Description My first Rurouni Kenshin fanart! I've loved this anime since I was a kid. Kenshin also happened to be my first crush. (lol)

I never dared do a fanart for this particular anime before, since it's so precious to me and I didn't want to butcher it. Hopefully, I did them justice.  This took a really long time to finish, about 16 hours total spread between 3-4 days. Partly because I couldn't get the shading on their skin right the first few times and because I'm such a damn perfectionist. I really need to learn how to sketch faster

Featuring Himura Kenshin and Kamiya Kaoru from Nobuhiro Watsuki's manga Rurouni Kenshin.

Done with Photoshop CS3 and Wacom Intuos Tablet

Constructive comments most welcome ~

EDIT: After Obelis pointed it out, I knew I had to redo this piece and add in Kenshin's scar and undershirt! What a fail. Also corrected some weird filter effects, so now the trees are the same color.

Oh, I know that feeling when you are afraid to draw something because you're afraid to ruin that topic for yourself!.. However, you definitely didn't ruin Rurouni Kenshin for yourself by this. This anime was also my childhood favorite so I have lots of warm feelings to it!

This artwork impressed me! I like the calm atmosphere, created by peaceful look in the characters' eyes. Also, the pose! The way Kenshin and Kaoru are holding hands shows the strong bond between them. I especially like how you drew Kenshin's hand - I can see all those hand bones through his skin, which creates an impression that the author knows anatomy really well! Also - the pattern of Kaoru's kimono - it's a perfect combination between decorativeness and realism.

What could be improved here is Kenshin's clothes. You see, under his pink part of clothes he should be wearing a white shirt like he always does.

  (www.capsulecomputers.com.au/wp…               vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/k… )

Also, Kenshin's scar. A part of it should be seen on his left cheek...

However, these are just little details to fix. Generally, you did great. Keep up the good work!

Hello, Obelis! Thanks so much for your comment and for the fave!

Kaoru's kimono was actually based on her yellow kimono in the anime. I originally wanted something more traditional-Japanese looking, but at the same time her yellow kimono was so iconic, I decided to go with it instead.

And holy crap!!! I can't believe I forgot his white undershirt AND his scar!  (What a fan I am) there, I guess I've butchered it lol. Now that you pointed it out, I can't possibly leave it like that, it's too embarrassing. Gonna go edit the psd file now and reupload the new image.

Again, thank you! You're a lifesaver lol

You're welcome! You probably hadn't watched RurouKen for a while and that's the reason why you forgot them. Human's memory can be such a tricky place...

You're right, I haven't. I did download reference images though. Heck, I even had one in the psd file side-by-side with my drawing where I plucked the colors from (granted, it was a tiny image). I guess I just brain farted

Hello, This is from ProjectComment!

This is a very good piece! I haven't watched this anime series, but I like the effects you did for the two of the characters shown.  The colors are so vibrant tertiary colors of red and blue-violet, plus warm colors of red, yellow with tints of pink in it.  I like how you did with the effects on the sky as well as the tree barely shown on the left.  It's as if it were real.

One minor detail that's bothering me is the sky shown on the top-right behind the purple-haired girl.  If you could match that sky well with that next to Rurouni Kenshin, or vise versa, that would be perfect!

Overall, this is great and keep it up! You're getting there!

Hi, thanks so much for your comment!

About that sky on the upper right, it's actually a tree the thing is, I put a gradient over the whole image where I made the left half red and the right half blue. I liked how it looked then, but in hindsight it might not have been the best idea.

But thanks for pointing it out, I appreciate the time you took for this

That's okay whatever works to create the illusion is fine all the more! What caught my attention even for a split second is looking at Kenshin embraced by Himura. And the background just fits perfectly as they are looking at each other.

Overall, a job well done!

Kenshin Himura is actually the name of the guy, and the girl's name is Kaoru Kamiya but that's understandable since you haven't seen the anime yet. I guess I should put their names in the description.

Again, thanks for your kind words!

Oh sorry, I never watched the series and watched snippets of Samurai X, I didn't know much of the characters names...I always thought Himura was the name because of the hashtag label shown below...

My apologizes..

Hey It's very good semi or realistic (sry i'm new artist). Blooming effect of his and her hair is very good. I feel very good at his neck from sternocleidomastoid and his clavicle is so good. You paint your hair with great skill and stunning visual.
For one thing I think her head is not the same way with neck and her entire body so I feel her head float around lol. Her kimono is not in detail like his cloth (I think you lose all power for him haha)
Background is good one and this is a great art. I'm still new so maybe it's my mistake so far. Have a nice day!

Hello and thanks a lot for your comment! You're quite perceptive and you raise very valid points

And by the way, I had to google sternocleidomastoid as I had no idea what it was.

It's true about her head. It looked fine while I was drawing the lineart, and then suddenly it got wonky once I'd colored it in. It happens sometimes hopefully with enough practice, I'll get better. And you're right, his kimono's more detailed

Thanks so much for your time!

Oh about sternocleidomastoid (I guess you copy and paste ), I just addict from medical school so pardon me
I have the same problem too when I color I usually use cheat free transform all around character (haha that's a shame for me )

Thank you so much. You are so professional.

Nonsense newbie or not, a valid opinion is a valid opinion and yes, I copy/pasted! I couldn't spell it if my life depended on it haha

Free transform is there for a reason, though. Plenty of digital artists use it, myself included.

I don't know what you're thanking me for, but thank you!

This looks too glossy and shiney, which looks particularily bad for the robes, becuase of the pressumed material.  The hairline on the second girl's forehead, should get done differently, make it so its not such a smooth line.  Or, was that a boy?  Dang it, its like tatlntael said, they both look like girls.  The color of the eyes seems much too light, it looks like they're possessed, but then Im not at all familiar with these characters, so maybe thats what they're supposed to look like?  It seems like their eye pupils should be a little more visible.  The eye lashes on the second girl (girl?) seem a little short to me, but maybe its supposed to be like that.

The hair looks good, and this is the one part that looks like it has appropriate lighting on it.  the lighting should not be as drastic on the clothing, and maybe not quite as drastic on the flesh, though it does help with the noses and other features which look finely sculpted.

Lastly, the background looks way blurry and out of focus.  I know backgrounds should often be like that, but it feels like you over did it.  Maybe you could've shown a little more of the background too?  It looks like a water fall and trees, but Im not wholly sure.

Hello! Thank you for the comprehensive comment.

The black-haired girl's kimono is actually made of silk, which is what a lot (if not all) of traditional Japanese kimonos are made of, so it's meant to be shiny. Granted, I still need a lot of practice with coloring different textures realistically. You're right about her hairline though, must have missed that little detail.

I think what you mean to say is that the whole piece looks over-exposed in terms of lighting.

And the background is just trees against a cloudy sky, no waterfall there.

Well, this comment might come off sounding weird but I feel Kenshin turned out looking a bit too feminine. Honestly, when I see him here, he could easily pass for another woman to me. I feel the hands need some work; They just seem a bit...crooked.

13-year-old In reply to tatlntael [2016-01-20 04:03:59 +0000 UTC]

Kenshin actually is really difficult to capture, because in the anime he does look quite feminine and could pass off as one of the girls so translating a 2D anime face into a 3D semi-realistic face and being able to keep that ambiguity was definitely a challenge. And you're right about the hands, I still need a lot of practice. However, I do appreciate your thoughts! Thank you
