Description
The Sherman was first equipped with the L/40 75mm M3 Gun, which firing the usual M61 round could penetrate 77 mm at 100m and 61 mm at 1000m. Conditions later in the war necessitated the up-gunning to the L/55 76mm, which could penetrate 124 mm at 100m and 83 mm at 1000m using the usual M79 round.1:35 Academy Scale Models

From what I've read, the crews liked the Easy 8 upgrade. Made the tank ride better and the gun did more damage.

The Jumbo version had even as thick armor as the Tigers

The M1A1 76mm gun also had M93 HVAP ( High Velocity Armor-Piercing ) rounds, that could pierce thicker armor than staple M62 APC round or M79 AP. According to Steven J. Zaloga, the M93 round could penetrate 157mm homogenous armor plate at 30 degree at 500 yards range.

The problem for the Shermans was always range, the German 75mm's and 88mm's always had the advantage with range. The "EasyEight" could take that advantage away by moving faster than the German turrets could be moved to track them.

That was because the M4 was designed to resist 37mm rounds from PaK 36 or 50mm for PaK 38. Those, who designed Shermans, did not predict their tank would have to face anti-tank guns such as 75mm PaK 40/KwK 40 ( Panzer IVF2-J ) / KwK 42 ( in Panther and Jagdpanzer IV/70 ) and the fearsome 88mm guns (nicknamed by the Germans "acht-koma-acht" ), from AA Flak 36 up to PaK 43/2 ( in Tiger II and Jagdpanther ).
The abbreviations mean:
PaK = ( die ) PanzerabwehrKanone = anti-tank gun
KwK = ( die ) KampfWagenKanone = gun mounted in fighting vehicles ( tanks, tank destroyers, self-propelled guns and so on )
FlaK = ( die ) FliegerAbwehrKanone = anti-aircraft gun
Vulnerability to German guns was not only trouble for allied tanks - the Soviets also lost many of their KV, T-34 and JS tanks when facing the German weaponry, just they avoid talking about those facts.

I have noticed I have way to much dirt on the tracks of the "EasyEight". I'm going to have to dry brush in some steel plate color. I find you see lots of little things when you take photos up close like this.
