Before that I played double bass in an orchestra. I'm now studying to become a film composer, while working in I.T. to pay the bills! I like to keep busy... you play?

wordzz In reply to reddragoneagle [2007-12-22 03:46:31 +0000 UTC]

I'm a vocalist, play some pretty mean percussion, and a passing rythme guitar. The words are really the passion, wether they're expressed lyrically or through graphics. It's a goal to put together enough for a compilation, but I'm always my worst critic, lol. It would take an objective opinion to really sort through them. There are some days I read through my old sketchbooks of poetry and am amazed that I wrote them...some days they're just stanzas full of gibberish.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

reddragoneagle In reply to wordzz [2007-12-22 11:00:15 +0000 UTC]

I know exactly what you mean. I have hundreds of poems, and the ones on my gallery have passed fairly exacting self-critical tests, but I still sometimes read them and think "why did I think that was good?" I think it depends on the perspective. When you write something, the act of writing is performed in a wider context of emotion. If that emotion, for whatever reason, is no longer available to you later on, then the words can seem hollow. However, that doesn't mean they are worthless: someone else reading them may hear their own particular resonances.

You are right to say that objective opinions are useful. I've thought about putting a collection together too, and it's very hard to know what's technically good and what isn't - especially with poetry, as a lot of it is very subjective. The other problem is that once you start going through and evaluating the works, you end up tweaking them! As the saying goes, "a poem is never finished, only abandoned".

Good vocalists are hard to find - and you're a multi-instrumentalist too - respect for that! I'm planning to take guitar lessons too. I think I have keyboards licked now (after over 30 years!), but I want to be more versatile and play other things.
