But thanks

Oh and if you're talking about the people in Art 1 that didn't like it, well, they didn't like a lot of the really good stuff I mean they only like the stuff that's big and is painted in pretty colors so. Dw about what they say Trust me it's awesome

Hi,

Thank you for the Watch. It is appreciated. I am afraid you will not see much new happening. I would love to post more, but my usable time has been going to commenting on art. IfI should start feeling better, i may post more work.

I will try to critique your work as I get the time.

I use certain terms when I critiques. Just in case you are not familiar with them, here are some definitions:

TERMS (just in case you are not familiar):

TONE is the measure of darkness/lightness of a shade. In an 8 bit depth grayscale image, there are 256 shades of gray. If your photo or drawing had perfect tonal quality, we would find 256 different shades of gray in it.

HUE In a color image, Hue is the color value of a shade. In each color channel of CMY (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow), there will be 256 shades of hues. In addition, the K channel (Black) there will be 256 Tones. If you combine every possible one of these hues, with every possible tone, and in every possible combination, you get 4.3 billions of possible shades of color in the CMYK color Gamut (C 256 x M 256 x Y 256 x K 256). RGB has only three channels and will yield 16 million colors (R 256 x G 256 x B 256).

TONAL QUALITY is expressed by the number of different tones used across the entire tonal range (black to white), and by the smoothness of the tonal gradients. For example, comparing an image that has 256 shades of gray, compare to an image that has 100 shades of gray, the one with 256 shades will have a higher tonal quality.

TONAL RANGE The Full Tonal range possible is 0 to 256. The Tonal Range for your image is where your image's pixels start and stop on the full tonal range. For example, if the deepest shadow pixel in your image is 28 (meaning you have no pixels from 0 to 27 tones), and your highest highlight pixel is 220 (meaning that you have no pixels from 221 to 256 tones), then your tonal range is 192, representing 75% of the full tonal range. This is easily seen if you look at an image's histogram in Photoshop. Your Tonal Range is from where the black graph starts, to where it ends. If the black part of the graph extends from 0 to 255, then you are using the full tonal range.

HISTOGRAM Histograms are used in Digital Cameras and in Photoshop. You can see an example of of by opening an image in Photoshop, then go to Image > Adjustments > Levels... The black bart of the graph you see represents all of the pixels in your image. The horizontal scale under the graph is showing you how your image's pixels are distributed across the Tonal Range.

DYNAMIC RANGE for an image is basically the ratio of the darkest point of shadow to the brightest point of highlight in a photo. Full Dynamic Range is from pure white to pure black. Adjust Dynamic Range and Color Balance with Levels or Curves in Photoshop. Devices have Dynamic Range to, such as Cameras, Displays, and Scanners.

BLOWOUT & BURNOUT:

Blowout happens when too much light hits the digital sensor, or the film emulsion, causing all of the pixels to go white. This can be from ISO setting, Flash, shooting into the sun, etc. If you take a picture of someone in a white shirt, there should still be a fair amount of pixel detail present in the white shirt.

Burnout is the opposite, it is when there was so little light that the area of the photo is completely black, with no other pixel detail.

Typically, we sacrifice elements in a photo when we press the shutter. For example, there is a powerful cloudscape and some cliffs. If we expose for the clouds, the cliffs become dark and may even loose detail to burnout. If we set the camera's exposure to capture detail in the cliffs, the brighter sky is blown out and detail is lost.

The downside of blowout and burnout is that you loose details in the shadows and highlights. Since there is no pixel information in these area, it cannot be fixed either in the darkroom, or digitally, except by creating pixels that were never there.

The other problem with excessive blowout and burnout is that it narrows the available tonal range, so that all of the remaining pixels representing the rest of the image, have to be expressed in a narrower tonal range, thereby decreasing tonal quality, resulting is a poorer quality of image.

Matthew

You are very welcome. There is no rush at all in responding. I try to be helpful to young artists. I sure could have used some help, but nobody did. My father is trained as a figure artist. He is a very good artist, but he refused to show me how to do anything. He showed my brother and sister a lot. I think I was not the kind of boy he wanted. I was very sensitive, caring, but not feminine. However, I hated sports. The problem was that I was born Autistic. It takes long for me to learn, but once I learn it sticks.

He thought I was pretty stupid until I graduated number 1 from the Merchant Marine Academy with a degree in Engineering. Then he wanted to talk, and talk, and talk... He never bothered to find out that Autistics are not stupid. We mostly have trouble socially. I never felt like I fit-in. I felt like I was on the outside of the iron fence, looking in on the world and life, separate and alone, unable to be a part of any of it.

Well, failing forst grade did not help matters. My eyes were reading independently, not together (part of the Autism). I had to go to speech therapy to learn how to make my tongue curl to say the letter R. Once I did enough therapy to train my eyes, I learned so fast that I skipped 3rd grade.

Why I just said all of that I don't know, LOL.
