Description This is a factory-built replica (and it was made in 1980) of a 1935 Auburn Boat-tail Speedster. The Auburn company specialized in swoopy autos for folks who insisted on something different. They lasted until they were forced to close by the raw material shortages of WWII. There's an ornamental plaque on both sides just above the exhaust pipes that reads "supercharged". I wonder if the replica is as well.

If some of you think you've seen this thing someplace before (and you're old enough) this was the type of car used in the Remington Steele TV show.

So do I, but with a trace of sadness. It doesn't show in this pic, but a lot of the clouds that day were showing traces of what I call winter plumage for them. I've noticed that quite often in the darker times of the year, clouds will have kind of a darker underbelly. It's not the darkness that's indicative to me, but there's a hint of leaden color there that is prevalent in wintertime, though we're nowhere near that yet. It just reminded me.

Not that I spend much time on my back studying passing clouds...

Probably a bit if both, though I have observed the phenomenon. My kids understand it when I tell them, but I've found older adults who don't see it. In the Fall when skies are completely leaden, it's very noticeable to me in individual clouds.

Amazing car! Didn't these also have a plaque that indicated how fast they had been tested? Would be a nice touch for a replica, although it's freely admitting they broke the law haha

I don't know. This car is always displayed with a sheet of paper on the windshield stating that it's a "factory-built" replica, but I've never seen the owner to ask about it.

I'd say it was pricey. If I ever meet the owner. I'll try to get some info on who built the replica and if they're still around. I doubt there's anything under the hood other than a 1980 Detroit engine of some sort, but even at whatever this cost, it has to be cheaper than a well-maintained original if such a thing is still available.

definately. yeah thats likely, i dont think there would be many originals around considering not too many were made.

Ah. When I saw the hood ornament I thought it was a Hispano-Suiza

The bodywork designer was quite famous [link] and worked for Stutz and Deusenberg before joining Auburn.
